In RootsMagic Explorer name list, are they prepended with the + icon? If so, then they are Alternate Names for the person displayed in the Individual Information pane when the name is selected. Do you have Tools>File Options>General>Number to display after name>Record number (RIN) set? When you select one of these names, what number do you see after the name in the Individual Information pane? If the number is not zero, use Alt-R to jump to the primary name for that person. The Indiv Info display probably won't change. One final thought and maybe the most logical explanation is the option in the Sidebar Index to Show alternate names. Is that checked? They are always shown in Explorer but are optionally displayed in Index. They can only be deleted from the person edit screen. As you click on them it opens the person edit screen. Like a Fact it is there until you change it. They are called alternate name in RootsMagic. FTM transfers many of them that RM then puts there for you. One at a time is the only way unless they happen to be the same name. I would double check before leaving the person screen. The person must be deleted from the edit tab on the main screen. You are on the right track. This should work: 1. Clear colour coding for the colour you are going to use in the next step, say, red. 2. Set your group of Mother's ancestors to red. 3. Create a named group using these criteria: 1. Mark Group>Select people by data fields>Birth/Place contains... OR Married/Place contains... OR Death/Place contains... 2. Unmark Group>Clear people by data fields>Color coding is NOT Red 3. Sorry, I sent this earlier with no subject line. I imported a Gedcom from FTM2014. I had many (over 100) items that were imported as Alt Names. I have made several of them nicknames, some alt spelling both First names and Surnames. Now I am left with 30 that are not connected to any name, person, date or anything. I can only get to them in RootsMagic Explorer. They should be deleted but how? If I double click on one of them to open up the person screen, it opens with no name, no dates, no nothing. Is there anything I can do to eliminate them or will I just have to ignore them? They are not in my list of people, only in the RootsMagic Explorer list. Nancy in Louisiana
Spellchecking can be turned off or you can add "Lucinda" to its custom dictionary. For details, search Help for terms like "spellcheck" or "spelling" or "dictionary". Good afternoon! My mother is from East Tennessee and there are a lot of women in my file named Lucinda. RM will accept that in the name field, but whenever I try to type it into a note or a citation, it is immediately changed to "Lucida". Backspace, try again, no go. I can cut & paste it in, or type something like Lucin and then go back and add the "da" without a following space, and it will remain Lucinda. This appears to be the only word that is changed in this way, but it is extremely annoying, to say the least. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thanx Nancy

RM has built in source Templates. You can copy and change the copy, but cannot be changed. You can copy them making any changes you want: however some user defined sources will not transfer. I think it is better explained in the Webinars. They are working on this problem. It sounds like you are merely confused by the similarities between the Edit Source window which you get at through Lists > Source List > Master Source List > Select/Edit versus the Edit Source window you get to through Edit Person > Select/Open Sources > Select/Edit source. When you edit from the Master Source List, you do not see the tabs and fields for the (many) citations of that source. Every now and then, when I bring up the Edit Source window (using website with multiple databases), some of the information is missing - in particular, the Source Details information is missing and a couple of the tabs across the top. Usually rebooting the computer fixes this, but it happens too often to have to keep rebooting. Any ideas what to do? Robert
