At last, I have time and inclination to scan the box of family photos. I was wondering if I could get some input as to what everyone is doing. Are you scanning both sides of the photo? I have some names written on some. For a few I recognize my husband's handwriting and recall that he wrote the info about 10 years ago probably when we went through the images. How are you tying the 2 sides together? with names? combining them together in one image? I've been adding the photographer's name and his location if they were taken by a professional. It seems that some history of the image or things that you may have learned might be interesting in the future. I have some photos of neighbors, that evidently became friends as they had the photos. I only figured this out from looking at the census and who lived close to them. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Is there a source that addresses how one might handle this? Jinny Angelis
Hi Jinny, I have been collecting family photo's for the past 5 years and have worked out a pretty good system for me and my family. For each collection, I open a folder on my desktop and name it accordingly, i.e. Grandma Bev's pictures. Then I scan all of that collection. My scanner gives each new scan a file name of scan 1, scan 2, scan 3..... As I am scanning, I write all I know about that photo, so it looks something like this 1. Bev & Jim Thornton Dec 1984 2. Earl & Marge Wahl Sept 3, 1977 3. Bub & his first wife 1982 or whatever is written on the back and what I know about each photo. I then make up a word doc and input this all into it. This way when I ask other family members what they know about these photo's there is no guessing what I wrote. I put all the photo collections that I have that connect to whomever I am sharing with, along with a folder with my word doc printed up. Then I ask them as they go through the photos if they can add or identify anyone in the photos to write them down with the coordinating file number. And then I adjust my main word doc with the updated info. If there is conflicting data I write who submitted what info. When I say collection, I mean all the photo's I get from one person. I have been lucky enough that my family has been really trusting and they let me "borrow" their photo's. I bring them home, scan and label every photo. Then if they are not in archival quality boxes, I organize the photo's and place them in appropriate boxes. I have found that once family members see all the work I do and how I care for them and give them back better than I received....other family members offer up their photos. I have only had one family member not want to let me "borrow" her photo's, so I went for a visit and took my scanner and we had a great time going through all her photo's together. And they never left her house and she was so happy about that. :) I hope that I have helped in some way. This has been the most effective way for me to deal with so many photo's. I have about 14 collections. And each one brings me smiles. This way also, will help with keeping the link with RM when you add a photo to your database. Happy Scanning Mindy Wahl
I would scan both sides with the same file name but add "front" and "back" to the title. Being able to see both side in their entirety provides clues you may not realize are there. This includes the photographers address as well as details about the edges of the photo....can be helpful in dating the photo. For my Father I used Education , School and year. Then used the school yearbook for the source. Could be used for multiple years that way. I use WorldCat for citations. In RM I use freeform. Here is one done in Turabian style. Hauser High School, and Hauser Junior-Senior High School. Not to post another email about nFS, but if you have been signed up for the old FS, follow my directions from yesterday, on connecting to the nFS with RM4 or RM5. I was able to connect yesterday to nFS with RM5. (I have just upgraded.) I just wanted to thank Bruce and his team for RootsMagic, as I just found a new cousin from one of my MOST elusive ancestors!! Using RM5, I was able to see the email address of the individual who submitted the information I found last night. She just responded to an email. Next question: Is there any way to import the email addresses of submitters from nFS? Thank you, Bruce, and your team. You are fantastic!! Brenda in Iowa
Sorry to send a nFS mail, but as my old login let me into the new familysearch... and I could do some looking around... I went back to RM5. Now the question is how to effectively use it. Very interesting. Found a bunch of matches to review. Should be fruitful. I have downloaded the webinar to view later this evening. I'm sure there are a lot of good tidbits in there. I had hoped to be able to see my person and the FS person side by side like when we get a duplicate match in RM5. I could do this which was great but when I went to edit my record I was unable to see the FS record that had the info I wanted to insert. It was covered full by a full screen edit record. Is this the way it works? Maybe copy the text from FS first and then go edit? Has anyone done any of this? Hopefully Bruce addresses some of this in the webinar. There is hope. I did not ask for new id or if I did it was so long ago that I have forgotten. I do know that I spent a lot of time logged in on the Pilot version and have spent a lot of time on the old FS database. Actually thought I made a dent and got a change made that made it easier to copy data out of the old FS. The info from the Pilot was easy to copy and I got spoiled! Off to dinner! Jinny Angelis

They are trying to correct bad data and eliminate duplicates in the process. Basic facts are being released first with the photostats of the originals. Many old databases they have were hand typed from hand written pages. You do understand that FamilySearch is owned and operated by the LDS Church and is primarily for the benefit of LDS members? And that access to it is not a function of RM, but LDS procedures? And that when a list administrator asks that a thread be stopped because it is not relevant to the purpose of the list, good list users knock it off? No matter how badly they want access to something that is not a feature of RM. If you want to complain, direct your complaints to LDS and FamilySearch. You are connecting directly when you search from RM using family search. The reregistration is the key to additional public items. The area you mean is for LDS members only and will still lock up, I think. So many parts to the new one. They are opening up the mountain full of archives slowly and checking the data for correctness as they go. Like taking your first database and rechecking the facts, etc in it against the current one. For anyone having problems NOT being able to access the nFS website (cannot login)... I contacted the people at FamilySearch this afternoon. I explained that I had an old login to FamilySearch, but could not get it to work on the nFS. She told me to log into the old FS. She then told me to go to HELP and search for "ACCESS NEW FAMILY SEARCH". I did that and finally found a link to the Family Tree, which she said would soon be the replacement for the new Family Search. Once I clicked on the link, I was in the new Family Tree. She said during the month of October, they would be changing out the current new Family Search with the Family Tree. I can now log into the nFS with my old FS id and password. LIFE IS GRANDE!! Because New Family Search is now divided in 2 sections, the old login doesn't work. LDS members had to reregister with their member number to gain access. Yes RM can access both, but the login is needed to complete the process. Once you are reregistered you will find additional access to many of the locked up files. They are releasing them slowly to the public. I don't understand why these are not listed with the RM Blog. Legacy has been listing the new available stuff in their newsletter. I signed up for Legacy, but don't use it. The newsletter has good stuff, but they charge for webinars and not reusable. Jon *** On Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 2:46 PM, David E. Actually on tablet that I looked at (cannot remember which one because I looked at about 2 dozen different brands and models) had an add on keyboard that had a USB connection for a mouse, if you were so inclined to have a keyboard and mouse. It was a tiny keyboard, but still a keyboard. This was not an Android O/S, but I cannot remember what it was. That was the only brand and model that had a keyboard that could be purchased as an add on device. I often would like to have something available, just read only, just so I can verify a birth date / death date, etc. When traveling, I try to print out everything that I think I might ever want to know on the trip, and put into a notebook. I also do carry my laptop with me, but hate to take it into some libraries, and especially court houses, when I'm there to search, not look through a lot of books. Once in a while I will see a name and wonder if it's one of my ancestors / relatives, but I don't know the exact time period my person might have been there, so I'm never sure if it could be mine or just someone else with the same name. This is a good time to have some sort of tablet with my info in it. I do thank you for responding. It will help me a lot in case I get asked questions this Saturday about Macs and features that I really don't use (yet). I realize I'm not going to be able to answer all questions, but I can at least give some help. Paul, Drew is the moderator of this list, so I'm pretty sure he knows how to make a filter ;-) This was a request from the moderator trying to keep threads on topic, not from a user. As for New FamilySearch / Family Tree being an "unrealized option of RootsMagic", RM has had support for NFS for years, and we are working on support for Family Tree (the API for FamilySearch Family Tree is still in beta and we wouldn't be allowed to release it right now even if we had it working perfectly). We have *NO* control over when FamilySearch provides access to the general public to any of their products (NFS, Family Tree, etc). - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com On Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 8:05 PM, Paul Truzzi <paul.truzzi@gmail.com> wrote: > Drew, > > I understand your impatience with this thread.
