I have been removing some of the Alt-Names that came with a Gedcom. I removed about 30 at the most. Many of them were nicknames. I like the way RM handles those. After removing the Alt-Names I thought I should go through the Database tools. Everything was fine until I got to Compacting. There was an error message something about a report open, but I don't have any reports open. I closed everything down until the backup then used the database tools. It says it can take a long time for a large database. This has 3,3??. I don't think that is large enough to take that long at compacting. Will it be OK to just down the compacting or should I let it run overnight? Nancy

In the Master list of sources where is the favorites button? Or the Recent button? Per "Getting the Most Out of RootsMagic 7" pg. 96 Nancy
Someone said the source templates were duplicated because they were not actually identical. You have to manually go to the Place List and merge those. Select any source that is most correct, then select any others you want to be exactly the same, and merge. If you have some that have a a cemetery in the place field , merge them all together separately from the Place that doesn't have a detail. Then if you want to move the cemetery to the Place Details do it now. Then you can merge all the like place name. Each individual record keeps its original place detail if it h as one. I suggest looking at the Cascading charts settings on the Pedigree Chart window. Is the "Print cascading charts" check box marked? What is the value in the "Number of generations to print" field? If your sources are not EXACTLY the same they will duplicate. All of the punctuation and spacing must agree, otherwise they re-add. You may be able to clean up the spacing and punctuation and merge them together so they are still attached to your people. If they are not exactly the same they will not merge. Been there, done that! Carol, Was leery of deleting duplicate source tempates as a cautionary note indicates that "There are sources using this source. If you delete this source type, RootsMagic will remove all sources of this type from your database." Not sure of the outcome of that, and with no way of generating a report of source citations linked to each source template, was scared off. --Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Anne via To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, April 22, 2016 6:29 PM Subject: Re: [RMagic] Fw: RM Database Tools & Duplicate Source Templates Hi, I have this problem too! Custom Source Templates and, I believe, custom Fact Types are treated as new when transferred, even if there is a duplicate in the target database. I agree that this should be handled better. Hi, I have this problem too! I have SOURCE TEMPLATES duplicated many times. I think, but I'm not sure, this happened after dragging and dropping people from one database to another. I am not at all computer savvy either! I think that RM should address this problem and fix it. If it is a consequence of dragging and dropping, they certainly shouldn't be recommending the procedure in their videos! Instead, they should be warning people never to do it. I certainly don't know what to do about the duplicates. Someone recommended that I go through the source list and eliminate any duplicates. I tried that. There weren't many and deleting them in no way affected the duplicate source templates. One of them is duplicated 8 times. Sandra, if you want, I will have a look at your database. Send me a backup (.rmgb file). Had no response to my earlier plea below. So, in an attempt to resolve the issue of duplicate source templates, I made a copy of the 945-name database currently in RM4, then imported the copy into RM6 and ran all Database Tools options on the imported database hoping for a miracle. Nada! Nothing! Still stuck with 10 identical new source templates when I should have only one -- which needs a bit of project-specific tweaking. Bruce, Tom, somebody - HELP! --A longtime user, and advocate, of FO/RM for the Studebaker Family National Association's ongoing digitization project. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandra Studebaker To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, April 19, 2016 12:09 AM Subject: RM Database Tools & Duplicate Source Templates A belated thank you to Paul, Pat, Margaret and Rick for responding to my earlier (4/4) query about RM's database tools. Long a user--and lover--of RM3 and earlier versions since FO7, I didn't realize that later versions of RM have useful database tools that RM4 lacks. But, apparently, even RM7 still does not have one to help with the issue of duplicate source templates of my one new user-created project-specific template. Twenty-one copies of that template seemed to appear suddenly in one RM4 database of 945 names entered individually. None had been entered via drag-and-drop from another database. Managed to carefully identify and eliminate all but ten of the culprets without losing anything, but the remainder have me stymied. See that Tom Holden has an SQLITE solution for duplicate source templates, but this soon-to-be-octagenarian doesn't have a clue, nor the courage, to try to apply it. Don't want to risk deleting any, as all are said to "have sources using this source," and I see no way of determining what they are. But maybe someone on the list can hold my hand in merging these apparently identical duplicate templates. TIA --Sandra Studebaker in Michigan
Is it possible to get a report of the marriages for a group I have set up? I am doing a study of a neighborhood. I looked at the marriage report. With a database of 3348 people and 1271 families my report was 85 pages long. Several names in the grooms column appeared maybe 20 times or more with a different spouse each time. I have only found one person who was married 5 times and I don't have all the earlier 4 in the database. Something is very wrong with the database, the report or my entries. Any ideas that I could check easily? This database was imported from a FTM2014 Gedcom. Nancy
And customize the sentence templates after the sex change so that the pronoun is appropriate. Of course, that assumes you set sex to what it deemed to be at Birth. If instead you set it to what it became, you might choose to customize all those before, instead.
