Thanks , Tom! I knew the HTML code could be changed to move the picture, but had no clue how to do it. Never heard of PSPad, but checked it out and see it is freeware. I will follow your instructions. Maybe this is something Bruce will fix, or at least give an option of placement, if that is possible. Your help is appreciated! Thank you all for your help. I followed all suggestions with no effect. However, by accident I think I've discovered the problem, but am not techie enough to understand it. When I opened RM from the shortcut on my toolbar I got the error 26 message. When I opened RM from the original icon on my desktop I had no error message. So... deleted the toolbar shortcut and will use the desktop one. Hopefully, that is the end of the problem. My thanks to Laura and Jesse for responding to my question about the picture placement on the home page of websites created to publish online in RootsMagic 6. I guess for now, there is no choice and I must settle for my picture being at the bottom of any text I add under my heading. This isn't a huge problem, just a preference, as I think the home page looks better with the picture at the top - the way it is in the website I created with RootsMagic 5. I will just have to shorten my introduction or figure out another place to put it. I love this new way of creating websites, as well as the privacy of uploading them to my.rootsmagic.com. I also love the new ipad app - and it is free! Thank you, Bruce for great software. RootsMagic is the best! Yvonne Scott

I have been a database programmer for many years. The problem associated with the display order of like items is common in all systems based on a database, ie NOT specific to RM. When data is selected from the various database tables it is done so randomly (by default) - not even in data entered order AND not always in the same order - unless there is also an explicit sort request. Then the problem only occurs when there are like items based on the sort request, ie two dates the same. Hence the need for an additional sort item in RM - the Sort Date. Whilst this discussion has centred around BMD events it is also an issue for any event type where there are multiple events on the same date, ie census, residence & occupation. Unless explicit sort dates are used these three events will occur in random order every time they are displayed. I see no relationship between the order in which the birth and death items are entered and which event is displayed first in the edit person window. No matter which I enter first, Death seems to float to the top every time as long as they have the same dates. I know, I can enter the sort date and it is no problem for me, but I think you are mistaken about the first entered being listed first. Well said Laurie about how simple the logic might be. Remember though that the test must be applied to ALL of the facts to find Birth, Death, Burial first. As a former software designer and programmer, I wonder what the timing impact might be... I've adjusted to using the sort date because I would rather have the program run a little faster. Thank you for saying that, Arild. I have refrained from adding anything to this discussion because it has been discussed off and on in the past with no success. About 3 years ago I gave up on trying to get this simple change made. Although I don't have many people who have the same birth, death, and burial date, I do have many for whom I only have the year or the month and year of death. When I know their place of burial, I add the Burial fact for these people, but RM ALWAYS puts the Burial fact before the Death fact. This is SO frustrating. As other users have said, other programs do this automatically. I love RM. I've been using it for years, since Family Origins 6 or 8, and I'm not going to change now. BUT every time I see this transposition of the normal order of facts, it makes me angry to have to use Sort dates. If people like using Sort dates, then so be it. They can use them. Many of us don't like being forced to use them when it would be so simple for the program to do this automatically. I'm a retired software tech writer and I only know a little about programming. But it seems to me that it should be simple enough to write code that says something like: IF death and burial date equal > THEN death fact goes first IF birth, death, and burial date equal > THEN birth fact goes first and death fact goes next I know this isn't the correct way to write the code, but I suspect it's close and could be accomplished in a few minutes. Then everyone should be happy--even those who say they ALWAYS use Sort dates and love taking the time to do it. Those who say they rarely need this don't speak for the rest of us--including those who might be out of town, busy with visitors at their house, or just reluctant to add their voice to the discussion. Laurie Nelson P.S. This is one of the few times Bruce hasn't listened to a request for a minor change. Those who complain about him should think about how many software developers would be answering users on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as Bruce did. I really appreciate the way he usually makes changes requested by users. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Arild Kompelien" <akom@broadpark.no> Sent: Thursday, December 27, 2012 3:50 PM To: <rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [RMagic] RootsMagic 6 - sorting of birth, death and burial events when all occur in the same year > So far sort order has worked for me, but I don't see why I should > disagree with Tom. I find the discussion about sorting fine and interesting. And the participants have mostly kept to the point during the discussion. That is seldom on the internet. But the remarks here - that it is boring, is a kind of spam. If I find a discussion boring I don't have to tell "all the world" that I find it boring - I just delete the boring mails.
