I chose the RM7 menu path Internet > Generate files for a website > RM6 style. The Pre-RM6 style will also work with the bare DWebPro. The MyRootsMagic (Publish online...) option cannot as there is server-side programming required to generate the pages on the fly from the database file it uploads to MyRootsMagic.com. The default settings in DWebPro launched from the CD restrict the server to being seen only by the local computer. That can be changed to expose it to the LAN but use on a public WiFi would mean that anyone on the LAN could conceivably see it. >From what I have read, DWebPro looks to be usable only with Windows (as far back as Win95!). FAQs make no mention of Win 8 or 10 but it works on my Win 10. It may now be somewhat dated. DWebPro is a very complex system because it supports optional database servers, not needed in this case. Yet its default installation is sufficient for the RM filetype websites to be placed on CD/DVD or flash drives and usable with some browsers. Maybe there is a simpler alternative without the depth and breadth of options. Tom, I just want to be clear on what you said/did. If you created the website using RM6 then there are two choices in the Internet pull-down, you chose (or would have chosen) the Publish-Online option? If you created the website using RM7 then the choice of which type of website is in the next box after the Internet Pull-down (Generate Files for a website), in this case you chose (or would have chosen) RM6 style website? Then you created this functional CD using the Dwebpro free 'server' and imbedded the server in the CD/DVD? thanks \s\Rick ================================================WRT========================= ========== I just succeeded in creating a RM6 website on a CD-R that launches a new tab on my default, Chrome browser that was already open on external websites. As far as I can tell, the RM6 website performs normally. Try opening a file with Javascript in it. I think browser security is okay with pure HTML. I don't know what the way is, but it seems to me that there has to be a way to make this work from Chrome. At the present time, Chrome is my default browser. I can go to Windows Explorer, click on an HTML file, and the file will open in Chrome. I can then click on a different HTML file in Windows Explorer, and the different HTML file will open in a second tab in Chrome. This situations may not be entirely identical to the situation in RM, but somehow or other Windows Explorer must be invoking Chrome with the file path for the HTML file as a command line argument to Chrome. Or maybe it's a different kind of argument to Chrome than a command line argument. But it works. Well, I'm testing from my C: drive rather than from a CD. Does a CD make a difference? Jerry
Yeah, plain html (and plain Javascript for that matter) is fine. The security issue is that browsers don't want Javascript accessing files on the local drive. Have a look at http://www.dwebpro.com/ . It came up in a search on "website on a dvd". I think it can autorun a local server from the CD/DVD/USB stick so that may allow the default browser to see it as just another website, not a direct access ti local files. Charlie, I don't know if there is any easy way to do that from a CD. We also discovered that Chrome has to be completely closed in order for that command line argument to take effect. If Chrome is already open when you do it, it just opens the window in the open instance of Chrome and doesn't honor the argument. That's why when RM asks if you want to preview the site after creating it, it tells you that if you're using Chrome you have to shut Chrome down before asking RM to show the preview. - Bruce On Sun, May 29, 2016 at 3:42 PM, Charlie Hoffpauir via < rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com> wrote: > RM instituted the ability to generate files for a website using XML and > Javascript in version 6, and have continued to make that option > available in version 7. RM instituted the ability to generate files for a website using XML and Javascript in version 6, and have continued to make that option available in version 7. It's a very nice process, and I've used for my web site and for a time, tried putting the pages on a CD for our family reunion. The problem with putting the files on a CD is that the browsers web security prevents the user from seeing all of the information. Ideally, I'd like to keep the process that simple. The most straightforward approach I've found so far is to use an older version of Internet Explorer for a browser, and when you start to view the files a message pops up at the bottom of the screen saying to view the files, disable security by clicking on the message.. Edge has no such option, and a google search revealed that there is no way at all to disable the security using Edge. I enter information rather directly, just going person by person adding parents up the tree (i.e.back in time) one generation at a time. Like you I don't indicate anyone being a stepparent. If the status is or was relevant I would discuss it in a note. I'm sure one might want to use it for adoptions. I tried looking for a place to change the relationship status, but until I looked at the book, had no idea that dialog box existed. For those like me who have never seen it, one goes to "Tools", then "set relationships". Mine is automatically set to show the relationship to me at the bottom of the screen, which must be the default. I just tried looking at the box and it changed to the person I had on the screen. I then had to change back, and think I will not go there again! To see problems in your direct line, you could use the 6 generation pedigree view, and look at what shows up as you proceed from recent to older generations. If the pedigree is missing parents, it should be rather obvious I would think. Hopefully, you only have a few problems. I will be interested in seeing how others respond. I am always amazed at the features of the program I have never seen, although I work entering data most everyday. That is correct, Jinny. The DUP file tracks those pairs thrown up as possible duplicates that have been marked Not Duplicate. Deleting it will have the result that those that have not been merged will reappear as possible duplicates. It is possible that a disruption to normal operations could leave the DUP file in a locked or corrupted state giving rise to operational problems and an error message. I've used the merge feature regularly in RM so was concerned when this problem was reported. So I ran the "duplicate merge" option and just found the list of potential duplicates that I've seen for awhile. This is a family that I have very little info on and everyonés first name is "Living". I told the program that these were not duplicates and now I have no duplicates found, which would be correct. I would be curious as to what the DUP file actually is. I still have a . dup file from RM on my drive. It was my understanding that this should contain the records for people who appear to be duplicates and are not. Very useful for all those John's and Mary's that might appear to be similar when looking for duplicates but are not. Let's hope that this is a easy problem to resolve as it is a very useful tool.
