I usually start from pedigree view. Just click on the name of the person you want to add information to. If it is birth you are trying to change, click on that line; then at the top right of the "edit person dialog" box click on the area with the date, change the date and click save or close at the bottom of the dialog box. Once you get used to RM, you will find it so much easier than FTM. But change is never easy when we get really involved with an older program. I suggest you install v. 7 for the newer features, but the two versions basically operate the same way. I mostly add new family births, with no problem. Now I am trying to update some info just given to me about a cousin's family. I had the death date of someone, but only the month and year, now I have obtained the date (day). I tried adding it and clicked Save, but it still doesn't appear; and I can't find any help in Help. I have other new info about that same family but got discouraged with the first attempt (above). I'm used to years of easily adding info to the OLD Family Tree Maker (not the newer versions), but I'm not having any success with Roots Magic. I am using RM V.6; I have V.7 but haven't installed it yet. Thanks for any help. Previously when I added a person, or edited a person, the working screen size for that activity was about one-fourth the size of the full screen and was more or less centered. Sometime while doing my entries, I 'hit' some key and now the working screens are all full size, and I don't like that. Is there any way to change it back to what it was before. Yvonne in St. Louis
I have not followed this closely, so I may be repeating. Is this template in the source list? If it is -- Lists - Source list -- highlight the name of the source and click on Print at the top. A box will come up and you can choose Print a single source and check what you want it to print. Click on generate report and you should see where the source is being used. In your working screen, use the min/max button (the box next to the red x in the upper right corner). If that does not do it, find the edges with your cursor and when you have the double headed arrow, pull it to the size want it. You will probably need to do that at the corners - or at each edge of that screen. If this is not in the middle where you like it, hold down your cursor on the top blue edge and move it where you want it to be. Hope this makes sense. Apparently both templates are being used. There is no way to find out where each is being used, is there? I think I can live with 2 source templates, each being duplicated only once, though I think it would be nice to be able to merge them. It's better than having some duplicated 10 times. I won't drag and drop again. Thanks for all the help! Not being able to delete a template that is unused sounds illogical but maybe it is possible if it is used by a 'phantom' source, i.e., one that supports a now non-existing person, family or event. Such a source would not be output in any report on a person but a simple test for sources that use a template would not also check to confirm that the source itself is used. I was able to delete all but two of the duplicates. So, they were duplicated, but not in use anywhere. Odd. They were all from The Master Genealogist. I don't know if that is pertinent to the problem, or if it's just a fact that most of my source templates naturally are from TMG. Golly. I guess the important thing is to remember that you are doing the genealogy to trace family origin, like women are recorded always with their maiden names. (I've occasionally seen rants from women who can't accept the use of their maiden name in genealogy, but I think it's confusion about the purpose of genealogy.) In order to keep the family line clear, I'd identify the person by their birth gender--and enter notes to explain the rest. And use the notes for pronoun/gender references on all entries after the sex change. How would you handle someone who had a sex Chang??
Put one in and the other in notes. Mark it private. It is personal. I had to leave, so I did not try anything else. But for the two templates where I clicked delete, I was given no options at all. The templates disappeared immediately. I'll see what happens tomorrow when I can try it on some others. In RM7, you only get a warning after you click on the first message "Delete this source type" and only if there are sources using it. If no source is using it, it is immediately deleted. So if you identified 10 that gave NO warning, you must have deleted them or you did not even try to delete them. Having merged duplicate sources, some of those may have used some of the duplicate source templates that then became unused and therefore could be deleted but they would not disappear on their own except by transferring (drag'n'drop) to a new database (unused custom source templates are left behind). Compacting for an extended period of time seems a little strange. I have a 239,000 person database, and I compact quite frequently. I have never timed the process, but I do not think it ever took longer than one or two minutes (probably less), about the same for indexing. I have used all versions of RM except version 4. As I recall, I never used RM4, because -- if I am remembering correctly-- back that far, it ran much slower than version 3 did. Version 5 was great. I am wondering about the gedcom -- Did it come from a different program that used unusual features not in RootsMagic? Hopefully someone will provide an explanation. -----Original Message----- From: nancy wright via Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2016 7:24 PM To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [RMagic] Compacting for over an hour I have been removing some of the Alt-Names that came with a Gedcom. Maybe an abberation, but I recently experienced a seeming contradiction to Tom's sage advice. Clicking the Delete option on each of 21 duplicate source templates, I identified 10 that gave NO warning that a source was attached. But fearful of doing so, I did NOT delete anything. Rather, from an alphabetically arranged Source List report containing pertinent Citations, I identified a number of duplicate Sources. When they were cleaned up the aforementioned 10 duplicate Source Templates disappeared. The remaining 11 duplicate Source Templates, WITH mystery sources, were resolved by our hero and his SQLite script. --Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Holden via To: Carol Anne ; rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2016 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [RMagic] Duplicate Source Template Problem If the template is used by any source, you will get a warning when you try to delete it so go ahead without fear. Hi Margaret, Yes, the Gedcom came from FTM2014. I could not import it into my TMG program, but I had already purchased RootsMagic in case TMG gave me too much trouble. That is the only database I have in RM, other than the Sample. I find each of those Alt-Names imported as a separate person. I am trying to clean up the database for my purposes. The owner who sent me the Gedcom is doing a rather large genealogy job. She asked me to get the marriage and death records. The death records we will need are restricted after 1965. I am mainly interested in the information for marriage records and death records. I just closed down RM. There was no way to stop the compacting. I made a backup. I hope it opens with no problems tomorrow. This happens rather frequently when I run all the database tools in order. When I close RM and then reopen I immediately run the compact database and it works fine. If the template is used by any source, you will get a warning when you try to delete it so go ahead without fear. Just respond correctly when you get the warning!
