    3. You could edit the GEDCOM and change the line near the beginning from 5.5.1 to 5.5 and resave the GEDCOM. Then FTM will think it is new enough. ;-) - Bruce http://www.rootsmagic.com On Thu, Dec 6, 2012 at 5:04 PM, David E. Cann <decann@infionline.net> wrote: > Huh? You're kidding. 1. Re: [RMagic] Legal guardian fact?
    2. Tom Holden
    3. Any fact can have its sentence customised at the individual without changing the default or master sentence so I'm guessing your main concern is the label displayed on Individual Summary and Family Group Sheet. Then maybe it makes sense to create a custom fact so that the fact name is more meaningful than Miscellaneous and more appropriate than Adoption. Maybe "Orphaned" for the children. Since the guardian family was unrelated, will they even be persons in the database? The Orphaned fact can be shared with a person not in the database or you can simply incorporate their names in the Description so they come out in the Summary and FGS. For each ward you could use the date range covering the period from the start of guardianship to the date the ward reached the age of majority. For the legal guardian, the end date could be the date of release of the youngest ward and the sentence could be [person] acted as the legal guardian of the children of so and so [Date]. You might try a shared fact but I'm not sure which way to go on this. If the guardian is the principal role, then only the start date is common to all the wards. If the ward is principal, and each ward gets his own fact and shares it with the guardian, then the guardian ends up with multiple shared facts but the date ranges work. Perhaps the first makes sense and add an individual fact to each ward that has to do with what he did when he came out from under guardianship. Tom -----Original Message----- From: David E. 3. I'm sorry Yvonne, I didn't know they were currently charging for something I read was in Beta testing. Nothing I've read online so far had suggested that. I assumed that when it came OUT of beta testing they would likely have a fee of some kind or a lower free vr more optioned paid version. Since I still haven't received a download link or code of any kind I haven't tried it out yet. But from what I've read online, and I can't say how accurate this is, that what they are trying to do is have the program read the fact RM creates and convert it directly into the format another program creates with out mangling the data in anyway. And then if you made changes in another program, it would convert that directly back into RM format. Also to be able to update your online trees from one file. They also want to offer a way for people to share a database in a group so everyone can work on it at the same time. It sounds interesting to me, although I don't think I would use this with anything but a backup copy of my data. 3. Sorry for not reply sooner. I applied to be a beta tester as well. I haven't received a tester code yet. But the same day I applied I sent their support an email. I was interested in if they would soon support RM 6 and if it handled the shared facts. Their reply was that they are working on supporting RM 6 and hope to have that done in about 3 weeks. AncestorSync does not yet support RM shared facts, but this is something they are going to work on. They said they would send me a tester code, but I have not received it yet. They also suggested that as this is in testing to use a copy of your file and not your master database. Of course! :) I'm looking forward to trying this out. It would be nice to have a way to keep my files in multiple genealogy programs up to date. However the largest benefit to me would be if they were able to get something that properly converted shared facts to individual facts. Although, I'm still hoping for this as a native RM feature. :-D Kim On 12/05/2012 08:27 PM, Tom Holden wrote: > Of the $15/yr, I am not aware for AncestorSync. 3. I thought AncestorSync was free because I did not see a price on their website. After I downloaded the program they sent me an email with a link to confirm my email address. After clicking the link I saw they wanted me to pay $35/yr. So I emailed them and told them I was deleting the program and would not pay since there is nothing about $35/yr on their website. I told them I'd be glad to be a beta testor and they sent me the code to put in. They said it would enable me to test the software for 3 months. They recommend you use a copy of your database for testing and said: "AncestorSync will work with RootsMagic 4 and 5 and we are in the process of updating it to work with RootsMagic 6 files. If you are using RootsMagic 6 already, please check back with us in about 3 weeks to see if we have it ready for testing with RM 6. 1. Re: [RMagic] Legal guardian fact?

    3. David, I am only familiar with that incident in Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. That would occur when the head of the household would send the child to live with a particular person who would board them, care for them, and develop their skills for certain types of work; i.e., cobbler, weaver, caretaker, painter, etc. The instrument will sometimes contain all of the specifications; others are just in general terms. It will also contain information and conditions for the completion of the guardianship. This also occurs when both parents or one of the parents dies early in the life of a child. Usually, there are no family members close by, or, doesn't want to accept the responsibilities. I know of one case where a child had a guardian for the younger years and then, transferred to another person who would see that they had skills in the areas where the child could be responsible and care for himself; become employed; and start a family. My maternal 2nd grate grandfather was placed out with a harness maker and cobbler in one state. Next he showed up in North Carolina where he spent several years working as an intern in other skills before moving to Hiseville District, Barren County, KY where he worked in both skills. Then he immigrated to Perry County, Missouri and worked there until his death. This happened frequently in olden times clear back to BC. The skills acquired were metal workers, artisans for jewelry, weaving, making archery and later guns. Just let you imagination run wild and it would probably have guardianships or internships in its history. Sometimes is covered events where the guardianship was punishment for civil deeds or debts. Hope this might give you an idea where to search for other information to accompany this new fact. Good luck with your research. As long as I have been using this software I never thought I would be saying this, but how do I enter a legal guardian for someone? I have never run into this before. The guardian did not adopt them (6 siblings), so adoption doesn't appear to be the right choice of fact, but what is? I am thinking about using the generic "Miscellaneous" fact, but I don't really care for that, either. David E.
