I've never seen a bug in this area of RM. That doesn't mean there isn't one - just that I've never seen one. When you say you "created the EOL list", where did you create the list? What I mean is, did you create a group? Or did you create the "list" as a part of creating the report? The selection process is very similar in the two cases, but in one case the "list" is saved as a group and in the other case the "list" is not really saved. So exactly how did you create and print the "list" that was 2 pages long? Here's the distinction I'm talking about. You can say *Reports->Lists->Individual List->People to include->Select from List* or you can say *Reports->Lists->Individual List->People to include->(name of your group)*. If you do it the first way then you don't have to make a group at all. But it's usually easier to make the group so that you can look at the group and make sure you have the correct list of people. You can look at the group without printing a report at all simply by going to People View and selecting the group. And having made a group, you can run a report against the same group multiple times or run several different reports against the same group without having to go through the selection process all over again. So making a group is usually a good idea. So that's the question, did you do the "Select from List" thing when running the Individual Report, or did you first make a group and then specify the group when running the Individual Report? Jerry

Inspected the group and it "looked" like it was right. To print it, I had to create a custom report, selecting that group. Once I had a printed list, I could then verify that it was correct. Once that was done, I went to *Reports->Lists->Individual List->People to include->(name of your group)* (your second option). With this report, I got about 10 times the number of names that I got in the printed list from the custom report. This is essentially what I posted yesterday. I certainly agree that the first option or the second option should produce the same results (but I haven't tried your first option), but for me at least, I'm not getting my end of line "ancestors" with this procedure, I'm getting everyone's end of line ancestors. So I'm seeing precisely what several others who have tried this and seen. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir

I created the EOL list by the procedure of first selecting all ancestors, then deleting those with parents. That list is 2 pages long, and I've printed it out and looked at the data, and it is indeed those people at the End of Lines of my ancestors. However, if I then use that as the selection criteria that you describe above, I get a list 22 pages long, ie, the end of Line for everyone in my database. This is why I stated that there is a bug in the program. It "should" do exactly what you describe, but for me, it doesn't. Admittedly, for those people who might have a database that includes ONLY their ancestors, that procedure gives them what they want. This is why creating an ancestor group, then exporting that group to a new database, and doing the EOL procedure on that database, works. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir

    3. Right, some still don't get it. If I create a named group using the procedure repeatedly described to include only my ancestors that have no parents and I name it "My Ancestors sans Parents", I can have the Individual List print that group. How? By choosing the option "Selected people" and, from the "People to include" dropdown list, by selecting "My Ancestors sans Parents". I do not need or want the overriding option "No parents" because that disables my group filter. 3. I don't know when this term "end of line" or EOL for short came into being. I only started seeing this term recently. People are using it after the surname of the "end of line" ancestors in GEDCOMs they are uploading to Ancestry and linking to their DNA. As a result the surnames don't show in a surname search of your DNA matches. For example entering SMITH eol in the surname field will not find SMITH surname DNA matches in a search. 3. Hi, It was Pat McGrath who wanted to see which of her direct ancestors had no parents, and asked for suggestions. This can be done easily in RM7 with a wall chart. I set myself as the start person and then click Report/Charts/Wall Chart. Then under settings: set ancestors at 20 generations set orientation at left to right choose data to include and options choose a small font generate report This gives me a wall chart where all my ancestors without parents can be seen in a box at the right end of each ancestral line. I was able to save it as a .jpg file, which I could probably take to Office Max for printing. You could probably play with any of these settings like title, size of the boxes, etc. to make it pretty. But this presumes that your group contains just your end lines rather than containing all your ancestors. You get your group to contain just your end lines by marking your ancestors and then unmarking your "not end of lines". Your "not end lines" are people with parents. Such a procedure is not necessarily very intuitive. What does not work is creating a group of your ancestors and then trying to select just the end of lines when your run your report. You have to do all your selecting with marking and unmarking - while creating your group. Jerry

That's a very clever solution, and I applaud your creativity. I think the export/import technique as a way to get the report exemplifies the need for RM to provide an ancestors end of line report in a way that's more easy to use. In the meantime, I would suggest that marking your ancestors and then unmarking all the individuals in your database with parents would be much simpler and faster than creating a new database. It's just that marking some people and then immediately unmarking some of the people you just marked is not intuitively obvious. Jerry

    3. > It is not called "End of Line" as such. > Reports, Lists, Individuals, Create, No parents - People who have no parents entered. Correct. This report will include everybody in your database without parents. But to get end of line ancestral people, you need ancestors without parents rather than everybody in your database without parents. There is no way in the report options to combine the "No parents" option with the option to choose a group. > I tried Selected People, Select from List, chose myself in the list in the left pane, then Mark Group, > Ancestors of highlighted person, Direct ancestors only, OK, OK, People who have no parents entered, > but it generated (after a long delay) a list of all end of line people in my database. What you are doing here is to mark people directly from the report screen rather than making a group of people but the net result will be the same either way you select the people to include in the report. It's just that you if you make a group, you won't have to re-specify the list of people every time you run the report. Rather, you can re-specify the group every time you run the report which may be a little easier. But no matter whether you do the selection of people as a part of making the report or as part of making the group, the marking procedure above will mark all your ancestors and it will also mark everybody in your database who has no parents. That is way more people than you want in your report. So you need to mark all your ancestors and then unmark everybody who does have parents. The individuals who will be left marked will be your ancestors without parents who will be your ancestral end of line people. Jerry P.S. Making a group from which to make a report may or may not really be all that much easier than doing the selection as a part of making the report. That's because RM's groups are not dynamic. Which is to say, for example, that if you create a group of your ancestors and then add new ancestors, the new ancestors will not be in your group unless you add them to the group. But that's a different subject for a different day.

Perhaps someone created a group consisting of all their end of line people, and named the group "End of Line Report". After all, groups can be named anything you wish. 3. I hadn't been following this thread closely, but I decided to investigate. I was still on 7.2.0.0, and I couldn't find an end of line report as described. So up updated to 7.2.0.1, and I still can't find an end of line report as described. So this report is very mysterious. Where is it really? I don't think it exists. (By the way, the 7.2.0.1 update does not take place automatically as is usually the case. There is a little bug in the way it was placed on the RM Web site, and the only way to install it is to download it from the site. Normally, your RM welcome screen will give you the new update automatically, but not 7.2.0.1 due to the bug in the way it was placed on the site.) Since the "easy way" of using an end of line report doesn't exist - or since it doesn't exist for myself and at least for some other users - let's revisit the "hard way". So let's make a group. You need to make the group by marking your ancestors and then while you are still in the mark/unmark dialog by unmarking (clear data by data fields) Number of sets of parents -> not equal to -> 0. So you mark all your ancestors and then unmark the ones who are not your end of line ancestors. What will be left will be your end of line ancestors. Finish making your group, and you have your "end of line ancestors" group. Now go to the Individual List or a Custom list or any report that lets you select a group and select your newly made group. Done. The problem users are having with the group way of making the report is is as follows. First, they are making a group of all their ancestors, not just a group of their end of line ancestors. Second, they are printing the group with the Individual List and the Individual List does not include the option they need. The Individual list has four options: 1) selected people (which can be a group) 2) no parents, 3) multiple parents, and 4) unlinked. These four options and mutually exclusive. People seem to be selection option #1, selecting their group, and then selecting option #2 to get just their end of line ancestors. But as soon as you select option #2, you are no longer selecting option #1. Your group is still there in box where you chose it, but it is no longer selected because you are on option #2 now instead of option #1. It's a very confusing user dialog. So you have to choose your end of line ancestors when making the group, not when printing the report. By the time you get around to printing the report it's too late. Jerry

    3. I disagree that the issue here is a bug. At worst, the UI design is ambiguous because so many people mistakenly believe that the "People to include" function applies to any of the choices other than "Selected people". It probably should be disabled when anything below "Selected people" is chosen. If having a convenient list of the end-of-lines ancestors of a selected person is what is wanted, it does not exist in RM other than by creating the named group as previously described. To have it as an option in the Individual List report is a request for enhancement. 3. The only way you get "End of line" in the dropdown list for "People to include" is to have a so-named group. Select any person and you will get the same list, i.e., the members of the group. And you will get this list of members of your "End of line" group only if the "Selected people" radiobutton is also selected. Tom On Thu, May 19, 2016 at 9:17 PM, Charles R. I only have 'Everyone' and 'Select from List'. Am I missing something? Highlight the person you want the ancestors of and go to Reports>lists>individual-list and click on Create Report. Then where it says Selected People, choose end of line from the drop down list. Then click on Generate Report. I have 7.2.0.1 (5 May 2016).

Because there is NO "End of Line" report under Reports>lists>individual-list unless you have previously created a named Group called "End of Line", and then if you have, the report errs and produces the "end of Line" list for everyone instead of just the persons in the End of line group. I thought I had explained this all in my earlier post. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir
