Thanks for the tip, Kim. I find it really interesting that they work directly on the database of the different softwares. I see that Geni.com is in beta test but no sync yet with any other online tree. Interestingly, the mailing address is shared by http://www.sharingtime.com which does work with New Family Search but AncestorSync may be awaiting the stabilization of Family Search Family Tree, just as RootsMagic is. I just signed up for beta testing... I was wondering if anyone has used AncestorSync? http://ancestorsync.com/ I stumbled onto their website tonight after looking for ideas to sync databases. Their website seems to show that it can sync your RootsMagic database and convert it into other formats. I've also read on many genealogy blogs that it was allowing users to sync to Geni.com, new Family Search and a few others. Normally to update my Ancestry.com tree I export my RM gedcom then import and merge it into FTM 2012 and then sync it online. Something like this might make this process a bit simpler... Although it shows it works with FTM 2011, not 2012 yet. I'm curious if anyone using RM has tried this out? How did you find it handled converting facts, notes etc? Anyone tried it with shared facts? Kim
I have figured out the unlock problem. I searched my RM mail folder and found I did receive a new registration key which somehow went into the folder unread. I guess I was thinking Upgrade rather than new program so wasn't expecting it and didn't miss it. Thanks for the hint that triggered me to search for it. But before I go ahead I have another question. Since I want to keep RM5 as a separate file, How do I do that? I always see the option for keeping an older program during the installation process, but when I go to browse I see no place (in the choices) to put it that makes sense to me. I know my age is slowing me down and don't really understand file associations and folders. Do I need to uninstall RM6, download RM5 again with it's key, and if I do, will it still have my data base in it? Then when I install RM6 again, set up RM6 so it will not convert the RM5 files? Or the reverse, leave the 6 (which has already over written 5) installed and then re-install 5 with data base intact? And will it let me do that? I am probably making this more complicated than is necessary, but I'd really like to get it right this time. Thanks again for the help. I have a One-Name Study (PIMBLE / PYMBLE) and have a TNG website. I have selected the people I want to appear on the TNG website using the RM Group facility. I then use this group to auto-select the people when I create a GEDCOM to upload to my TNG website. I want to be able to upload those same people to the RM site, when I gain access, but am not sure if groups are a selection criteria. They appear not to be to me or have I missed something? Gerald
Bruce, I think that this is for you. When I did my install, I opted to leave the RM5 install available, just in case. I had noticed that my backup file was being named with a 5 rather than a 6 and changed it. However I just was looking at the files and see that I do not have an Rootsmagic6 folder. I recall that someone just recently had a problem doing a new install as he had either moved or renamed his folder. What do I need to do now to make this straight? Can I just rename my database in explorer and leave it in Rootsmagic 5? I would rather have a Rootsmagic 6 folder. What do you suggest? thanks, Jinny Angelis
It is usually not wise to just rename a program files folder... in RootsMagic's case it will make it so you can't automatically check for updates. You can uninstall RM6 and then reinstall it to the folder name you want. - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com On Mon, Dec 3, 2012 at 8:55 AM, Jinny Angelis <jinnya@msn.com> wrote: > > Bruce, I think that this is for you. > When I did my install, I opted to leave the RM5 install available, just in case. There is an option to get the book that is offered when you are doing the RM6 download purchase. It then changed to a download with the CD coming later and a $5 discount on the book which is supposed to be available mid Dec. You do have to pay shipping which was 5, but you then have the book and the CD which is always nice. Very easy. I did notice that the back up came up with an RM5 in the name rather than RM6 so I just changed it. Small problem, easily fixed on the user end. I have not got into the new things but did notice that the narrative reports seemed to handle dates and notes a little better than before. Barbara, RM6 is an entirely new program, You cannot. use your RM5 license unlock key to unlock RM6. You will need to purchase a new license in order to use all of the features of RootsMagic 6. No problems on my XP machine with either Opera (latest version) or IE7. May be something to do with IE8, or some setting or corruption on your machine. You should probably contact Tech Support tomorrow. Did you not receive an email following your purchase of the upgrade with a new registration key for RM6? The rmgb file type does not automatically open RM even when RM is installed and RM also does not "Open" it. It "Restores" a rmgc file from a rmgb file and opens the rmgc file. Since you have not opened anything with your RM6 program, you can download and reinstall RM5 with your old key, if you need to carry on for a while until you get RM6 sorted out. Next time you install RM6, you can choose the option to keep RM5 so that you can play around with 6 before migrating. Remember, though, that any database you Open with RM6 gets modified and cannot be opened thereafter by RM5. Your RM5 backups remain unchanged. Sorry if my answer raised a concern. The Publish Online tool creates a local 'website', i.e., the files and folder structure that you can upload to the site of your choosing, using means outside the RM tool. Publish Online itself can upload only to My.RootsMagic.com. Could someone share their online website using the RM6 Online Publish feature that was uploaded to another domain other than Myrootsmagic.com, using the HTML file? I have viewed the sample and a few others that were uploaded and shared with us at myrootsmagic.com and they look really great.
