I have created a number of GEDCOM files in the last couple of days and have noticed that I appear to have gained 'dbf' and 'fpt' files in the GEDCOM folder. Earliest date appears to be 11 July 2012 Just noticed I seem to also have some 'IMP' files? And 'List_of_PINs_with_bad_words_for_Pimble 20120711' Did I miss something or am I doing something incorrectly? Would appreciate your thoughts. Regards Gerald Guild of One-Name Studies 1788 researching PIMBLE & PYMBLE
Gerald, DBF and FPT files are FoxPro format files, which RM3 used to use. RM4 and RM5 don't use FoxPro format files anymore. That would be why Tom asked whether you were using RM3. If you aren't using RM3, then I can guarantee RM4/5 is not creating the DBF or FPT files. - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com On Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 8:13 AM, Gerald A Cooke <gerald.cooke@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi Tom, > > Thanks for the comments. The dbf and fpt files are probably your database files from RM3 or earlier. Somehow they have been moved or copied to your GEDCOM folder or you have imported into a new database which you created there. The imp file is likely a text file produced by RM when an import does not go perfectly. Hi, Recently on the GOONS (Guild of One Name Studies) mailing list there was a discussion regarding who uses RM for their ONS (one-name study) to which I replied. Through further discussions, it was also asked about using RM for tracking DNA studies. The following was created in the ISOGG wiki to record information on RM, ONS and DNA - http://isogg.org/wiki/RootsMagic Thought others may be interested. I downloaded the newest version of RM (5.0.4.0) this morning but could not figure out what has changed. I could not get to the page that showed what changed. Can someone let me know what has changed? Thanks Gary
Windows 7 is great once you learn its tricks. FTM 12 is only good if you want a tree on Ancestry and want to synchronize the 2. RootsMagic has some great Webinars that teach you everything you need to know. RootsMagic has a free program called Essentials that is free if you want to see if you like it. Of course it doesn't have everything. I find that RM is reasonable, particularly if you are upgrading. You have the best set of coaches in the world in and on this list! Someone has an answer for most questions and there are some who will only ring in if they know a tweak that would help even more. FO was super, that is where FTM lost me! To me FO and now RM are so much more user friendly, plus we have this list for the bumps! Look at how quickly my little puzzle was sorted out! Thankyou Tom, the given/surnames I will keep in Danish, but the places and other wording I would like to translate to English, so I will add the Danish entry to the notes. If anyone has another idea I would be most grateful. Keeping 2 databases is too cumbersome for me so I don't think I will do that. Hello I have recently been given a tree that is in Danish. How do I go about adding it to my tree, I would like to add it in Danish and also translate it into English (or vice versa) as I go so I can then understand it, but want to keep it in Danish too, so over time I will learn this part of my tree in Danish. Is this possible? Thankyou Melissa ----- No virus found in this message. Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 2012.0.2193 / Virus Database: 2437/5111 - Release Date: 07/04/12
I have no desire to restart the overly long and drawn out (and off topic?) discussion that mercifully ended here not long ago, but if anyone would like a copy of it I have just located something on the subject that some of you might like to have. It is a one-page *.pdf document that I saved some time ago that explains the double-dating system, what the different systems mean, and how we got to the mess in dates in the first place. Did you realize that it is not 2012 everywhere in the world today, and that other dates are used even today in the world? Just something interesting if you want a simple and easy to understand explanation of how we got into the confusing mess. If you would like a copy, please reply OFF LIST to the address below and I will be happy to send a copy of the *.pdf document to anyone who wants it. I can't post it to the list for a couple of reasons. David E. Cann decann@infionline.net or on Skype at "david.e.cann"

Double Dating Definition: A system of double dating used in England and British North America from 1582-1752 for dates falling between January 1 and March 25. This was common practice because the new Gregorian calendar, which went into effect in 1582, but was not officially adopted by the British and the American colonies until 1752, recognized January 1 as the first day of the year, while the old Julian calendar recognized March 25 as the first day. Thus, dates between those two days prior to the calendar change in 1752 were often written with both year numbers (i.e. 5 January 1712/13).
