    1. [RMagic] RM 6 Hangs up with Windows Speech Recognition
    2. Anne Percival Kruszka
    3. I often use Windows Speech Recognition to transcribe obituaries, marriage announcements, etc. into RootsMagic. Today, using version 6, it froze when adding a new source. It allowed me to enter the name of the periodical, but after that it froze and I had to ctrl-Alt-DEL to get out of it. I tried restarting RM and trying again, with the same result. * Anne Kruszka*

    3. I wonder if it's an array problem. Just speculating, I have no idea how the Descendant view is generated. But it is clearly a bug, given that you can duplicate it via GEDCOM transfer. 3. If you cannot find your database file, its not an issue with RootsMagic. You might as well be posting on a Windows forum. Do you know the name of the file? Use Windows search, either via the entry form above Start on later versions or via Windows Explorer in all versions. Not remembering the name you could still search for all RootsMagic database file post-RM3 using the search term "*.rmgc", sans quotes. Good luck! Exactly how many people might be in the report? > OK, I also was wondering about that. Since my database includes my "personal" genealogy, which includes my Mother's ancestry, I figured the total number of descendants of Thomas would be considerably less than the total number of individuals in my entire database (31,572). So I generated a GEDCOM of all of Thomas' descendants and their spouses, and imported that in to another database, and the total is 17,594. Then, using this smaller database, I repeated the test of the Descendant List, and again got the same error. It seems to me that if the problem is in my data, it wouldn't be transferred to the new database via GEDCOM? I then generated a smaller database.... only 7 generations of descendants (and spouses) from Thomas. This totals 10215 individuals, and again get the error message. My computer is running win 7 Pro 64 bit with 8 GB RAM. The performance rating is 6.6 due to the processor with a 6.6 rating (dual core Intel). Performance rating for RAM and disk are 6.8 and 7.3 respectively. Also should mention I get the same error whether I'm running RM alone, or with several other aps open. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ Message board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir Mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hoffpauir.html DNA project: <http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir>

I can cause the error from two different means, but they both seem to be creating similar reports. From the main screen there are 6 tabs, Pedigree, Family, Descendants, People, etc. I choose descendants, then set the slider at 7, and go to either my "first" ancestor, or the son that has so many descendants, and the error occurs. Or, I can choose Reports-Lists-Descendant list and choose again either the eldest ancestor or his son, and generations in excess of 6, and get the problem. I first found the problem when using the second method and attempting to get a simple list without narrative for all the descendants of that "first" Hoffpauir. It's also interesting (to me at least) that I've always been able to generate a huge narrative report for the same ancestors, including all his descendants. I've been doing that for years with all versions for our annual family reunion. This year's copy of that report is posted on my web page, given in my sig., and it's over 600 pages long in it's simplest form (no sources or dates or locations included to save space).

    3. The program thinks you are in To-Go mode because the copy of RM you are running is not in the same folder you installed it in. When you install RM, the installer keeps track of the folder that the program was installed in (all installers do this). If you later hand move the files to a different folder, or change the name of your program folder, or for some other reason a different version of RootsMagic than the one you installed, RM will think it is running in To-Go mode. - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com On Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 10:47 PM, George W. I'll describe it here, but in reality, it won't affect the vast majority of users. It only occurs when I try to generate a 7 generation descendent list from my earliest ancestors, and only because one seems to have a huge number of descendents. If I try to create the same list from one of his sons (who has not so many descendents), it works fine, but if I try from the other son (The one with the huge number of descendents) I get the same exact error. Here's the message: Access violation at address 010213AB in module 'RootsMagic.exe'. Write of address 7EF9000A. The message is a windows error message, so it looks like windows thinks RM is doing something like trying to write twice to the same address. Anyway, it causes me to have to leave RM and restart it to clear the huge red box it places in RM. After trying what Renee suggested without any luck, I submitted a copy of my database to RM for them to look at the problem. I had already tried the database on my laptop to eliminate a computer problem, and was able to create the exact same error. Here's the last message I received from Renee: Renee RootsMagic Support * Good Morning, Development has you file. I have no time frame when they will get to it. It is best not to wait on them and instead drag n' drop your file into a new blank database so you can continue working. Sincerely, Renee RootsMagic, Inc. August 30, 2012 11:19 Of course, moving to a new database doesn't fix the problem, it just moves to the new database. If anyone knows what the Windows error message really means, I'd appreciate letting me know, off list if necessary. And I'd really like to know if anyone has a similar database with lots of descendents and can re-create the problem. My database isn't that large.... 31,572 people, 12, 464 families. But I'm tracking "all" the descendents of Thomas Hoffpauir, the family's earliest known ancestor, so descendent lists and reports get very large. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ Message board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir Mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hoffpauir.html DNA project: <http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir> =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message.
