Elizabeth Shown Mills was the one who stated using the NA (US) Manuscripts in an archived discussion on APG listserve. RM set up the template to follow that format from Evidence Explained. For those of you who wish to create your own template you may want to see this pamphlet on the NA site. http://www.archives.gov/publications/general-info-leaflets/17-citing-records.pdf Suzanne On Sat, Jun 9, 2012 at 1:34 PM, Genbits <genbits@charter.net> wrote: > There are five choices in the "military" sources templates. Like Stan, I, too, would prefer to use historically accurate names associated with each event and am disappointed to have to compromise in this respect. Leamington, Leamington Priors, Leamington Spa and Royal Leamington Spa are all valid names for the same place at different times in history. Rob. Hi Nancy, Yes, I'm also anxious to see if there are any customized templates out there in RM land. Thanks Suzanne. I looked at that one but wasn't sure if it was the best one to use but since you mentioned it, I'll look at it again. No need to re-create the wheel! I'm still interested in seeing if anyone has created some customized templates they are willing to share. I recently received photographs of the complete pension and CMSR. Hundreds of photos taken by a friend while at NARA. I want to source them correctly but can't figure out exactly how to make it a good citation. I looked at the templates already in RM5 but all of them are for filmed versions of the records. I tried to create a new source citation, but it just doesn't look right. Has anyone created a source citation, and is willing to share it, for Civil War Pension files and the CMSR that are not filmed, but are digital images of the actual papers? Thanks for helping! -- Tim Cox timdcoxsf@gmail.com San Francisco
I have several locations where I want the historical name also. I have put "(historical)" in the name field. You could also enter the dates by the (historical 1729 -1768) or whaterver the date ranges are. For these locations , I go to the internet and look up the location and use the wikipedia entry and copy it to the notes. Looks to me like this would word great for the Leamington situation. There already ways help trace the migration patterns for particular area/times etc so I would not be interested in some report that showed a breakout in the manner you are asking for in West Virginia / Virginia. I have counties in NY which changed names back and forth a couple times. I don't want to see all the entries then as it would just probably muddy the brain even more! Learning about migration patterns in general seems to be of more use overall, up the Hudson, out the Erie Canal, across the Great Lakes or looking at the land routes though Ohio will keep you busy for awhile. The 1861 split from Virginia to form West Virginia also an interesting period. I would rather use software and historical information outside of RM to gather this info. This only applies to the United States, but I use AniMap (www.goldbug.com), which is a historical county boundary mapping program. I can plot a town and go to the date that I want and then see where the county lines are to identify which county the town is in. I also prefer to be historically correct with my place names.
Guess the question is, do we want the history or an easy way to currently visit the place? I have taken a slightly different approach. I use the name at the time of event and put the new name in parens with the word was or now. Examples: Angers Abbey, Angers, Maine-et-Loire (was Anjou), France Constinople (now Istanbul), Turkey Elizabethtown (now Rahway), Union County, New Jersey Hockessin, New Castle County (was Chester County, PA), Delaware As with most things in life, there are multiple ways to do anything, so this is just another method. I like it because it shows were the records originally were kept, which in many cases remain today. > > I have several locations where I want the historical name also. Stan and Robert I have one suggestion. Try the new county check. Enter the name of the location and the county and state with USA and have County Check active. See what you get. It has not proven its full potential yet. Some have found city locations not available, but still worth a try. Using GeoCodes and Notes will do just fine once you are looking at a particular event in a given person's life. However, suppose you have an ancestor, Harlow Clark, who lived in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1880. You want to research other ancestors of the Clark and allied families, some of whom lived there prior to 1863, when the town was in Virginia. It would be convenient if you could do a place report that included all the relevant events, whether in Virginia or West Virginia. I guess what I am asking is whether RM might be given an alternate place facility comparable to its alternate name facility. RM would then be able to link many alternate historical place names to the same modern place name. I like to have historically accurate names associated with each event where possible. I am currently researching German ancestors, and, as Jon notes, they are notoriously fluid. GeoCoding or modern naming will locate places unambiguously, but they do not enable us to easily produce historically accurate reports. Is there a way to tell RM that two different names refer to the same place during different historical periods?
You can put the older name in notes and use the modern geocode if there is one. For others use the "AKA" with older name. In some of the EU countries and others as well the places changed names with the officials in office. Post Offices did too and may have been located on the county which changed too with the move. Just indicate what the name was and RM will accept it. The note is for the reader not RM. *** Jon On Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 11:21 AM, Stan Armstrong <mfseeker@gmail.com> wrote: > Is there a way to tell RM that two different names refer to the same > place during different historical periods? > > > =================================== > RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS > WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: > http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -- -- Jon P Czarowitz, NHC, GF, GGF, IGC Hempel Genealogist since 1986 International Genealogist for http://www.clancunninghamintl.org RootsMagic 4 http://www.rootsmagic.com CUNNINGHAMS TOGETHER - CUNNINGHAMS WORLDWIDE!
The only list RM works with is modern names. If you put in a different name RM will accept it, but can't automatically geocode it. Also the county check will tell you it is not a valid name maybe. I still use them though. Can you give an example of what you mean? Thanks. I found that when printing reports but I want the list reversed just looking at the list. I rarely print reports. I use the program as a database where I can see what I have. That's why I switched to rootsmagic. I didn't have to too deep into a person to see all the information I have on them. Before legacy I had PAF and everything was in notes, in chronological order. Yes you can reverse the place list. The first check box on the place list, right after you create the report. REVERSE PLACE NAMES. Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler
Hi Gina, Thanks for your comments. I was thinking of trying the parents-family report to see what I can see before going back and unsharing. I will try that. I also don't like how the place name list is only in alpha order by city, county, etc. I used Legacy before and I had an option to have the list be in the "reverse" order. I create all my sources by location. To me location is the most important thing.
