    3. Then there is the problem that Legacy outputs incorrect code for Cause of Death, causing other programs to import it as either Description for the death event or as a Note. We can't win Hugh. 1. Re: [RMagic] Export of "Name" Citations
    2. Tom Holden
    3. RM6 exports a citation that appears in the Person row of its Edit Person table at the same GEDCOM level as Name or any Event. Therefore it is not a Name citation but a citation for the Individual. For example: 0 @I252@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth Emily /Holden/ ... 1 SOUR @S1@ 1 REFN Groves261 ... There is no way to enter a citation for the Name, only for the Indi. You can add citations to Alternate Names. On import, citations against the primary Name are stored in the database against the Name but are not outputted to reports. They might, though, be re-exported to GEDCOM. You could verify that by bouncing a GEDCOM from Legacy to the free RM6 Essentials and back. I would recommend you explore for yourself. It might be possible with a scripting language with multiline regular expression search and replace capability to batch revise a GEDCOM so that such INDI citations become NAME citations. In fact, it might lend itself readily to a BASIC script. It's simply a matter of finding every "1 SOUR" line within a body of lines beginning "0 @I", changing the "1 SOUR" to "2 SOUR" and relocating them between the 1 NAME and the next line beginning with 1. I encountered the disappearance of Name citations on importing from Ancestry and Family Tree Maker and have reported that as a "bug". Using SQLite, I converted them to Person citations in the RM database. The reverse should also be possible so, if RM exports its hidden Name citations, one could maintain this particular GEDCOM compatibility in both directions by flipping between Person and Name citations within the RM database, using these complementary SQLite queries. 2. Connie Sheets
    3. The short answer is that citations entered in RootsMagic6 attached to the Person field end up in Legacy 7.5 attached to the Unspecified rather than Name field. I know because I just tried it. Why that happens I do not understand (or care to understand;-) The other problem you will have is that if you use source templates in either program (other than Free-Form in RootsMagic and Basic in Legacy), the citations will be garbled when transferred to the other program. I've found no loss of data, i.e. the citation elements transfer, but the citation "sentence" will print in a different sequence than one would hope for because of the limitations of GEDCOM. Connie

    1. [RMagic] FA place name database in the RM6 upgrade
    2. David E. Cann
    3. This is in no way a problem, just something that struck me as odd after all these years of using The RootsMagician's magnificent toys. I am referring to the place name database that installs with RM if you let it do so. I have just completed upgrading to RM 6 (and subsequently 6.0.0.2) in our three machines, two Dell desktops and a Dell laptop, all three of which run on Windows 7 if that matters with anything. All three upgrades worked without difficulty, but in one of the desktops it also installed (or at least it said it did) the Family Atlas place name database. Does that mean my wife has been running without it all of this time, or else an older copy of it? I try to keep all three of them current, but I suppose it is possible that I overlooked it at some point in the one machine. As I said, it is no big deal at this point, but it struck me as rather odd. David E. Cann decann@infionline.net or "david.e.cann" on Skype

    3. Greetings It may be worth asking RM in US what the difference is and who wrote the 'UK version'. (( I would have thought that Bruce or the webmaster would have commented by now - or perhaps I am not getting any of this thread of emails I will have to check if put in junk or spam folder. )) Just for the record I can do all those bullet point things * but see %%% and $$$ ref spelling. Perhaps someone can help me on that. In the version I bought from US You can set dates in any format you want so our way is an option - I use it (Tools prog options general) %%% There is an English dictionary ( where ? I know it exists . I wonder if I did not select when installing ? Is it the .adm file. can I access it from RM6 now ? ) . and you can set up your own dictionary as well. $$$ I must admit I have just done a spell check and it did not recognise programme or colour (you can add in yourself as OK ) It underlines things it does not recognise as you type in if you set as (Tools prog options general) I do not know what is meant by UK sources. You add sources yourself. eg 1841 census or birth cert etc. and can also select from a list when you add new and if UK slightly different, then they are available eg census UK. is available in my (US) version as a source BUT I make my own as well. It is easy. It is easy to go to any web site without going through RM and some UK are included also in RM. You do what you want to do in any case. Ancestry and fmp and WVR give same results wherever you live .co and .com are basically the same. I use either. When you click websearch in RM you can select a source from list or put own in. You will get a result or many results but not see details. eg I just clicked on web search for my grandfather and selected Ancestry click on Census and narrow in to UK 1911 and I get his name and birth year and residence (and many more similar) BUT unless you are subscriber you cannot see the original. (If you subscribe (as I do to all 3 ) The only difference is that you pay more to include US censuses etc in the world subscription (but you can get a lot free also)) Support from US via RMlist or contact direct Therefore works OK in UK (except spell ?) Richard UK Any more advice needed we are only too pleased to help wherever you bought from. > Thanks for all the opinions on the UK vs US version. > > I've now also asked the UK distributor what the points of difference > are, and they say that the UK-specific features include: > * UK spellcheck > * UK date formats > * UK sources > * links to UK websites in the WebSearch tab > They also offer free technical support. > > At the time of writing, I think I'm now inclined to go for the UK > version - though knowing me, I might change my mind a few more times... > > Arthur > > > > =================================== > RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS > WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: > http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ROOTSMAGIC-USERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I believe that UK spellcheck and date formats are inherent in the downloadable version. They are settings you choose and change to suit the way you want to work. I don't know what is meant by UK sources; there are some source templates for UK sources in the standard version. As for links to UK websites, you can add whatever ones you want; that said, the results from a .co.uk website may be no different from those from its sister .com website, if it has one, e.g., Ancestry and FindMyPast. I've now also asked the UK distributor what the points of difference are, and they say that the UK-specific features include: * UK spellcheck * UK date formats * UK sources * links to UK websites in the WebSearch tab They also offer free technical support. At the time of writing, I think I'm now inclined to go for the UK version - though knowing me, I might change my mind a few more times... Arthur
