That's what I see when the RTF is opened with MS Wordpad. Wordpad and MS Word are like chalk and cheese. Only MS Word will display the RTF correctly (and even then, not exactly the same as the RM Report Viewer. When I open a FGS saved from RM with MS Word 2010, it looks very similar but not exactly the same as what I see in RM's Report Viewer. The most obvious difference was that the Individual photo was complete in Preview but chopped off on the right-hand side in MS Word. What version of MS Word are you using to view your RTFs? If it is a very old version, perhaps therein lies the problem. There is some kind of conflict. When you see the selection of RTF and PDF , turn off the check mark for viewing after saving. Then go to saved location and view. RTF should work with MS word. I can give you a short shot in the dark of using it with RM 5. It most likely will not work. RM 5 uses thumbnails and not the original media. RM 4 used the media itself. The media might be transferrable, but leave original in place for RM version 5 to prevent link loss. Any other ideas wopould have to come from more experienced users. Recently I watched a series of Heritage Collector webinars and think the software would be useful to me as a stand-alone program for organizing and labeling photos as well as sharing them via DVDs and slide shows. (I know I can also do much the same thing within RootsMagic, but some of the photos I'll be working with aren't part of my genealogy, so I don't want to clutter my RM database with them.) One of the webinars included a shot of a screen within Heritage Collector where one can export/import images directly between Heritage Collector and some genealogy programs, including "Roots Magic 4" and "Roots Magic" (no version stated). Does anyone have experience with that, and does it work in RM5? I'd be interested in your thoughts about any pros/cons to using the two programs together. (Heritage Collector is described in the webinars as an add-on to Legacy genealogy software that can also be used as a stand-alone program. The initial response to my inquiry to Heritage Collector was that there's "a little more functionality with Legacy" than with RM, but it's hard to know what that actually means.) Thanks in advance. Linda Johnson
I went down that route for a while until I realized it was counter-productive. While the built in or similar source templates provide form or pattern for improved consistency and can result in more succinct "short footnotes" than can the equivalent Free Form source containing the same information, the screwed up output on GEDCOM export was fatal to my needs. Wanting better short footnotes AND transparent export, I developed the !MyFreeForm3 source template which duplicates and extends Free Form. There is no loss merging from Free Form to !MyFreeForm3 (but no improvement to the short footnote without editing the citation); the reverse direction is lossy but there should be no need to do so. I continue to use the other templates to help draft the citation but save it in !MyFreeForm3. That was smoother in RM4 than it is in 5 because now you have to create and save the master source before you can cite it resulting in a templated draft that has to be deleted; before you could draft source and source details without saving. From that draft, I copy the sentences for Footnote, Short Footnote and Bibliography to a word processor for parsing into the desired !MyFreeForm3 source. Tom On 2012-10-02, at 8:44 PM, "David E. Tom, One more note FWIW. As you suggested, all or nearly all of my sources being converted to the new templates are indeed the old Free Form templates, so that likely does explain what I am experiencing. I will just keep plugging along, doing one source at a time and one fact at a time within that source, but I sure wish there was a better (and less tedious and time-consuming) way than creating a new source and them manually entering the information one fact at a time before deleting the old (and then empty) source. I have done them the same way up to having a list from the old Source list saving in a rtf format. Then merging them & keeping the old list for backup. Reason I made a rtf format as I too noticed that items did not get in the same place. But a lot of mine with the Detail text filled in or if the info was in the notes then moved them to the Detail Text so that they can be printed once in an Narrative Report and not twice. also they were in the right slot, so was able to finish and fix up the rest of the new source template to fit. Yes takes time, but I like it. I have no plans to gedcom to someone that does not have RM. I even talked my cousin into buying it so we can share the database. Others think I am crazy for doing this. But again I am not planning on using the gedcom feature outside of RM. -----Original Message----- From: rootsmagic-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:rootsmagic-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of David E. Cann Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2012 10:50 AM To: RootsMagic Users List Posting Subject: [RMagic] New source templates vs. old I absolutely LOVE what the RootsMagician has done with the sources and the new templates we have to use, so much so that I am converting a selected number of older ones into new ones to take advantage of what we have now. Unfortunately, unless I am missing something, in order to do this I have to: 1. Create a new companion source 2. Print out a listing of the old source list with citations 3. Enter the NEW source and citation (if there is one) ONE FACT AT A TIME, until I get to the end of the printed list. For sources with few citations, this is not a terribly long process, but in a few cases I have DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of citations, each one of which must be moved one at a time, and for this reason I have yet to even think about some of my sources with a lot of citations. Is there a better way of doing this? I can create a new source, then merge the old one into the new one, but that does not take the citations with it and leave them in the correct place in the NEW source. Am I missing something in this process? Can I merge an old source into a freshly-created new one in such a way that the citations are moved as well and remain as entered in the correct fact? I know the sources themselves will do this, which means sources WITHOUT citations will merge to the new source without problem, but not source citations. I have done this with many of my sources so far, mostly those without citations or very few citations, but I really do not relish the thought of merging some of my larger sources this way and moving citations ONE FACT AT A TIME this way. If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would sure love to hear from you and thank you in advance. David E. There are or were Windows tablets and there will be more with Windows 8, all of which should be capable of running the full RootsMagic app or the portable version from a flash drive. However, RM is designed for keyboard and mouse navigation, not for touch screens; you might find it awkward. The Microsoft Surface with keypad in the lid might be suitable but I would not rush out to get one for RM. Better, I think, to buy a cheap net book or small laptop with Windows 7 if it is RM transportability that you are after. David I have been slowly doing this also. David E. Hi Tom, I do already have a small Win7 laptop and run RM from a flash drive on that. When decent Windows tablets come out, I may decide to get one. In the meantime, I've had an iPad for almost a year. I saw Lisa Cooke's book about tricking it out to do genealogy. It is in HER book that I saw RM was already available for the iPad. However, I have learned since that it is not quite ready for the public yet. I will get it when it is available. I personally will not mind if RM on the iPad is for viewing only. Sometimes, I only need it for reference when I go to research at a repository. I'm really slow at data entry on the iPAD screen keyboard, and I don't much like it for keyboard data entry. For me, it's just not convenient to enter data that way. It will be nice though to have availability of my data in RootsMagic just to view and reference when I'm away. (Yes, I know you can get actual keyboards for the iPAD, but if I'm going to do that, I might as well take my little laptop.) BTW, if anyone has an iPad, you might find it really helpful to get a copy of Lisa Louise Cooke's book. She has some great ideas to gain greater productivity using the iPad. (I don't know her and have no connection with the book, other than I'm reading it and getting some great ideas from it about how to use my iPad more productively for genealogy projects. That said, I'm a longtime avid RootsMagic and Windows user. Yes, premature. It was announced in the New Year's newsletter that a mobile app was a goal for this year. Most recently, that it would be a reader only, released by Christmas, for iOS.
