If you want the side panel to open up with another view, go to 'File Options', 'General' and there is a drop down list bottom left that can be set to which view you prefer. I would offer one tip with respect to the side panel on the left side of the screen. Just as the main part of the screen has several views available, the left side panel has several views available (except we probably should call them something other than "views" to avoid confusing them with the "views" in the main part of the screen). The left side panel defaults to its Index tab, and I suspect that most users have the left side panel set to the Index tab most of the time). I would offer as a suggestion that you might find the Family tab in the left side panel to be more useful most of the time than the Index tab. The Family tab in the left side panel is not to be confused with the Family view in the main part of the screen, and the Family tab can appear on the left side panel no matter which view you are using in the main part of the screen. In any case, the Family tab in the left side panel is extremely useful for what I can "short range navigation" - navigating to spouses, siblings, parents, and children. You have to click a person and then click "Go" (part of the excessive clickiness of the program), but for me at least it's the most useful left side panel most of the time. I use all the other left side panels as well, but not anywhere near as much as I use the Family tab in the left side panel. Thanks, Alfred. That not only works, it reveals problems that might otherwise be missed. For instance, I found two cases of multiple births and deaths for the same person. Since they were born and died in successive years, I may be looking at infant deaths, with the next child being given the same name. There is a way to find people with duplicate facts, but only one fact at a time. Reports Lists Fact list -- People with more than one of this fact type -- fact type Generate the report and save it asa text file and open it in NotePad or something so you can sue it to find and edit the listed people. One fact at a time is slow, but you can usually edit several duplicate facts for each person when it finds the first one so that each new duplicate fact listing is usually shorter than the last. I have an indeterminate number of records that have duplicate facts for a person. For example, there may be two or more identical birth or death or residence facts. I would like to be able to find all of these in my database. It would be good if I could also remove them (semi)automatically, but I would settle for finding them all and removing them manually. I suspect that these duplicate facts were the result of my trying to use Family Tree Maker to quickly gather data concerning the family of a particular person into a small, temporary person tree. I would export that data to a GEDCOM. Then I would import it into a new RM tree. Then I would drag and drop it onto my main RM tree. When I performed a cleanup merge, RM would not merge many of the facts because the imported versions contained the usual, useless, generic ancestry.com family tree source reference. Well, that is water under the bridge. I'll try to avoid that duplication in the future. For now, I would just like to clean up my RM database.
Answering my own question here on the workaround I suggested, and as per Tom's suggestion (thanks!): I created a new database, and in the original one I unlinked the father (John H, whose name I wanted on the tree) from everyone else, then dragged him into the new one, and he was given Record No.1. I then dragged the others into the new one as well, and they were numbered 2, 3, 4 etc. Somehow, though, I managed to delete John H from both databases - I think I took him out of the original one first, but he still showed on screen, so maybe I tried to delete him again, but that time he disappeared from the new one. I can't remember the exact sequence, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but having lost John H completely I then had no option other than to delete everyone in that family from both databases. As there were only 8 of them, it didn't seem worth restoring from a backup, and it didn't take long to re-enter them, particularly since the sources and locations were all still in the original database. Anyway, the bottom line seems to be that as long as you don't do what I did and delete the key person, you can force the record numbers into your chosen sequence by dragging and dropping them into a new database in the order you choose. And although I wasn't able to test the final step, I assume the record numbers would stay in the same order when merged back into the original database - though presumably to be totally sure I could have brought John H back on his own first, and then the rest of his family. I've recently been adding some people who are currently not connected to my main tree, but might be in future. One group of these (father and two daughters, plus spouses) shows up in the Count Trees window with the name of one of the daughters, but I would prefer it to have the father's name. Having read previous posts here and on the RM forum I understand that this is because I entered the daughter first, so she has a lower record number - but I wish I'd known that first. In this case I might actually delete them and re-enter them as there are only a few of them with very few events, but I wish there could be a way of renaming these unattached trees without deleting and re-entering - either by renaming the tree or by tweaking the record numbers so that the desired person had the lowest one. As a workaround, though, I'm wondering: if I removed these people from the database and then put them back in, either by drag-and-drop to a new database and then merging again, or by GEDCOM export followed by deletion and re-importing, whose name would the tree have then? Or, to put it another way, when people are removed from the database, do their record numbers stay the same? Or, could I manipulate them to a desired order by, say, unlinking the father and moving him first so that he would be the first person in the new database, and then adding the rest of the family and re-linking etc? Arthur

It's possible that the groom's parents exist only once in the database as individuals but are linked twice to the groom. You will need to unlink them once. Check Help for "unlink". Another check is to turn on the option to display the person's record number after the name - you can do this via Tools-Options-File settings. If it turns out that there are two sets of parents with different RINs, then you will need to delete the extra persons. I don't know what your problem is with names - just open the Edit Person screen on the individual and click on the name row to access the edit pane on the right side. On the assumption that the lowest record in a tree names it, you could drag and drop the father to a new database and then his spouse and her descendants and spouses to the new tree and re-link her to the father. Make sure that that tree is as it was in the original database but with the father's name and then delete its members from the original (you will have made a backup first!). Drag and drop everyone (select the Everyone option) from the new database to the bigger one. Should work but I have not tested it. Tom
After my previous questions about Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic, I have downloaded the most recent version of RM and managed successfully to import my data from FTM. I wanted to enter the most recent info, which was the marriage of a granddaughter. Although it's TOTALLY different from FTM (and not as easy for me) I got that in, with the name of the groom and the date and place of the marriage. However in trying to add the names of the groom's parents, I wound up with duplicate names of them and I don't know how to delete, nor can I figure out how to correctly enter the names. Thanks Bruce, appreciate your input. I can now confirm from running more tests that these files are associated with the Progeny Family Publisher software. Panic over for me. RM4 and RM5 don't use FoxPro format files anymore. That would be why Tom asked whether you were using RM3. If you aren't using RM3, then I can guarantee RM4/5 is not creating the DBF or FPT files. - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com
Hi Tom, Thanks for the comments. I currently use RM5, have moved immediately each new release has been made available, so suspect this is not RM3 related. Two things have changed in recent days. 1. A new version 5.0.4 of RM was released and this around the time these files were created, not before. If no one else is experiencing the problem then this takes me to the second change. 2. I have purchased Family Publisher from Progeny Software which creates some unusual charts (360 degree fan charts etc, which I liked). It uses GEDCOM files I have generated in RM5 to create the charts. I will do some experimenting and recording of times and events. Given that RootsMagic is such a great piece of software and never gives me problems I am leaning towards change 2 as being the source of the dbf etc files. Maybe the clue I was looking for and missed was one of the files is a 'fpt' file! doh! Somehow they have been moved or copied to your GEDCOM folder or you have imported into a new database which you created there. The imp file is likely a text file produced by RM when an import does not go perfectly. Tom
