Since there are quite a few programs that support witnesses (RootsMagic, TMG [The Master Genealogist], Heredis, Brother's Keeper, Genbox, etc.), a new industry designed and supported exchange format file to replace GEDCOM would be welcome. But like any consortium, it will take time to get buy-in, to develop and test the data model and interoperability, and then to incorporate the resulting format into the various genealogical software packages, not just those that support witnesses, but all the other active programs that currently produce or read GEDCOM files. (There are some defunct programs like Ultimate Family Tree and Relatively Yours that supported witnesses, but are no longer supported, which means they will not be updated, ever.) To be sure, this is no short term solution, but it may have an impact on whether software developers consider adding an option to write out witness or shared facts as individual facts into a GEDCOM file. Does anyone know if shared events appear on an exported GEDCOM file? I have an individual who marries and the witnesses are her brothers and sisters. Each of their individual records show the fact that they were witnesses. However when I expect the file to my TNG site the 'witness' event does not appear. Shared events are not supported by standard GEDCOM and TNG does not recognise RM's extensions of GEDCOM that do. This continues to be a major pitfall that could be overcome to a degree if RM would convert shared events to individual events on export to standard GEDCOM. Here is what the help file has to say about the History List: RootsMagic maintains a "history list" in the History sidebar of the most recently visited individuals in your database. Displaying the History list Select "Search, History" from the menu to bring the history list to the front in the sidebar, or click the History tab at the top of the sidebar (4th tab from the left with the round icon.) Going to a person in the History list You can highlight any person in the history list to return to that person in any of the navigation views on the main screen. You can also do "Search > Back" from the menu or Ctrl+Left to move back to the previous person, or you can do "Search > Forward" from the menu or do Ctrl+Right to move to the next visited person. You can also customize the toolbar <customizing_the_toolbar.htm> to add Back and Forward buttons to the toolbar so you can move through the History list with a click of the mouse. Can anyone out there tell me what the following dialogue (or "error?") means? "You have reached the beginning of the history list." It just popped up as I was working with the current version of RM5, but I've never seen it before so I am wondering what it means. Not knowing what else to do, I simply shut it down and went on but what does it mean? A few minutes earlier I had clicked on the "Share" button on one of my entries to see what came up, but again without knowing much about it I just shut it off. Hi David, Thank you for you emails - I will contact RootsMagic and see if they can provide me with my license key. I did have FA installed on another machine but then I bought a new computer and the other one is gone. (I pulled out the hard drive, etc. and trashed it). Dee, One more question, but do I understand that you may have FA installed on another machine? If so, click on "Help" then "About Family Atlas" and it will give you your license key if you registered it at the time. Write it down, then download the current software and register it again with that registration key and you are back in business. David E.
