Hi everyone, A dear cousin sent me a gedcom from his RM3 program as an attachment. I have RM4 on my computer, but Win 7 will not let me open his file. When I tell it to open the file from a program installed on my computer, it shows a list of programs, but RM4 is not in the list! I tried importing the gedcom from RM4 but Win 7 refuses to show it to me. Can anyone coach me through this one? Oh, did I say I despise Win 7? Wish I had my XP back, that I understood. I'm not sure why you need an example, but the most recent occurrence of the problem was when I was entering data from "The American Genealogist" vol. 85, Jan 2011, entitled "A Fresh Look at the Parentage of 'Mayflower' Passenger Joan (Hurst) Tilley" by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, FASG. There are several instances in this article where double dating is used for dates prior to 1583/4. One example is the baptism of Joan (Hurst) Tilley which occurred 13 Mar 1567/8. Another was the probate date of her grandfather John Marshe's will which was 15 Feb 1558/9. There is no go reason why we shouldn't be able to have these double dates recognized by RM. When a date is unknown or possible of two years like 1850 or 1851, there is provision in the Help files explaining how to do between or bet or after, or before. That is what most of us have done over the years. Use F 1 or Help: Dates click on Double and scroll down the screen to see all the modifiers that you can use. Double dates in the software's mind is actually as was quoted. Software is logical and can not always do other than what is programmed. To me I would not ask to have it programmed for this as there is usually a reason for the two dates rather than the official one. Nettie's Genbits Annette DeCourcy Towler

It was 1582 when Pope Gregory decreed the change in the calendar. Anything prior to that would not require double dating since there was no calendar change. How much earlier? It can't be earlier than 1583/4. Drew Smith On Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 7:30 PM, Jim Bullock <j.b.bullock@comcast.net> wrote: > Is there a way to get RM to recognize double dates in the 17th and earlier > centuries?
This is an apparent flaw in RM. The scholarly journals certainly use double dating before 1583/4. It would be desirable to have the ability to use them in our databases. Is there a way to get RM to recognize double dates in the 17th and earlier centuries? Jim Bullock Littleton, Colorado
Here is the explanation from the help file. "The Gregorian calendar moved the start of the year to January 1. The Gregorian calendar wasn't adopted by the British empire (including its colonies, the US and Canada) until 1752 and other countries as later as 1923. In the intervening years, dates between Jan. 1 and Mar. 24 were written as 15 Feb 1675/6 to indicate the year was 1675 on the Julian (or Old Style) calendar, but was 1676 on the Gregorian (or New Style) calendar. RootsMagic displays the year with one digit after the / for most years, except it shows 2 digits for a decade, i.e. 1679/80, or 4 digits for a century, i.e. 1699/1700. Double dates entered with years before 1583/4 are treated as unrecognized dates, while double dates entered for 25 Mar to 31 Dec after 1583 are also treated as unrecognized dates." Alfred Thanks. I did not find your posting yesterday to RootsMagic Forum, but I did see a previous posting of yours and used it as a guide to do the wall-chart version described below. I used your suggestion below in my "workaround" described below. This worked pretty well, but it took a long time to unlink all the non-direct wives, siblings and children, and then to delete all the un-needed wordage in the narrative format It would be nice to be able to produce a "Relationship Chart" type of chart, and include pictures and some notes. I just posted the opposite of this on the RootsMagic Forum yesterday. (I think) Drag and drop your ancestors to a new, empty database. Here is a candidate for the RM5 "Wish List": - A "Relationship Chart" type report which would include key facts, a picture and notes, or - A descendant narrative report which is limited to a direct line. I needed a report giving all the information I had about 8 generations in a direct line. I did a "workaround" by opening a new database with the desired descendant line, cutting all the links to the numerous non-direct-line persons, printing a descendant narrative report, and cleaning it up in Word Also, I used the wall-chart feature to do this. It had 3 facts and a picture, but it did not include notes. Is it possible to program this someday, or are there any other ways of doing this? H. Frost Prioleau Piedmont, CA hfrost@prioleau.com
Are you trying to click on a database and have it open in the program? Since both RootsMagic 4 and 5 use the same extension for their data files, Windows does not know the difference, therefor you have to set the file association in Windows to the v\program version you want to use to open a RMGC file. The one you set will always be te one called when you double click on that kind of file until you change the association to the other one. In my opinion, double clicking on the file is no easier than opening the program first and opening a file from that program's file folder. (Especially when you have more than one program which use the same file name extensions for their data) Alfred ============ Jon Czarowitz wrote: > Thanks Alfred, but that was not the problem. Thanks Alfred, but that was not the problem. I wanted to open from the database. I have multiple databases and opening from the icon makes me go thru a large selection to get the one I want. It is fixed. A MS XP problem. Closed programs, rebooted and reinstalled RM 5.0.3.1. This puts RM 5 as last version installed (again). I am assuming you want the startup icon on your desktop. Find the program with Windows Explorer, it's probable location is C:\Program Files\RootsMagic 5\ RootsMagic.exe. Make the Explorer window small enough so that you can see part of your desktop as well. Right click on RootsMagic.exe and drag it to a spot on your desktop. Choose the option to create a shortcut here. The 4 and 5 icons are a bit different so you should be able to tell them apart, but you can rightclick on an icon and change it's name.
