    3. Version 3.2.6 update is still available at http://rootsmagic.com/Updates/RootsMagic/ Your CD might have a valid product key that will work. If you previously registered RM3 and your email address with RootsMagic, they will have your key on file and can email it to you. I think it is different from your RM4 key. But I assume the only reason you are wanting to install RM3 is to be able to "restore" your cousin's backup to your drive so you can import his database into RM4. You could avoid the hassle of the keys and questionable installation on Win 7 by merely changing the backup filename's extension from ".rmb" (or whatever it was in RM3) to ".zip". I think Win 7 will then let you see into the file as a folder; select, copy and paste all the files into a temporary working folder; you may not need any other UnZip utility. That procedure will decompress the copies and extract them to individual files which RM4 File>Import can then see and work on. 3. Jim, I disagree, because as students of history we should recognize that any pre-1583 date in England would have January-March dates happening *after* April-December dates (at least as far back as 1155). It's a matter of understanding European history and the calendar. No clarification is needed. If you're still worried that your audience won't understand, put an explanation in a note field. Drew ---------------------------------------------- So as students of history why do we use double dating at any time prior to 1762? Don't we all know about those Jan-Mar dates. In England the 1583 date had no significance. They didn't recognize the Gregorian calendar until 1762. All Jan-Mar dates before then including those before 1583 should be subject to double dating. As I've mentioned previously, experts in the field do use double dating prior to 1583. Jim

Files do not have any association with a program, until you tell Windows that such an association exists. A GEDCOM file does not have any information in it that says 'I am a file that must be opened by RM4', unless you tell Windows that every file with the suffix 'GED' should be opened with RM4. GEDCOM files can, after all, also be opened by text editors, and by rivals to RM. I hate W7 too. It dumbs down the user experience so much that it makes life more difficult, not less. -- Regards Dave

    3. It would be easiest for him to make a backup using RM3 and send you that file (it is actually a compressed ZIP file containing many files which make up the RM3 database). However, you will need to unzip it so that RM4 can see all the decompressed files. RM3's Restore function does that job but since you don't have it, you will need to use a ZIP utility such as WinZIP or 7-ZIP (free) to extract the files. 3. Isn't the problem that RootsMagic does not treat January-March dates before 1583 as being later than the April-Dec dates of the same calendar year nor does it recognise dates in the 1451/2 format? That is, the only way to enter a January-March date from the Julian calendar before 1583 and have it sort after the April-Dec dates of the same year is to enter it with the year value of +1, i.e., enter it using the Gregorian calendar, even though that calendar did not exist at the time. In effect, one must enter all dates using the Gregorian calendar in order for them to sort correctly. Thus pre-1583 dates must be converted from Julian to Gregorian at time of entry. I'm not a calendar nor genealogical reporting expert and fortunately do not have any ancestry having such early dates but I empathize with Jim that there is a logical inconsistency: If I can enter Feb 2011/2 and RM assigns a sort date of Feb 2012, why can't I enter Feb 1451/2 and have it equally recognised as a valid date format and assign the sort date of Feb 1452. That 2011/2 date is long removed from the advent of the Gregorian calendar and its overlap with the Julian so why should it be valid and the pre-Gregorian not? 3. Jim, Yes, England was using *only* the Julian Calendar in both 1450 and 1750. The purpose of doubledating is to show what a date would look like in both calendars, but only during a year in which both calendars were in use in different places in the world. But no country was using the Gregorian Calendar in the dates you were citing (before 1582), and therefore, double dating for such dates would be nonsensical. This isn't just "mailing list opinions". These are statements of fact. And even "better informed genealogists" would agree. Today we show that as 1450/1 to clarify that those January-March dates were after December 1450, not before. Otherwise a date such as 4 Feb 1450 would be mistaken as having occurred before Dec 1450. 3. There was no Gregorian calendar before Pope Gregory XIII initiated it in 1582. Before that there was only the Julian calendar so there would be no need for double dating. There would be no need for double dating if everyone had jumped to the Gregorian calendar at the same time. But many of the protestant and distant countries used the old Julian calendar for centuries. There are some countries which don't use either one yet. 3. No, the point is that countries like England were using the same calendar in, say, 1450 as they were in 1750 and double dating should be used for both centuries. At any rate, I'll stick with what the professionals are doing in the scholarly journals rather than go by mailing list opinions. I cited only one article from one journal but there are many more as the better informed genealogists are aware. 3. Whew, got it. I opened RM4 and selected import gedcom (other sources) and it pulled in the file! Strange that it would not recognize a previous version of RM, but at least I got it! Nothing like making the old brain work harder! I have RM4 on my computer, but Win 7 will not let me open his file. When I tell it to open the file from a program installed on my computer, it shows a list of programs, but RM4 is not in the list! I tried importing the gedcom from RM4 but Win 7 refuses to show it to me. Can anyone coach me through this one? Oh, did I say I despise Win 7? Wish I had my XP back, that I understood. 3. It's irrelevant that the Pope adopted the Gregorian calendar when he did because the Protestant countries like England did not. They were still using the same calendar in 1750 that they did in 1550 or 1450, so double dating should be used in those earlier centuries for English ancestors. It would depend on the country that would determine which calendar was in use. (Some still use the Julian calendar.) The double dating in that example prior to 1583 doesn't really make sense. The Gregorian Calendar was not in use prior to 1583, so the 1567/1568 date would need to be listed correctly as 1567 (1568 didn't begin until 25 March), and the other date would have been 1558 (for the same reason). So the reason that RM wouldn't have those double dates recognized is that they would be incorrect. I would put in the correct dates (the earlier years) and then you could explain in a note that they were listed as "double dates" in the article. Drew Smith
