    1. Re: [RMagic] HELP - need 'End of Line' report
    2. Bruce Fosnocht via
    3. Jerry, Thanks for your hard work assembling these instructions. I was able to follow them for my grandfather and they worked. But I was totally disappointed with the resulting report. It was a 9 page, alphabetical list of individuals that I don't know what I would do with. it shows their spouse, BMD, and children, but there is no indication of how they are related to my grandfather, so I don't know how I should prioritize my research, or who I should research first. Yesterday, and again today, I sent a 4-step instruction on how to make a wall chart of my grandfather's ancestors. It's much more informative. I can readily see their relationship with my grandfather. It tells me that I have 1 dead end in the 3rd generation, none in the 4th and 5th, and 8 in the 6th, etc. Now I can decide which of these dead ends I should research first. The other benefit of the wall chart is that I can send a jpeg of it to my cousins, or my nephew(who I'd like to get interested in continuing my research), and he can immediately see the path forward. The wall chart is far superior. I suggest our readers should try both methods, and decide which would be better for planning their own research. I'm pretty sure this is what Pat McGrath wanted. 3. Unfortunately, Jerry, your instruction to "do nothing" other than selecting the named group is not necessarily correct because RootsMagic remembers the last option that was selected. So it is essential to select the "Selected people" radiobutton if it is not already selected. This is the result of poor design of the user interface which has led to this 50 post discussion, much confusion and mistaken expectations. The "People to include" dropdown list should be disabled for all options but "Selected people". Tom

You will be in the mark/unmark dialog. The screen is called Select People. 4. Navigate to your grandfather. The easiest way is to type his name *Lastname, Firstname Middlename*. It really sort of sucks that it does no good to have started out with him highlighted before you get into the Select People dialog, but RM is not user very friendly about entering into the Select People screen. 5. *Mark group -> Ancestors of highlighted person* 6. Pick your generations of ancestors value, and keep the default of direct ancestors only. Click *Ok*. 7. *Unmark Group -> Clear data by data fields* (this is where the screen gets complicated) 8. *Select field -> Number of sets of parents -> not equal to -> 0*. The best way to get to the *Number of sets of parents* option is to type N and then scroll down to the correct option. Click *Ok*. You will get a message that says *Unmarked nnnnn people*, where nnnnn will probably be a pretty big number. It is unmarking everybody in your database who have parents, not just your ancestors who have parents. So it is unmarking a bunch of people who were already unmarked. That'a another confusing aspect of this part of the user interface, but it cannot be helped until and unless the RootsMagician decides to change it. I think the count should only show those people who were previously marked who became unmarked, but that's just me. 9. Click *Ok *again to terminate the People selection process. 10. Enter a name for the Group and click *Ok*. 11. Click *Close*. 12. Click *Ok *to exit QuickGroups. Here ends the creation of the group and the beginning of the creation of the report. The 12 steps above don't have to be run again unless you change the members of the group. The 4 steps below can then be run as many times as you wish against the group. 1. *Reports -> Lists -> Individual List -> Generate report*. This of course doesn't generate the report. Rather, it takes you to another screen with more options. 2. The *Selected People* radio button will already be highlighted. DO NOT CHANGE THIS. 3. Pat McGrath wrote, ".... could someone ... send out all the exact steps I need to find out what individuals are still missing parents in my grandfathers line (back 10 generations)?" This can be done easily in RM7 with a wall chart. 1) Go to your grandfather in the family view 2) Click Report/Charts/Wall Charts 3) In settings, change generations of ancestors from 10 to 20 4) Generate report That's all! In this chart, each of your grandfather's ancestors without parents can be seen in a box with no parents coming out the right end of the box. You could probably play with any of these settings like title, size of the boxes, etc. to make it pretty. You can save it as a .jpg file, which you could probably take to Office Max for printing. Let me know if this works for you. Bruce Fosnocht

I found the easiest way around the problem was to create a Named Group of my direct ancestors only, export a GEDCOM of that group only, create a new database, import the GEDCOM, and create the Individual Report, People who have no parents entered It only took a few minutes all up. 3. This is a simple question, but RootsMagic7 Charts are not wysiwyg. Every time I try to print a chart with four generations per page, if I print it portrait, it prints half of the page and the right side is cut off, while, if I print it landscape, it prints half the page and the left side is cut off. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks. 3. It is not called "End of Line" as such. Reports, Lists, Individuals, Create, No parents - People who have no parents entered. I tried Selected People, Select from List, chose myself in the list in the left pane, then Mark Group, Ancestors of highlighted person, Direct ancestors only, OK, OK, People who have no parents entered, but it generated (after a long delay) a list of all end of line people in my database. The problem is solved! This little bit of RM user interface is very confusing. If you first click the name of the group and then click on the No Parents button, the name of the group should disappear (or at least become grayed out) because the group is no longer selected. The way the user interface works now, it looks like you are applying the No Parents button to the selected group, but you are not. Having clicked on the No Parents button, the name of the group has now has become irrelevant but the user interface makes it look like the name of the group is still in full force. Jerry

This really sounds quite impossible (or else there is a nasty bug in RM that I can't recreate). Could I prevail on you to try a simple experiment? It shouldn't take but a couple of minutes of your time. Either recreate your group just like you did the first time around. Or better yet, maybe it still exists and you can just use it as it is without having to recreate it. Having recreated the group (or having found that it still exists), go into People View and select your group. If you are not familiar with People View, it's just one of the Views like Pedigree View, Family View, etc. and there will be a tab for it across the top of the View area. Once in People View, select your group. There is a big button at the top of People View that defaults to Show Everyone. Click on that button and there will be a drop down box listing all your groups. Select the group you made with your end of line ancestors. Your group will now be displayed in People View. This is a much easier and probably more accurate way to inspect a group than is creating a custom report. Just by scrolling up and down the members of the group in People View, it should be easy to see if your group contains just your end of line ancestors in your database (the short list) or all end of line people in your database (the long list). Let us know what you see. Thanks, Jerry P.S. (and not to be belabor the obvious), when you get the drop down list of groups in People View, be sure that there are not two different groups with very similar names, where one of the groups might be the long list by accident and the other group might be the short list.

You can certainly create a named group, I named mine "end of Line" but if I then try the report/list specifying to use this list, again RM produces the names of everyone in the database with an end of line. However, since the named group certainly looks like it's the right data. I then created a custom report with only one field, <name>, and in generating the report to use the named group "end of line", and got what I wanted, a list of names that are my ancestral end of lines. So in my view there is a rather obnoxious bug in the report/list feature of RM. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://sites.rootsmagic.com/CharlieHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Charlie, When you did the last report, ie. the Reports->Lists->Individual List->People to include->(name of your group)*, did you then click on any other button on the top of the individual list report settings screen? Those four radio buttons in the top part of the screen are mutually exclusive. If you click on the no parents button, you will deselect the named group selection (notice which buttons are still filled in) and you will get everyone in your database who has no parents. To get the report you want, select the named group and stop right there. Click on Generate Report. On 5/20/2016 10:53 AM, Charlie Hoffpauir via wrote: >> > Jerry, > > I first created a group. 3. Jerry, you don't need a custom report. Once you have created the group, quit. Then open the regular "individual summary". Where it says "Current person", change that to [your named group]. Don't make any other changes unless you want more or less detail from the "Items to print for each person". If you just want the names of "your named group" then remove all the check marks". Then "generate report". Sue On May 20, 2016, at 10:30 AM, Jerry Bryan via <rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com> wrote: >> I first created a group. Inspected the group and it "looked" like it was >> right.
