    3. Since Familysearch.org is responsible for granting acces to their data, this is a question best directed to them. Although RootsMagic can connect to the family search website, the developer of RM nor the developers of any of the other software packages that have the ability to connect to Familysearch know when access will be granted to the general public. Familysearch is gradually granting access to the general public. If you contact them directly they may grant you access or they may not. 3. The CountyCheck sounds like an excellent idea, however I like to have the word "County" as part of the location, to help others avoid confusion when there is a town and a county that have the same name. For example, in Iowa, there is a Des Moines (town) and a Des Moines (county). To make it even more confusing, Des Moines, the town, is *not* in Des Moines, the county. For someone who would enter Des Moines, Iowa, I would "assume" they would mean the town of Des Moines, which is in Polk County, Iowa. Other times, though, when I have seen information entered for other states, not being familiar with the other state, I would often "assume" that what is entered could be the county, not the town or the village. At best, it's an impossible guess. Someone asked me if I am using GPS with RootsMagic. Does RM have GPS coordinates that can be entered somewhere? How does that work? I am familiar with GPS and have GPS in the car, but did not know that RM has GPS capabilities. The other person may have meant geocoding rather than GPS, but she said GPS. Another question I have been asked is whether or not there is a Mac version of RootsMagic. If not, are there plans for a Mac version? While on this same thought, I have to admit that I have never used the "RootsMagic to Go". It's my understanding that this allows RM to run from a USB drive on any computer. Is my understanding correct? If so, could a Mac user run RM from a USB drive? (Do Macs even have USB drives? I'm guessing NOT?) I have been thinking about getting a little tablet of some sort. I have been looking at the Android tablets, wondering if "RootsMagic to Go" could be run on one of them, but I don't think they have USB drives... so I think I have answered my own question there. I did find one tablet that did have a USB drive (not Android) which led me to wonder if "RootsMagic to Go" could be run on one of the small tablets. Microsoft is coming out with a Windows 8 platform on November 27th, or so I have read. The estimated retail price is around $200, so I imagine it wouldn't have enough gusto to run "RootsMagic to Go" -- or would it? Next February there is to be another Windows 8 platform tablet coming out that sounds like it can actually load Windows programs and run actual programs, so I will probably hold off and see what the future brings. I am getting ready to do a seminar this coming Saturday on features of RootsMagic v5, so I am trying to get ready for questions that I don't currently use. Thanks to all help anyone / everyone might be able to give me. Brenda

    1. [RMagic] Identifing missing source support data in the database
    2. Red Fenton
    3. The way I have entered by source data in my database results in the following rules. 1) for every fact there should be one or more sources. 2) for every Fact-Source combination there should be a citation. 3) for every Fact-Source-Citation combination there should be a media item attached.   The missing sources from rule 1 are easily identified by "Facts without Sources" list.  Does anyone have any ideas of how i could identify the missing data from rules 2 and 3?  I know I could write a program to analyze the gedcom output from the database and identify the missing data, but I am hopeful of an easier solution. 1. Re: [RMagic] Place Database
    2. David Hodgson-Brown
    3. The place database is used when geocoding the place you have entered. It is a way of giving you a standardized place connected to the address you have entered. It will only use them if you select 'use standardized name', otherwise what is displayed on the screen is what you typed in. This feature was in earlier versions of RM. What is new is CountyCheck. This checks that a county existed at the date you have added, so if you try to add Utah State before the 1850's then the system with state that is didn't exist. I find it helpful, but it is not foolproof, so for example the United Kingdom only existed after 1800 and Great Britain after 1707, but with dates earlier than that it doesn't accept just a County and England and shows that the county didn't exist at the time. It it also completely lost on the London changes over the years. Probably similar problems in the US, but my main research in the the UK so I haven't come across too many. You can switch this feature off completely under tools/program options/CountyCheck, but if you would like to keep it you can just select keep address rather than update it when it gives you a suggestion. As far as I am aware you can't change the way CountyCheck works so it will also suggest adding the country and other details it thinks are relevant every time. 3. I just upgraded from RM4 to RM5 earlier this evening. I installed the "Place Database" but am unclear as to what it is actually supposed to do, or when/how I use it. Can someone please explain? Is there a way to get "United States" to stop appearing as part of the location? My other question is that in some of my previous locations, the word "County" is not part of the name, although I wish it would be. Is there an "easy" way to correct this? I have approximately 35,000 individuals. Thank you, Brenda Hare

    1. [RMagic] Public access to new FamilySearch
    2. William Parker
    3. Thanks Shanna. I do have an LDS account and regularly use nFS as well as Family Tree. But a question came up in the forum about whether or not the public in general can now gain access to nFS. I work in the local Family History Center so I wanted to check it out for myself. So I created a "FamilySearch" account using different sign-in, e-mail, etc. My previous post was about the results.

    3. Bill, That is because your LDS Membership Number is not linked to your account. Go to ldsaccount.lds.org and log in and you can add it there. That will give you access to new.familysearch.org. Then in the Help Center under Family Tree you can click on the access link to gain access to the Family Tree. 3. I'm not a Mormon. I had been on the waiting list for months. Suddenly, a month ago, without notification I discovered by accident that I had access. Try both new.familysearch.org and familysearch.org. The newest incarnation, Familysearch Family Tree, is accessed through familysearch.org, but it isn't yet integrated into RM. 3. Go to: http://www.rootsmagic.com/Updates/RootsMagic/ And download the "RootsMagic 5.0.4.1 Installer" to a folder on your computer, the desktop will do. I had that shut down the downloading one time but it seemed to start where it had left off the next time, although I am using Firefox. After the download is complete, you can double click on that downloaded file and it will install the update for you. If you have RM4 on your computer it will ask if you want to delete it or overwrite it or something, just answer NO and it will update RM5 for you. For this operation, you have to have RootsMagic shut down. Alfred ================= dlwe45@aol.com wrote: > The web site does not give me the option to download without having the program turned on. 3. Only by editing the sentence templates for that source template. But you cannot edit built in source templates. You can make a copy of it and the copy will be editable. You can make a new master source identical to the one giving you problems but using the editable source template, merge the old source into the new source and edit the new source template sentence templates to give you the footnotes the way you want.
