    3. My apologies. You meant RootsWeb's Freepages service which is a web-hosting service; I was thinking of Worldconnect. I don't see why you cannot upload JavaScript files to it - they are client-side, not server-side scripts, meaning they execute within the user's browser, not on the server. I agree that in time Google and other search services will do a better job of searching javascript pages. It's in the mean time I worry about missing out on connections. I find for example that my html site on Free Webs comes up very high when I search for names of my ancestors. However my database on Wold Connect is much harder to find with a web search. Bruce did mention they were trying to come up with a way to fix the search options. Another thought the sites generated by TNG are also dynamic pages and I do find them coming up in web searches. So I think there would be a way to do this. :) Kim =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I think all 'versions' of RM are same (I always buy electronic download from RM US site - simple and very good value) *** If I am wrong, please correct me. If there is a UK version then does it just have other UK research info which is probably not needed ? Richard in READING UK *** minor problem - I cannot buy online because when come to pay the State box is empty because we are No State in previous page for tax purposes. I have downloaded trial and will ring States again because very busy - I am pleased to say - at the moment. On payment the Key unlocks the rest of the already downloaded file so you can access all reports etc. From: "Arthur & Pauline Kennedy" <kengen@paxnet.co.uk> > I'm currently using RootsMagic 5, UK version, and am planning to upgrade > to RM6 before too long. 3. I don't think you ever uploaded html files to RootsWeb; you uploaded a GEDCOM. You still can. Both the old and the new system generate a set of files comprising a website that you can upload to your own web hosting server. The new Publish Online provides an easy way to also upload the new website to RootsMagic's own web hosting service. In time, I daresay that search engines will be able to crawl through your PO website whether hosted by RootsMagic or some other service, especially if you make a link to it publicly available somewhere on the Internet. Maybe they will only get as far as the Home page, today, but, over time, I see no reason why they would not be able to execute Javascript and plough deeper. I just watched the webinar and love the new features, thanks Bruce!! I do have a few questions about the online publishing though. If I'm understanding this right, we can use this to save the files to our computer like we have done with the old html generator. I can then upload this to another site, say the free pages at RootsWeb and it would work ok right? But as I'm writing this, something is telling me that RootsWeb doesn't allow java script, so the pages might not work there? I really like the look of the new page layout and I love that you can include multiple photos AND everyone in your database! But with this dynamic style if the info is not able to be found in a web search that is a draw back for me. I've been using RM to generate web pages and have met many cousins through them finding my site in searches. This is one of my main reasons for putting the info online, so I hope a solution to this might happen soon. :) In the mean time thank you for leaving both options in! 3. I'm currently using RootsMagic 5, UK version, and am planning to upgrade to RM6 before too long. However, even after allowing for currency conversion charges it looks as though I would have to pay quite a bit more for the UK version than if I ordered from the US site. So, if I upgraded with the US version, would I lose any specifically UK features, and if so, what? Thanks for any help with this, Arthur

    3. I think, Tom, you're confusing RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project with Freepages. With the latter, one can indeed upload a pre-generated "website" and there is no restriction concerning use of javascript. The RM6-generated files work perfectly, Kim. > /From:/"Tom Holden" <ve3meo@gmail.com <mailto:ve3meo@gmail.com>> > /Subject:/Re: [RMagic] RM6 New Web pages? > /Date:/Tue, 20 Nov 2012 23:05:49 -0500 > /References:/<50AC503E.6040708@wightman.ca> > /In-Reply-To:/<50AC503E.6040708@wightman.ca> > > > I don't think you ever uploaded html files to RootsWeb; you uploaded a > GEDCOM. 3. Charlie sent me a subset of his file and I got the same sort of access violation error. I was able to stay in RM, though, getting out of the error message and able to reduce the Descendant View and use other Views. Descendant View, however, was corrupted, insofar as the border area around it gets filled to varying degrees with Red, varying with the number of generations parameter and, I think, with the number of generations actually shown. This large number of descendants stresses RM's report Previewer. Navigation to different pages of the Descendant List report was almost coffee break duration. Saving 221 pages to PDF certainly is; I'm still waiting... One CPU fully utilised - maybe it's hung? Exactly how many people might be in the report? > OK, I also was wondering about that. Since my database includes my "personal" genealogy, which includes my Mother's ancestry, I figured the total number of descendants of Thomas would be considerably less than the total number of individuals in my entire database (31,572). So I generated a GEDCOM of all of Thomas' descendants and their spouses, and imported that in to another database, and the total is 17,594. Then, using this smaller database, I repeated the test of the Descendant List, and again got the same error. It seems to me that if the problem is in my data, it wouldn't be transferred to the new database via GEDCOM? I then generated a smaller database.... only 7 generations of descendants (and spouses) from Thomas. This totals 10215 individuals, and again get the error message. My computer is running win 7 Pro 64 bit with 8 GB RAM. The performance rating is 6.6 due to the processor with a 6.6 rating (dual core Intel). Performance rating for RAM and disk are 6.8 and 7.3 respectively. Also should mention I get the same error whether I'm running RM alone, or with several other aps open. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ Message board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir Mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hoffpauir.html DNA project: <http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir> =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message. I don't think it matters how many are in the total file, since I've seen the effect with "portions" of my database. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ Message board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir Mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hoffpauir.html DNA project: <http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir>

If my data set is the only one that has the problem, I doubt that it will ever be looked into by the debuggers. And even though I doubt I'd use the Descendant list very much, it bothers me that I have to restart RM whenever I do try to use it.

As I mentioned earlier, it's probably a very "rare" database that will experience this. My database is kind of rare in that it's the entire Hoffpauir family (that is, those we can locate) that are descended from Thomas. And family members have been contributing to this information (first in self-published books and now via the internet) for over 50 years. (There have been 48 family reunions over the last 50 years, so many cousins have been interested in family history over that time.) The really curious thing about this error is that there are no problems whatever in generating a narrative report from the same data, for even more generations. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ Message board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir Mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hoffpauir.html DNA project: <http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir>

And I'd really like RM is accessing memory that it hasn't asked windows for permission to use, hence 'access violation'. It may just have run out of memory on your machine, period. Exactly how many people might be in the report? -- Regards Dave
