Instead of trying the various multi-step procedures (which I am not convinced are being done properly), why not just use the built-in End-of-Line report in RM7? Highlight the person you want the ancestors of and go to Reports>lists>individual-list and click on Create Report. Then where it says Selected People, choose end of line from the drop down list. Then click on Generate Report. I have 7.2.0.1 (5 May 2016). -- ====================================================== Charles R. I'll weigh in on this discussion with what I've experienced in trying to duplicate what others have posted.... >> Pat, here is a post that Renee listed from 2013 in the online forum: >> >> You can create a list or group of your end-of-line ancestors using >> RootsMagic. >> >> Reports > Lists > Individual List > No parents >> People to include: select from a list >> Highlight the starting person and check their box >> then click on Mark group, select "Ancestors of highlighted person" >> Direct ancestors - set the number of generations >> Click OK, OK, generate report This just doesn't work. As others have posted several times, this produces the "end of line" for everyone in the database. This "should" work, but it doesn't. >> You can also create a group of your end-of-line ancestors and filter >> your list on them. >> >> Create a Group - New >> Highlight starting person >> Click Mark Group >> Select all ancestors of a person - direct ancestors only >> Click Unmark Group >> Clear people by data fields >> Select "Number of sets of parents", "greater than" and enter 0 >> Click OK, OK, OK >> Enter name for the group >> This "kind of" works. You can certainly create a named group, I named mine "end of Line" but if I then try the report/list specifying to use this list, again RM produces the names of everyone in the database with an end of line. However, since the named group certainly looks like it's the right data. I then created a custom report with only one field, <name>, and in generating the report to use the named group "end of line", and got what I wanted, a list of names that are my ancestral end of lines. So in my view there is a rather obnoxious bug in the report/list feature of RM. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir

Sue, The first procedure does not work. The People to include dialog is ineffectual when any radiobutton other than Selected people is selected. When the No Parents choice is made, Selected people is disabled and the result is always everyone in the database with no parent. Charles, I may be doing something wrong but this report does not give the end-of-line parent as Pat is asking for. I could not choose my ancestors only; the report gave me all the ancestors in my database which include my husband's and children's spouses. I even tried creating a group but when I click on No Parents, the report ignores the group I have chosen. Perhaps I am creating this report incorrectly, but I could not find another way to do it. Today I reported the problem I'm seeing (described below) to RM support. They had me send a copy of my database, and a short time later sent me a workaround that I've since tested and found to work. So, I guess my database is "not" the problem. In case anyone else encounters the problem, here's the workaround that Terri sent: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wanted to get back to you and give you some instructions to have you try. Testing your file out and running the descendant list report it gave me a "Range Check Error" message. Usually when you get this type of error message its because your trying to generate a report that is HUGE!! I was able to get around this error and generate a report for 9 generations. Here are the instructions that I would like to have you try: 1. Open up the Descendant List report to the main settings screen. 2. Click on the Numbering Style button and select Outline from the options 3. Under the generations you will first need to select 7 generations 4. On the Spaces to Indent Each Generation I need for you to set that to 6 5. Uncheck the options bellow for: a. Print Color Coding b. Print Place Details c. Print Private Facts d. Print Preparer Information 6. Once you have done all of this you will need to generate the report The report will open up and you will have about 339 pages on this report. Here is what you will need to do to get 8 generations: 1. Once you have generated the 7 generations with 339 pages you will need to click on the settings button located in the upper left corner of the report viewer screen. This will take you back into the Descendant List report settings screen. 2. When you get into this screen you will need to increase the generations from 7 to 8 3. Then generate the report again. When you do this it will generate the report and it might take a while depending on your computer. Most likely towards the end it will try to bring up a RootsMagic Error screen. When you see this screen come up it might be blank and you might not see the report message this time. Leave this screen sitting there for a good minute. Then click on the red button with the white x mark on it located in the upper right corner of the screen. This will close that error screen out. Then the report will open up with the additional pages. With 8 generations I was able to generate 532 pages. That was a huge leap from the 7 generations with 339 pages. So you can see this is why you kept running into the error. Now, if you want to add a 9th generation to the report you will need to repeat those last steps all over again by clicking on the settings button in the top left corner of the screen and bumping the report up to 9 generations. Then generate the report again. If the RootsMagic Error screen opens up again wait a good minute and close out if it. Then this should bring up the 9 generations with 541 pages this time. Do not try and bump the report up to 9 generations all at one time. If you do it might give you that error again and you might have to start generating the report all over again from scratch. Just generate the report one generation at a time starting with generation 7 and bump it up one generation at a time from that point on. Let me know if you run into any issues. ------------------------------------------------------------------- As I mentioned, I ran the report and was successful in generating a 10 generation descendant list ( I only have 10 generations so far from my original Hoffpauir ancestor). The report is large, 2206 pages of descendants, but I asked for an index as well, which increased the total length of the report to 2486 pages. I was able to save the report as a PDF after following all the steps in the workaround. > > Anyone else having this kind of problem? You could go: Reports -> Lists -> Individual List -> Create Report Selected People = Select from List Mark Group -> Select People by Data Fields -> Burial / Place Details / Contains / "cemetery name" OK -> OK -> OK -> Generate Report Unfortunately this only gives you a list of names - no details about when they were buried. You could create a Custom Report, with the appropriate fields (and use the same selection criteria from above), to get the extra detail. I downloaded version 6 and tried the same report (Descendant List) with the same error as I got with version 7, so I am either mistaken that the problem was fixed with version 6, or the problem is in my database. RM tech support now has a copy of the database, so I'll soon know if the problem is with the data. Thanks to everyone who tried to help with the problem, support on this list is really great. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir

As an update, I've turned the "problem" over to RM support, including sending them a copy of my database so they can reproduce what I'm seeing. OK. This is exactly why I remain in the background. First, I was describing a scientific method for testing for a potential issue in RootsMagic. I went to a very large number and then a smaller number that would bound the potential problem to see if I could isolate the problem with a second database. And I found a similar (maybe not the same) issue and reported it. Yes, it could be that both databases have circular logic. However, scientifically, it tells me that there may also be an issue with RootsMagic. It is telling that there is a report of the issue in an early version that disappeared in a subsequent version and now has reappeared in the current version. (Not my testing but another's.) Going back to test one of the databases with the version that supposedly worked would be a validation process. For me, at this point, I don't care. Those who wish to debate genealogical research methods and motivations need to take that discussion elsewhere. This is a discussion about RootsMagic. BTW, I do not have 300 generations. I do not have 100 generations. However, my test did note a difference in the two list requests. The 300 request kept compiling for over a half hour. The 100 generation request generated an error in a much shorter time. Pat, there is no way that would be possible!!!!! 300 generations, at about 25 years per generation, would be about 7,500 years ago. Ken, have you discovered some kind of crystal ball that lets you look back that far? Why would anyone even try to do a 300, 100, 50, or 25 generation list? Utter nonsense! Yeah, I know, some "researchers" have traced their ancestors back to Adam and Eve. Don't know how many generations that would be. Start with your database; select People View; Look on right side for Burials. If not there, go to Burials. If not listed, go to Customize and add or subtract as it suits you. When you go back to list it will be there; now at the top click the column heading for an arrangement that suits you. You can take each place; click on it which brings you back to person edit view ; color code and return to people view for next one. When complete you can make a group of the color. Ken, regardless of the number of generations in your database, it should not matter how many you specify for the report, within reason. There is a limit of 32 for reports that use Ahnentafel numbering. The testing you have done is perfectly valid in trying to ascertain a breaking point. I daresay that there is a generational loop in both yours and Charlie's databases that comes into play at fewer than the number of generations at which you detect a slowdown. By that I mean you have an ancestor linked to himself also as a descendant. In RM, there is no tool to find such loops. There is in some other software. You might detect it by visual inspection of the report you succeeded in getting - there should be much repetition.
