Is there any way to get a list of all the people that are in the data base for a place like a county that would include all the cities or township that have been used in that county without having to do a search on each place name in the data base? There are times it would be helpful to do the same thing for a state. Jeannette

There are also small adaptors that you can buy which plug into a spare USB port on your PC and allow you to connect a second monitor to the adaptor. Some are in the form of a small box, others have the adaptor as part of a cable assembly. They can be a much cheaper alternative then upgrading the graphics card (circuit board) inside the PC, and many PCs these days have the graphics circuitry built into the motherboard (the large main circuit board) so you would have to buy and install a separate graphics card. I have used dual monitors for years, but have always ensured that my PCs were supplied with a good quality graphics card that allows two monitors to be connected directly at the back of the PC. In my workplace the standard office PCs only have a single monitor output, so they bought multiple adaptors and extra monitors to enable us to have dual monitors. They are set up so you can have separate applications open on the second monitor, but you can also change the settings and have the one application spread across both screens, some people use that setting if they are using very large spreadsheets. I have RootsMagic open on my main monitor, and other applications on my second monitor usually, for example a web browser with Ancestry or Find My Past etc on the second monitor while I add or edit information in RootsMagic. Most laptop computers support both the internal screen and an external one via a video connector and can be set to extend the Windows desktop over both, allowing RootsMagic to fill both ( not very ergonomic) or to fill one while something else fills the other. I sometimes use my iPad as an external monitor via wifi with a special app and matching streamer on the computer; it's a bit slow so best not to put motion video on it. Import your PAF database into a new RM database. Review and correct the individuals you want. Then open your working database in RM, it allows multiple databases to be open. Do a backup. Tile the two database views side by side in RM. Drag and drop the individuals from the imported database to your working one. Check Help (F1 key) along the way for any terms you don't understand. Good luck! Probably the easiest to do is to make a new blank database using RM. Then import the PAF file directly into it (gedcom not necessary, but gedcom works). Then open both RM databases side by side. Click on Window on the top toolbar. Then with the 2 screens side by side, you can drag and drop the missing info from the PAF sourced one to your main database. No retyping of data. It is wise to check the imported information to see that it is set up the way you are using in RM in case there is a difference in format or you have changed the way you enter data. If you are using Windows 7, you use a snap (?) screen. I just click on and hold one screen and drag it all the way to the left. Then click on and drag the other screen all the way to the right. They will bounce back to the middle and appear side by side. Or some folks use 2 monitors. I tried that once but was not comfortable with it. Hello Maureen, If you have purchased RootsMagic then you can activate the free version with your registration key without having to download another copy. Upon starting RM you should be presented with a 'Register Now' screen where you can input your key details. Here you will be asked to register either online or by phone. This screen can also be reached at anytime by starting RM and going to Help > Register Rootsmagic Regards, Andrew On 13 September 2012 14:43, Maureen Ellen <maureen.ellen@rocketmail.com>wrote: > I realise that I can contact Rootsmagic help and support team but I would > be grateful if someone would help me to sort out this problem on this list > to avoid a delay. > > I already have the free version of Rootsweb on my computer. Thank you so much for your help Andrew, much appreciated. I'd been struggling and getting nowhere for a while. It was so easy once you'd told me how to do it :) Thanks again, Maureen From: Andrew Kemp <kemp.andrew@gmail.com> To: Maureen Ellen <maureen.ellen@rocketmail.com>; rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, 13 September 2012 1:10 PM Subject: Re: [RMagic] Problem in registering a downloaded version of Rootsmagic Hello Maureen, If you have purchased RootsMagic then you can activate the free version with your registration key without having to download another copy. Upon starting RM you should be presented with a 'Register Now' screen where you can input your key details. Here you will be asked to register either online or by phone. This screen can also be reached at anytime by starting RM and going to Help > Register Rootsmagic Regards, Andrew
I realise that I can contact Rootsmagic help and support team but I would be grateful if someone would help me to sort out this problem on this list to avoid a delay. I already have the free version of Rootsweb on my computer. Today I have purchased the full version online. I downloaded it following the instructions to save it and then to run it. The next step tells me that when I'm prompted I should enter the number of the registration key. I am not being prompted and I don't know how to find the place to enter the registration key. I would so appreciate any help with this. Many thanks, Maureen
I transcribe or abstract the exact text/spelling of documents (in this case, a birth certificate) in the Source Detail Text field. When you open that tab, you will see it is further labeled as "Research Notes (summary, transcription, extraction, or text from the source)." This makes it easily accessible, but doesn't crowd the person's Notes fields, or reports like a Family Group Sheet, with what can be insignificant information. However, it prints out nicely on the Research Notes Report, so I can see in chronological order exactly what the original source documents say.
