But I haven't discovered how to do it yet and would appreciate an answer. I had despaired of ever getting my place list cleaned up, but separating the place details and then merging the places works so easily and quickly. To convert the citations to the INDI level to citations for the primary NAME in the GEDCOM can be done with a regular expression search and replace tool capable of handling multi-line patterns. My PSPad text editor is not capable of that. I have used, in the past, the very powerful EcoByte Replace Text program; while it would probably do the job, it is no longer supported and purportedly has some issues with some Windows 7 installations. It is still available and free at http://www.ecobyte.com/replacetext/ . I could help with the expressions although I am very rusty. Alternatively, it appears that a SQLite query could convert or copy all of the Person citations to the Primary Name citation. Although invisible to the RM user interface except for the Source List report, they do export to GEDCOM as sources for the first NAME tag. Subsequent NAME tags are all Alternate Names. For me, that is easier than the text search and replace; SQLiteSpy is my go-to tool to address things I cannot do within RM. Explore http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/ to see if it's for you. The reverse process is also needed for imports from Ancestry, Family Tree Maker and, apparently Legacy Family Tree: i.e., convert primary Name citations to citations of the Person. Why these basic differences exist is beyond me. I hope that the RootsMagician could find a way to be able to support bidirectional transparency for Person and Name citations between RootsMagic and these others. Until then..., losses or workarounds. Tom -----Original Message----- From: J. So I'm trying to figure out what we are doing differently. Here'a a question, when you say that you click on a county name in the Place List and have 5 cemetery names, what's the problem? That's the way it's supposed to work. Or are you saying that you get duplicate cemetery names? If so, then you need to merge them in the same basic way that you merged the counties. Jerry

Absolutely correct, and the reason the tag is called INDI is because that's a four letter abbreviation for INDIvidual. Jerry

Hugh, I'm just a novice here, although I have been researching for over 30 years and using multiple softwares in those 30 years, finally finding Family Origins, and now RootsMagic. I don't have anything to add that will help you, but I am puzzled as to why you move your database between RM and Legacy? I believe I tried Legacy once, years ago, but didn't stick with it for some reason or another. What is your purpose for moving your database between the two softwares? What does Legacy give you that RM does not? Brenda ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. It's not that NAME is INDI in RootsMagic. Both are valid tags in GEDCOM. INDI is the base tag for every new person and carries the RIN: 0 @I7@ INDI - this starts the block of data about a person with RIN 17. NAME is subsidiary to INDI; it's a property of the person, so it's on a lower level: 1 NAME William Henry /Cotterill/ - level 1 is below level 0; every GEDCOM statement from the above level 0 down to the next level 0 pertain to the entity defined by the 1st 0. 2 SOUR @S11@ - level 2 pertains to the last level 1 statement above it. So this citation is against the NAME 3 PAGE Class: RG12; Piece: 2764; Folio 86; Page 7; GSU roll: 6097874. 3 DATA 4 TEXT Birth date: abt 1850Birth place: Brampton, Derbyshire, 5 CONC EnglandResidence date: 1891Residence place: Brampton, Derbyshire, 5 CONC England 1 SOUR @S1@ - but this citation is at the same level as NAME and is subsidiary to INDI at level 0 so it is a Person citation, not a NAME citation. A minor bug in Timeline view - while editing a fact, Ctrl-C causes the 'color coding' dialogue to appear rather than the desired copy function. Ctrl-V is non-functional. Ctrl-A causes the 'fact types' dialogue to appear. Ctrl-X works as expected. Family view is fine. On a different subject - how does one add a button to the main tool bar? I go to 'add or remove buttons', then 'customise', then select the toolbar. So far, so good. Then I select the commands tab, and the 'search/search everywhere. I'd like to add this button to the main toolbar, but can't see any way to do it. Double-clicking it does nothing. Surely, there should be an 'add this command' button somewhere? -- Regards Dave
I split off the cemetery names and put them in the details of the county. Later when I was doing a clean up of names, I noticed that I had several instances of the county name so - not thinking, I merged those county names. I ended up with 5 different cemeteries with the details of the county. When I click on the county name in the place list, those 5 cemetery names show in the detail section. When I click on the cemetery and do a "print," it shows everyone in that county with no reference to cemeteries. I think (not sure) that the burial place is still in the person's burial information but I can't print out all who were buried in that cemetery. I stopped splitting out the cemeteries as soon as I realized what I was doing. Betty
