    3. 2TB is the max database size. 3. Thank you, Linda, for your thoughtful response to the question I raised. I've given this some more thought, and I think there are a number of separate issues - though behind the scenes there may be some connections. 1. Free Form sources (This is my preferred source type, and I understand that others prefer them because they transfer more reliably to other programs.) There doesn't seem to be any way at present of incorporating privacy options in free form sources, either with the privacy switch that can be used in source templates, or with the {curly brackets} that can be used in notes fields. 2. Using a source template and including a privacy switch such as <![Public]|[Private]> seems to work in RM reports, but it is not without its problems: 3. GEDCOM output When a source template includes a privacy switch, the source name, which is taken from RM's Footnote, is corrupted in the GEDCOM output (see the TITL tag). Everything between and including the ! and the | is apparently removed, so that, for example, out of what appears in RM as <![Public]|[Private]>, what goes into the TITL tag is whatever has been entered in the [Private] field. There doesn't seem to be any way of showing the [Public] field instead (or as well). This may give the appearance of having been privatised, but if you open the GEDCOM with a text editor and look at the source (a section beginning with the line "0 @Sxxx@ SOUR" where xxx is that source's unique number) you can see that this is not the case: (a) The line beginning "1 ABBR" shows the name you gave the source in RM (the one that appears in the pick list), which may be identifiable. (b) There will also be a section with lines something like: 1 _TMPLT 2 TID 10000 2 FIELD 3 NAME Public 3 VALUE yyy where yyy is the contents of the [Public] field that would appear in a RM report with the source privacy option switched off. In other words, any source that is exported to a GEDCOM will include all its fields, both public and private, even though in some places it may appear that it includes only the privatised version. 4. RM's Master Source List When a source includes a privacy switch, what appears here in the footnote field seems to be the same as in the GEDCOM TITL tag, ie [Private] field only. To see the [Public] field you need to click Edit. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but I find it a little annoying. To sum up, I do still feel it should easier to make sources private within RM, including free form ones, and having a Public/Private switch on each one would make it possible to select which sources to privatise on a case-by-case basis, rather than the current all or nothing approach. Alfred's suggestion, which I misunderstood and he has now explained to me, was to have public and private versions of the same fact, with one showing and one hiding the private sources. This ought to work, but it might involve quite a lot of work to add the extra facts. Putting details of private sources in {privacy brackets} in fact notes would also work, but again it might need a lot of user input, and the sources would no longer appear in the source list. However, now that I've looked at this again, I think the most urgent issue might be to enable source privacy in GEDCOM exports - though I can see that this might be a by-product of a wider implementation. Living people who appear in a file as individuals can be privatised, but if they happen to be sources as well, their names will appear regardless. 1. Re: [RMagic] Can I make a source private?

    3. Thank you for your replies, Alfred. Your original thought: > Add fact, make it Private and attach the source you want to keep > private ONLY to those facts you have marked as private. wouldn't always work - sometimes it's only the source that I'd want to keep private, not the fact itself; and it wouldn't work with person sources. However, in view of the difficulties I'm about to describe, you've made me wonder if one workaround would be to define a fact "Private Information", which is never shared, and use that to include anything sensitive - or just put private sources in privacy brackets in the notes for the existing fact. Anyway, I've now tried something on the lines of what you suggest below. I've created a source template named !Private Individual, with footnote templates (full and short) of <![Name]|<i>Name withheld</i>><, [Details]>. The bibliography is the same but without the Details bit. This seems to work in reports in the way I'm looking for, but as this is an area I've never explored before, I have a few further questions: (a) In the source template, does it matter whether I define the type of the [Name] field as Name or Text? It doesn't seem to make any difference to the output. (b) Since existing free form sources can't simply be changed into template-based sources, if I decided to use this new template to make duplicates of all my potentially private personal sources, would I then be able to merge the old and new versions to get the desired effect? However, I've noticed a couple of things which make me unsure whether this is a path I want to go down: (c) When I use this template to create a new source, in the source list the Footnote/Bibliography panel shows "Name withheld" (in italics) rather than the name of the person concerned. Is there anything I can do to get the non-privatised name to show up there? (Including a [SourceName] field as Alfred suggested didn't seem to make it happen.) (d) I wonder if (c) might be connected with the way a source of this type is exported to GEDCOM. This is the section of a GEDCOM file where the new source is defined: 0 @S382@ SOUR 1 ABBR MMK2 1 TITL <I>Name withheld</i>. 1 _SUBQ <I>Name withheld</i>. 1 _BIBL <I>Name withheld</i>. 1 _TMPLT 2 TID 10000 2 FIELD 3 NAME Name 3 VALUE M------- K------ [full name edited out for this message] (There's also a section beginning 0 _STMPLT 1 TID 10000 1 NAME !Private Individual where the source template is defined.) What concerns me is whether other programs will interpret this correctly. I don't have any RM-equivalent programs to try it with, but I've found that GENViewer (a read-only utility) reads the source name as "<I>Name withheld</i>", and the non-privatised name (as in the line 3 VALUE) doesn't appear at all. This seems to me to be a deal-breaker. Interestingly, I tried swapping the parts of the Name field in the template, ie <!<i>Name withheld</i>|[Name]> and that seemed to deal with the issues at (c) and (d). Then to produce a report in the way I wanted it, I had to use the source privacy switch in the opposite way to what is indicated. (Or have I stumbled upon a bug?) I'd be grateful for any comments on these points. As this is a new area for me, I realise that I could be misunderstanding things, so any clarification would be appreciated. Many thanks, Arthur On 02/01/2013 00:28, Alfred wrote: > You almost have to use a template for the template language structures > to work. > > Go to the Lists - Source templates and find a template similar to what > you want and copy it, I think that starting with "Personal Knowledge" > should work. > You can only edit copies of the built in source templates. > I would call it something like PRIVATE CONTRIBUTOR or something to > indicate what it is. > > Limit the fields to" > Source name, > Contributor (or Name as it is there) Details (Check the little box > for This is a source detail field) > > that's all you need > > In the footnote template add something like: > [Source name], <![Contributor]|Contributor wishes to remain > anonymous>, [Details]. > > Short footnote would be something like: > [Source name], [Details] > > and the bibliography just: > [Source name], <![Contributor]|Contributor wishes to remain anonymous> > > This seems to keep the contributor's name out of the footnote for me. > You would have to enter a different source name for each contributor > so the short footnotes would be for the correct source. > > > Alfred > ============ > > Arthur & Pauline Kennedy wrote: >> When people share information with me I include them in my RM file as >> master sources, and put brief details of our correspondence in the >> citations. 3. When people share information with me I include them in my RM file as master sources, and put brief details of our correspondence in the citations. This means that the names at least get listed in the footnotes to reports, but it has occurred to me that there might be times when I want to suppress the names but indicate that I could supply them if appropriate. In the Help file I've found reference to a privacy switch for sources: it seemed to say I could have two versions of the source name (eg "John Smith" and "Private correspondent - contact me for details") and in the report options set which one I wished to use. However, I can't get it to work (using RM6), so I'm not sure if I've misunderstood this or am doing it wrong, or if it's not working properly. In case it's relevant, all my sources are free form (and I don't intend to change that), and the reports I produce are almost always Family Group Sheets or Individual Summaries. Is there anyone who uses this feature who could give me a bit of help, please? Thank you, Arthur

    3. You almost have to use a template for the template language structures to work. Go to the Lists - Source templates and find a template similar to what you want and copy it, I think that starting with "Personal Knowledge" should work. You can only edit copies of the built in source templates. I would call it something like PRIVATE CONTRIBUTOR or something to indicate what it is. Limit the fields to" Source name, Contributor (or Name as it is there) Details (Check the little box for This is a source detail field) that's all you need In the footnote template add something like: [Source name], <![Contributor]|Contributor wishes to remain anonymous>, [Details]. Short footnote would be something like: [Source name], [Details] and the bibliography just: [Source name], <![Contributor]|Contributor wishes to remain anonymous> This seems to keep the contributor's name out of the footnote for me. You would have to enter a different source name for each contributor so the short footnotes would be for the correct source. 1. Re: [RMagic] RootsMagic 6 - sorting of birth, death and burial events when all occur in the same year
    2. Tom Holden
    3. Bruce asked questions about my SQLite3 scripts which Jerry answered very well but not completely accurately nor from first principles. The SortDate field in the EventTable of the database contains a number that looks nothing at all like a date. Today's date is represented by 6762593562815102988; a blank date by 9223372036854775807. The Sort date: field that we see in the Edit Person screen interprets between the stored number and the date format string that we see or enter. The numerical encoding of dates is very efficient because no decoding is required for sorting; the extra system effort is incurred only at time of data entry and display, i.e., one at a time. Indeed, the numerical encoding used is very clever as it allows for many variations of dates with varying precision (to the year, to the month, to the day), various modifiers (about, after, before,...) and date ranges. The suffix numbers allow for 4999 different values that sort earlier than the nominal date but after the day before. The nominal date could be regarded as date-5000; date-0 is equivalent and both are displayed as just date. I wrote these scripts with a poorer understanding of the encoding/decoding algorithms than I have now, thanks to the insights of Steve Turley: see http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/Dates%3E+SortDate+Algorithm . I intend to revise them to handle modified and range dates. Currently, the favoured script is SortDateSameDayOrderCustom.sql at http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/Dates+-+Same+Day+Sort+Order ; the first script was superseded and shown only to gain insight into the second, more complex one. The scripts were intended to solve problems that bothered some people with minimal impact on their database so the current one only modified SortDate values when there was a match with another event in the 'natural' list. But it demonstrates a principal that could be applied at time of data entry and import instead of after the fact: the assignment of the unique offsets to preclude potentially many instances of objectionable disorder. There are many reports and screens that currently rely on the SortDate values for order and these need not be revised to support some additional tie-breaking mechanism. There are only two areas I can think of that would be revised to assign the SortDate offsets: data entry and data import. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > How does it handle a birth and death where neither has a date (and > therefore no sort dates). Exactly the same as if they were dated. The stored SortDate is numbered and receives the same offsets but no value is displayed. The user cannot and need not enter a date string that produces the same SortDate value but would put in some valid date as he must do now if it was necessary to place the events in some logical order in the context of other dated events. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > How does it handle a situation like this? > Married 1800 > Born (no date) > Died (no date) The script does not modify the SortDate values of family events but the principal can be applied just the same. The principal does not change the order of events with different dates. If the RM output before the principal is applied was M.1800, D.____, B.____, then the order after would be M.1800, B.____, D.____. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Not asked, but how does it handle a situation like this? Born 1900 Died 1900 Because the sort dates are equal, the current script changes the sort date for the birth fact to 1900-20 and the sort date for the death fact to 1900-70. If the program were revised as I have suggested, these would be the automatically generated sort dates, regardless of any other event on the same date, thus inherently providing a natural sort order. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Not asked, but how does it handle a situation like this? Born 1900 Died 1910 Because there are no sort dates that are equal, the script does not change the sort dates. With the software revision I have proposed, the sort dates would be 1900-20 and 1910-70 , respectively. Tom

    1. [RMagic] Shareable CD--unable to copy and paste into title and contact pages
    2. Bruce C. Lyon
    3. Since upgrading to version 6, I am unable to paste text from the Windows clipboard to fill out the title and contact pages for the shareable CD. In a perfect world, RootsMagic would preserve this info so that I don't have to enter it each time I create a shareable CD, so copying and pasting was the alternative. But now that seems to have gone away. Any recommendations will be welcomed. If it matters, I'm running Windows 7, as I was before the RM upgrade. Thanks. Bruce C.
