Hi Betty -Once again this is only my way - I'm sure everybody has a way that makes senseto them and that's the general idea. You want a system that makes sense when youfile something AND when you forget where it is and want to find it. My system tries to follow the KISS principle [Keep it Simple, Sweetheart!] I Set up a Folder named Pictures [You can use any name -Pics/Fotos/Slides/ etc] Then within that folder enter a new folder FOR EACH SURNAME YOU RESEARCH. Then within each Surname folder you can break it down as far as you like to a folderfor each family, or each person. I have one for each of my siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc. as they marry and start a family. Essentially a folder for every Family. The key is to move all your media to that One Pictures File and set it as your DefaultFolder in RM - That gives you a single folder for RM to hunt thru for fixes etc. ANDfor you to search thru to find the lost item. Good Luck with YOUR system.Love, Lou From: Betty Stokes via <rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com> To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2016 12:11 PM Subject: [RMagic] Media I need suggestions regarding Media I'm a long time Roots Magic User. I also subscribe to Ancestry. Then I bought Family Tree Maker to sync with my desktop. Then I downloaded my tree (trees) from Ancestry to RootsMagic. In the process I have made it very difficult to have my media I had in Rootsmagic show up in the place I had them before. I haven't actually lost anything. I have just made VERY the process unhandy. When I have made a comment about the Media problem before, the reply was that Roots Magic can find it wherever it is. The problem as I see it is that when I go to TOOLS, PROGRAM OPTIONS, FOLDERS, MULTIMEDIA FILES, everything is not in the same location. To get to the place, I have C:\Users\Stokes\Documents\Genealogy\ (way too much as I am the only user on my computer) On RootsMagic, I added media to individuals from the Surname file where I have like "Stokes Pictures." When I try the "fix" thing, everything I had previously doesn't come up and the media I have from Ancestry doesn't either although it sometimes does if I am doing a search. If I add FTM Media, the pictures will come up not the ones from my surname file. I have 5 trees on Ancestry including one containing my RM tree I uploaded a few years ago and have not been consistent about adding to it. As it is now, I have to go to the Users, etc. item in TOOLS to get to media I choose. I never had a "Gallery" where everything was in one location. It didn't work well with how I was researching. It is pretty obvious that I need to do some relocating of folders and Media but can't figure it out. Any advice? Yes, your database is so large that the relatively slow cd drive could greatly affect the speed of operations. You may have a slow cd drive - standard 1X speed reads around 11 MB per minute; there are drives that can speed up to 24X. Also, your observed speed may be negatively affected if the operating system is starved for RAM. I don’t think this message made it to the list so I am sending it again. A few days back, I tried creating a sharable cd, and at first thought it did not work. Every time I inserted the cd I could access my user name and my details, but the database only came up blank without names. Today, I tried the cd again. After clicking to bring up the cd, it took several minutes to bring up any names on screen. After the names I showed up I clicked properties to see if the whole database was there. After about two minutes, that screen came up. Then I tried going from one generation to the next and again it took forever to advance one generation at a time. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I have a database of almost 242,000 names. Is it simply too large to let the cd access the names more quickly? Margaret Scheffler

That was partly my fault. I had a roof leak and gave him my email address. Somehow he got on the list email and has been bouncing around. Remove the Craig Handyside from any emails you send. I'm trying to create a sentence for the death fact that reads one of three ways: 1. John Smith died on date at place name - don't know how they died but know when and where 2. John Smith died of Old Age on date at place name - know they died of 'Old Age' (in Description) and know when and where 3. John Smith was Killed in Action on date at place name - know they died at war ('Killed in Action' in Description) and know when and where I am using the following template at present - which is not working correctly, it always shows "John smith was xxx on date at place name" (where xxx is whatever is in the Description) [person] <?<[Desc]="Killed in Action">|was [Desc]|died< of [Desc]>>< [Date]>< [person:Age]>< [PlaceDetails]>< [Place]>. Thanks for any help. David
