I have recently updated to RM7 (updates installed) and after doing some drag and drop between Data bases I know I have some Duplicates, but when I try to use either Duplicate search, or Auto merge I get an error window with send report to RM which I have sent, this is happening on both my lap top Win7 and desk top WinXP , is it me or the program, Cheers Jenny
A couple of weeks ago I also had a problem with merges that may have been the same thing. I clicked on the error message to send the report to RM. I tried to locate the problem area and I think it has something to do with the file that is created in merges called your-database-name.DUP in your database folder. RM doesn't seem to delete this file when the merges are finished or cancelled, although I think it should. You can try deleting that file if it is in your database folder. I cancelled out of the merge screen before completing all the merge suggestions and I think that is what started the problem. I tried to duplicate the problem this morning when I saw your message, but I was unable to do so. I had already downloaded the new update to 7.2.1.0 so who knows, maybe that helped it. My first thought is the ext. hard drive is slower than your computer or reuires a password. I suggest saving to a folder on your desktop and than transferring it to the hard drive. Are you running Windows 10? I have problems with it finding my external hard drive and hanging up for long periods when using Quicken. It worked fine with three or four earlier Windows versions. If I ask for a backup shortly after booting up, it works fine, but it wont even see the external hard drive using the Windows Explorer after I have been logged on for any length of time. Windows 10 keeps sending out upgrades, maybe they will get to this one before too long. And maybe your problem is something else. Facts having the same date are sorted in the order added. The SortDate is the tool to set the order to waht you want. You can suffix the SortDate with -1, -2, -3... to put them in order while preserving the basic SortDate. After the group of end of line ancestors is successfully created, you can do lots of things with it. The quickest and easiest report to produce with the group is probably the Individual Report, but the Individual Report produces a lot of paper as you describe above. You can get much less paper (like none!) by using People View in combination with your group and it's really easy to use. You get one line of data per person, so the list of data is very short. Unfortunately, you can't get B-M-D data in People View, only B-D data because People View does not support marriage facts or any other "family facts" (facts for couples) such as divorce. It doesn't seem to me that there is a good reason for this restriction on couple facts in People View, but the restriction is there. You can get much less paper by using a Custom Report in combination with your group. Setting up a Custom Report in RM is not the most user friendly thing in the world, but neither is it rocket science. Basically you "draw a picture" of what you want your report to look like. Your report will have rows and columns. Most typically, your columns will be data elements such as name, birth date, marriage date, and death date. Most typically there will be one row in the report for each person, although you can have more than one row for each person if all the data you want to see won't fit on one line of text. But if you have more than one row for each person, then your report often won't line up in columns very nicely. When you "draw your picture" of what you want you report to look like, you have a header row with column headers such as "Name", "Birth Date", etc. and you have a data row called Row 1 where you specify the fields you wish to display for each person such as name, birth date, etc. You can have a Row 2, a Row 3, etc. for each person, but as I already mentioned it's not common to do so. After you actually generate the report, you can look at it on the screen (no paper), print it (small amount of paper), or save it as something like a text file or an rtf file (no paper). Pat, Aren't you missing something? Once you've done the pedigree chart and got the correct person, you already have the necessary report available to guide your research. All the facts you are asking for below are in the Family Group Sheet for that person. What could be simpler or more transportable? In addition, RM also offers the chance to use the GenSmarts option under tools. This would provide specific research suggestions. Good luck in your research! I was able to follow them for my grandfather and they worked. But I was totally disappointed with the resulting report. It was a 9 page, alphabetical list of individuals that I don't know what I would do with. it shows their spouse, BMD, and children, but there is no indication of how they are related to my grandfather, so I don't know how I should prioritize my research, or who I should research first. Yesterday, and again today, I sent a 4-step instruction on how to make a wall chart of my grandfather's ancestors. It's much more informative. I can readily see their relationship with my grandfather. It tells me that I have 1 dead end in the 3rd generation, none in the 4th and 5th, and 8 in the 6th, etc. Now I can decide which of these dead ends I should research first. The other benefit of the wall chart is that I can send a jpeg of it to my cousins, or my nephew(who I'd like to get interested in continuing my research), and he can immediately see the path forward. The wall chart is far superior. I suggest our readers should try both methods, and decide which would be better for planning their own research. I'm pretty sure this is what Pat McGrath wanted. Bruce Go to tools and set the relationship to your Grandfather. Then run your report. . Clicking on a person will show his/her relationship to him. (Before you print that is.) You could run a complete relationship report so when the other report is completed you can find the person on it.
