    3. Didn't that PlaceDB.exe work with RM3 als0? I have all the disks for the old FO and early RM's. Also have kept all copies of the RM revisions also. Have not tried to put RM3 in Windows 7 64 bit. Has anyone else tried it? Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler

    3. David - I have FO10, FO7 and FO6. I have tried to see what is on each disc, but it does not tell me if Place Finder is on any of those discs. There are the following listed on the FO7 disc: Abstract Autoplay Autorun Bibliog Copyright FOWIN Readme Setup Setup.W02 Setup.W03 I have Windows7-64 bit and FO7 and FO10 will not work with it - the discs say Win95 and Win98. When I tried to run setup, it tells me it is not compatible with the version of Windows that I have. If you think you could use this, I would be glad to send the discs to you. I would imagine that Bruce would not mind this, as they are so old and out of date. If this is a problem with the copyright, I am sure someone will tell me. Joy Gulden On 6/10/2012 2:52 PM, David E. 3. Thanks for the tip, Paul, but you appear to have completely missed the point. I use the approach you suggest but do not find it an effective method of dealing with the issue, although it may be acceptable if there are few Place Names and/or the user has an exceptional memory - neither of which applies in my case! I use a single Place Name and I have included in the Place Notes (as you suggest) the history of the Place Name with the various different names included but that does not produce, in reports, etc., events with the Place Name as it was at the time of the event so does not necessarily correspond with, for example, addresses in censuses of the time. An alternative would be to create separate, historically accurate Place Names (as has been already suggested and as I have tried in the past) but this could be confusing and would hinder searches by Place Name; for example, the Who Was There List. This might be less of a problem if one created separate Place Names using the historically correct names (annotated "(now....)" as has also been suggested) but then entered the modern-day name as the Abbreviated Place Name (in the absence of an Alternate Place Name) and report settings could provide the option of using the 'correct' Place Name the first time then subsequently use the Abbreviated Place Name. There's probably no one-size-fits-all solution but it is very interesting to learn how others have effectively handled the matter. For reports I'd recommend MISC using same date to insure best printing order <X no longer exists under the X name, now known as Y> Several MISC one for each name variation might help searching for events in a common but changing name place Real Purpose of "Place" -to know where to find records TODAY In Pennsylvania a great deal of the western part of the state was over time carved off from an original county say Bedford County if I recall correctly. 3. It would be a very welcome enhancement to have a feature such as this. Probably also a very difficult one to realise in a way that pleases all. Place Details would also benefit from a similar treatment as street names and addresses, building, institution and cemetery names change over time. Places and Place Details would need a date range. Should the autosearch on entering a value in a Place or Place Detail field restrict results to those fitting within the event date or offer all possible matches along with their date ranges? What if the event has a date range that spans two or more place values? - which one or all partial matches should be offered. What geocode is applicable when an older place is now part of a larger place? - should the part inherit the geocode of the whole? How to handle places that might have been known by more than one name at the same time, e.g., the aboriginal name and the colonial name, or the French and the English names? - is language another property of a place that needs to be stored and reported? Reports: should reports automatically output the current place/detail along with the historical place/detail for each event? - as part of a sentence in the narrative, or "x now y" in lists, FGS and Indiv Summary? - or maybe as a footnote/endnote? Would probably require an extension to the Sentence Template Language for Place and PlaceDetail, e.g. ":Historical", ":Now", ":Language(English|French|...)". I can think of many other complications that would need to be addressed in the necessary redesign of the database and revision of the program. It seems to me that a very extensive and pervasive change would be needed. 3. As RM is now configured we can merge places. That replaces all the chosen alternatives with the primary place. What would be useful for the problem of alternative place names would be the ability to link places, so that every alternative place would point to the primary place without removing the original alternative name. If we had such a feature, how might we use it? I assume that is how alternate personal names works. Stan genealzube wrote: > The problem with that is that you can't search on them. 3. All the source templates are referenced to EE's 2007 printing. Each to his own and I have seen her reference it before on the TGF email list to use NA. Which ever works the best for the individual? No two of us think alike. I was going to suggest to look at her website also. Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler

    1. Re: [RMagic] Source Template for Civil War Pension files
    2. Bless you for asking this question, Tim! I'm in the same situation (plus I'm new to RootsMagic). Someone (somewhere in my readings) recommended citing each document in the pension file (each one you use for gen. purposes, anyway) as a separate source. I can see that this could have some merit, especially since my pension files has several dozen documents, only a few of which contain gen. information. I'd love to hear what others who are experienced have done with regard to Civil War pension files. Thanks, Nancy. -----Original Message----- From: Tim Cox <timdcoxsf@gmail.com> To: ROOTSMAGIC-USERS <ROOTSMAGIC-USERS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sat, Jun 9, 2012 3:45 pm Subject: [RMagic] Source Template for Civil War Pension files I recently received photographs of the complete pension and CMSR. Hundreds of photos taken by a friend while at NARA. I want to source them correctly but can't figure out exactly how to make it a good citation. I looked at the templates already in RM5 but all of them are for filmed versions of the records. I tried to create a new source citation, but it just doesn't look right. Has anyone created a source citation, and is willing to share it, for Civil War Pension files and the CMSR that are not filmed, but are digital images of the actual papers? 3. I forgot to say, one source citation for a Pension File of one number [my file from 1983]. I have my original request sheet to NARA and had a number on it for the file. I found on fold3.com, one of the title sheets. Includes two certificate numbers. The pension still has one number for all the files included in the Pension record, no matter, what type they are. Letters, affidata or Pay stubs.... Less confusing to find again if you use the record number and not split up the file. Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler

    3. There are five choices in the "military" sources templates. Are your copies photo copies or digitized copies? I would choose one of the under Military choices and use one for all parts of one Civil War Pension. I have affidata's request for , payroll sheet etc.. in one Pension File with one record number. I may use one of template: Military. Mine are actual photo copies direct from NARA [1983] way before any were digitized and put on web sites. But I always state in the footnote, date of assessed and type of copy. I also have not transferred this source from the way it was in free form before the templates became available. There are some other more inclusive free forms templates in forum section on Tips and Helps, that might work better for you. TomH has one on his website I believe. Tough choice. Remember you want you or someone else to be able to find it again... Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler
