    3. It is the Sentry Spelling Checker Engine product, possibly used by MS Word. Try opening your GEDCOM with Notepad, which I don't think has a spell checker. Then try opening and spell checking any other document with MS Word. Tom

    3. How are you trying to open it? A GEDCOM file is a plain text file that you should be able to open with WordPad or NotePad. Open the WordPad program first, the using it's File menu select OPEN, navigate to the folder, it sounds like it is the C:\desktop, at the bottom of the window, where is asks "Files of type", select all documents. Navigate to your file, keyes.ged and double click on it or highlight it and click on the open button displayed. You should see a text document, if so, you should be abble to write an email and attach it there. If you really want to see what is in that file, create a new file in RootsMagic and IMPORT the GEDCOM filr you just created. 3. E. A., As the one who started this string (albeit naming the wrong chart), this is going in kind of an unexpected direction but I think I agree with what you are saying. I do still want to know how to print a large PEDIGREE chart just to know how to do it, but what you say about overwhelming a 9 year old with too much information makes sense. Maybe starting with something on a smaller scale would be better, and then expand the horizons if he continues to have the interest he does today. The little guy seems genuinely interested now though, and has for some time and I want to encourage his curiosity so long as he wants to learn. As for the large pedigree chart, I still want to know how to print one or something similar so I guess I will have to try to figure it out myself with a bit of experimentation. I was hoping to share someone's experience who has been there recently, but nothing on printing large pedigree charts so far. . . .except for the one my wife is still doing by hand on a blank 15-generation pedigree chart that we purchased. If the school actually teaches social studies (No Child Left Behind dropped it out of most curriculums unless the teacher can figure out how to work it in) then when they study the Pilgrims, you can bring up the family connection, or the Civil War, you can bring up who fought and where. Just remember that to a younger child, ten years ago is ancient history and don't overdo. One thing we did for the younger children was have a family connection type unit. Student brought in a picture of grandma or grandpa, hopefully the picture was with the child and a recipe that maybe grandma made and the family loved (I say maybe because my own grandother was a lousy cook and we hoped she wouldn't make us treats), or grandpa working on a car, something that they can connect to. We made a bulletin board out of this material and added things like the shape of the state (or country of Mexico) and the child's name. This can work at home as a little project for a scrapebook or just a poster that the chld can work on and use. This worked well in several schools before teachers were told not to do it anymore as there were too many children who had been adopted and didn't know parents (we thought they would use adoptive parents but some asked too many questions about birth parents), some had no idea who dad was or mom was, it turned out there were over 600 kids in our district who were homeless, many living in cars and they had no pictures or stories to tell about grandparents and so on. It was heartbreaking when all this came out. But to your point. A small pedigree chart is good. It will also help your grandchild with that abstract concept of drawing lines to link generations. 3. When my computer crashed, taking my 17000 + with it, my sister mentioned that I had made a pedigree "fan chart" for her son when he was a 4th grader for his school project! Darned if the lovely young man knew exactly where it was (he is 22 now) and presented it to her with pride. Luckily I found an old, old backup, so I am now only missing 3,000 peeps. Sis has ironed that thing out and retaped it. I think it was 12 or 13 generations. It did not go all the way back to our Viking ancestors. I liked to use that to show who needed more research. Best quality - and preferred by commercial printers - is .pdf. If you have Win Vista or later operating system, you will not be able to set the chart paper size within RM and will have to make your pdf creator program the default printer and set the paper size there before saving the chart. 3. I would drag and drop the ancestor of interest and his descendants to a new, empty database. Then do an ancestor report, (maybe with children if there are interesting uncles somewhere) of the grandchild you are speaking of from that temporary database. That way it will only show the one line and the linkage between the Mayflower and the child, not all of the hundreds of other ancestor lines Alfred =========== Jon Czarowitz wrote: > Don't overwhelm him with the full ancestry listings. If you have Acrobat, go into it and select the size paper you are interested in, up to about 4 feet wide. Then generate your Pedigree chart "printing" to a PDF file. Check it out by viewing the PDF on screen, and adjust paper size as needed. When you get the PDF you want, take it to a print shop that has a chart printer, and simply have them print the PDF for you.

    3. Also, at one time, I had an ancestry chart printed by Kinkos. At the time, they had a program that you ran and then stored the output on a flash drive, whuch was taken to the printer and I had my charts. Don't remember how many generations, but it aratred with me and went back to William the Conqueror. 3. Jeannette Pick the version you want before you merge and then put a check mark on the ones to be merged. Clicking automerge will only merge those exactly alike. Watch your list for those that have dots in front of the name indicating it is a county instead of a city. Some counties have same name as a big city. For those with multiple cemeteries it will still have only the one you chose. The next time you select that city, you will have a multiple choice list to choose from for cemeteries. You can merge cemeteries also if needed under place details. *** Jon On Fri, Aug 24, 2012 at 10:47 AM, Jeannette Maxey <jsmaxey@hughes.net>wrote: > What is the best way to merge place entries if I have used different > versions of the name of a place? > > Bedford Co., MI > Bedford County, Michigan etc. > > Is there away to make the change so the reference stays attached to the > individdddual person? > > Jeannette > > > =================================== > RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS > WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: > http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -- -- Jon P Czarowitz, NHC, GF, GGF, IGC Hempel Genealogist since 1986 International Genealogist for http://www.clancunninghamintl.org RootsMagic 4 http://www.rootsmagic.com CUNNINGHAMS TOGETHER - CUNNINGHAMS WORLDWIDE!

    3. Make sure that you don't have your cemeteries or other descriptive things separated and then merged. I did that and did some merges and I ended up with the county with a bunch of cemeteries listed instead of just one cemetery.
