    1. [RMagic] New source templates vs. old
    2. David E. Cann
    3. I absolutely LOVE what the RootsMagician has done with the sources and the new templates we have to use, so much so that I am converting a selected number of older ones into new ones to take advantage of what we have now. Unfortunately, unless I am missing something, in order to do this I have to: 1. Create a new companion source 2. Print out a listing of the old source list with citations 3. Enter the NEW source and citation (if there is one) ONE FACT AT A TIME, until I get to the end of the printed list. For sources with few citations, this is not a terribly long process, but in a few cases I have DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of citations, each one of which must be moved one at a time, and for this reason I have yet to even think about some of my sources with a lot of citations. Is there a better way of doing this? I can create a new source, then merge the old one into the new one, but that does not take the citations with it and leave them in the correct place in the NEW source. Am I missing something in this process? Can I merge an old source into a freshly-created new one in such a way that the citations are moved as well and remain as entered in the correct fact? I know the sources themselves will do this, which means sources WITHOUT citations will merge to the new source without problem, but not source citations. I have done this with many of my sources so far, mostly those without citations or very few citations, but I really do not relish the thought of merging some of my larger sources this way and moving citations ONE FACT AT A TIME this way. If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would sure love to hear from you and thank you in advance. David E. Cann decann@infionline.net or "david.e.cann" on Skype

    3. I have been reading Lisa Louise Cooke's _Turn Your iPad into a Genealogy Powerhouse_. (It was published in 2012 and is excellent for anyone with an iPad.) In Chapter 8, "Genealogy Apps," she mentions RootsMagic is now available at iTunes as an app for the iPad. I was going to download and install it, but a search on iTunes doesn't turn up anything ever close. Was the author premature in saying RM is now available? Thanks, Patricia

    3. For some reason, I am really having trouble getting my head wrapped around creating custom sentences. Is there a tutorial that walks you through creating custom fact sentences with an example of what the finished product looks like when it prints out? One example of what I am attempting to accomplish is a shared census fact. I have created the census fact under the principal - head of household. I have added the wife as a witness. The sentence template is: [Role] appeared in the household of [person] in the census< [Date]>< [PlaceDetails]>< [Place]>. The result that I am getting is: [Role] appeared in the household of John Kane..... The result that I am looking for is: Harriet Kane, wife of head of household John Kane appeared in the census........ Is it possible to create a narrative type sentence similar to the above? I would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to achieve my goal. Regards. Ron Bernier, Woonsocket, RI

    3. Maureen When you do this for the duplicate man the families will be merged BUT anybody that appears in both families will appear twice in the merged family - instead of having one wife he'll have two wives (one from each original family), etc. You will also need to merge these duplicates together to get back to a single family. 3. Any of the reports that have the "People to include" parameter allow you "Select from a list" which takes you to RootsMagic Explorer where you can enter this criterion. Alternatively, if you have already created a Named Group using that criterion, the Group can be selected from the "People to include" drop-down list. Thus you could print for just these persons their Individual Summaries, Fact List, Individual List, Multimedia List, Statistics List, Timeline List, Who was There List, Timeline Chart, and Custom Reports. But I don't see any way to print the list that is generated. I can search from 'place list' and get a list of names to print but for only an exact place which will then print. as Franklin Co., Pennsylvanina people will print but I will have to do another search to get Greene Twp, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. Which would not be too bad if I could copy from the prepared list but I would have to go though several more steps before I could even cut & paste them into one document. I don't want to have bunches of partial list saved in my reports. I want a working list I can print. 1. Re: [RMagic] places list

    3. Using RootsMagic Explorer, you could: Find > Any fact > Place > Contains > countyname. You could use this same search criterion using Groups to create a Named Group of those persons with which you can also restrict certain reports to include just those persons. That search criterion might return some unwanted results, e.g., a city or state having the same name as a county like Ontario county, California and Ontario province, Canada. Another way depends on geo-coding: use the Place List report option Print Events Near a Place and enter the geographic coordinates of the centre of the county and a distance equal to half its maximum dimension. I'm not sure if RM uses a circle or square to determine what is included so you may get some places outside the desired area or miss some within it, whether due to shape mismatch or geo-coding omissions or errors.
