I had two master sources (freeform) called "Cemetery Records" and unwittingly caused a problem when I merged them. One has "Rootsweb" as the repository (from years ago). After merging the two, I tried to delete "Rootsweb" but I can't find any way to edit or delete the repository. Is there any way? This affects over 3,000 sources, most of which will be wrong. TIA. Would someone explain to me how to enter adoptees into families in my RootsMagic 5 database when I have no information on their biological parents. Thanks. Tom Howle
Assuming you are adding an adopted child to parents you already have in your database: Add child as you regularly would. After he/she is added, open the adopted child's Edit Person screen. Highlight the two parents. On the right side, change the "Relationship to father" from "Birth" to "Adopted." Do same with mother. If you want to track both the birth parents and the adoptive parents, you can add a second set of parents. I think the answer to your last question - attaching documents to sources - depends on how you define the Source. Is it the Birth Certificate? In which case the document would be attached to the Source (and consequently available to all Facts that use that Source). This of course results in a lot more sources. Or is it the Provider of the Birth Certificate (ie there are multiple certificates from the one source, such as the GRO in England)? In which case the document would be attached to those Facts which are using a specific certificate as a source. I use the latter method. I have heard that others use the former method. I'm not sure whether there is a 'right' or 'wrong' way of doing this - genealogically speaking. If you are using the former method and you have either originals or photocopies of original certificates, the 'provider' source will usually be part of the certificate. It sounds like the notes window is simply not the "focus" window because it's underneath other windows. I don't know why it would be losing focus as soon as it opens but that would explain why it appears the program has stopped responding. You assume the program has stopped responding and use Task Manager to end it, not "open" it. If it's just a focus issue, it's not failing to respond, it's waiting for you to do something in the window you opened, but which is not in focus. Have you simply tried ALT-Tab or CTRL-Tab to bring the notes window to the front? On 1/7/13 8:50 PM, Arthur Dirks wrote: > I may have posted on this before, but I'm still hoping to solve my issue. I may have posted on this before, but I'm still hoping to solve my issue. I often have to force RM subwindows - mostly Note windows - to open with task manager. I haven't seen it listed elsewhere so I have to assume it's a problem in my environment. It was a problem with RM-5 and persists in RM-6. The Note subscreen/window blinks as if trying to open but drops behind other screens and the program stops responding perhaps 60-80% of instances. When I force RM to respond (ctrl-alt-del), the Notes subscreen seems to come from behind other RM windows and proceeds normally. I've disabled most of my seemingly-unnecessary start-ups. I usually have a browser, file manager and a text editor open with RM, but they're presence or not seems unrelated. I'm running Win7-64bit on an Asus P8z68 board with 8 gb of memory and an i5 2.67Ghz . I did not have this problem on my old Gigabyte AMD 32 bit WinXP. I have a hefty application list but this is the only problem of this nature. I'm wondering if others have confronted this or have most-likely-culprit suggestions. I can deal, but it's very annoying. Thanks for any help. Arthur Dirks adirks@dirksdesigns.com
A longshot that I think you would have noticed in other places, but check to make sure you do not have the "Hover" feature enabled in your mouse settings. This would have the effect of having a larger window that contained the mouse pointer automatically gaining focus over what should be the active window. Neat when it works correctly, but it can be equally frustrating. *Control Panel> Ease of Access> Change How Your Mouse Works* scroll down, UNcheck box/"Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse/" > /From:/"Arthur Dirks" <adirks@dirksdesigns.com <mailto:adirks@dirksdesigns.com>> > /Subject:/[RMagic] Arthur Dirks > /Date:/Mon, 7 Jan 2013 21:50:54 -0500 > > > I may have posted on this before, but I'm still hoping to solve my issue. The busy discussion under the topic "RootsMagic 6 - sorting of birth, death and burial events when all occur in the same year" failed to highlight the fact that RootsMagic 6 does not even have a tool with which one can readily find these out-of-natural-order events when they are dated the same or not at all. So even those users who think that having control over the Sort date is all they need are faced with having to detect such disturbing sequences by laborious, manual inspection followed by even more laborious, manual editing of the Sort date. To get a picture of the size of the problem, I developed a SQLite script that does not modify your data but does report many kinds of 'unnatural' sequences that could be jarring in the Edit Person or RM Explorer screens or in the Timeline View and may make a disturbing sequence of events and sentences in reports. It's found at http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/Facts+-+Sort+Order+Problems and is experimental and not optimised for speed. Remarkable discussion for a big holiday ;-) My SQLite script works only on selected events having the same date. If memory serves, that may include undated events. It does not address your example, Bruce, of undated birth and death relative to a dated marriage. Perhaps one could address those cases but is it not preferable that the user input, at the least, estimated dates for birth and death? That helps to narrow the results of searches on databases and is almost essential to the analysis of potentially relevant data, e.g., the TimeLine View. I think SortDate is a great feature for controlling the order of facts but it is also underutilized by users and the program could exploit it more than it does. Cheers! You might be able to reduce that number a bit by going to the tools menu and choosing the Set living item. Set living to false for a selected group of people and choose: Any fact -- date -- is before -- 1900 ( or sometime like that.) Alfred ========== Myrna wrote: > Drew: > Thank you for the information. You can create a Group for that cemetery. Burial place contains [place name] AND Burial place details contain [cemetery name] Save the Group. Edit the Group and put the same criteria in Find. Click on Next to go to the next person. Unmark the person's who do not have the same dates. Select that Group to show in the Sidebar. Put the main view on Timeline. Highlight each person in turn in the Sidebar and correct the Burial fact in the right pane of the Timeline view. To eliminate the corrected date from the Group, edit the Group: Unmark Burial date contains aft Or you could Customize the People view with the burial date using the Group for a filter and scroll down looking for any dates you missed correcting. Open the Edit person screen and correct the date. If you want a printed list, create a Custom report with name, record number, death date, burial date. Use the above criteria to filter the report. Save and print the report and work from the printed report. I would suggest you also create the group to make it easier to find the people on the printed Custom report. Laura --------- *From:* "David E. Cann" <decann@infionline.net> *Subject:* [RMagic] Burial/death search within by date *Date:* Sat, 5 Jan 2013 19:34:59 -0500 I have tried just about everything I can think of to print a specific report of death and burial dates, but cannot seem to find the right combination of criteria to make it work. What I want to do is to print out a list of individuals who have death and burial dates that ARE THE SAME DATE. I have a fair number of them based on a very large cemetery record I managed to obtain, and when I started to notice what seemed to be more than a few folks shown as buried on the same date they died, I questioned it. I was assured they were correct, so I went ahead and entered them as shown. Now, I have more reason to question them and want to go back and change the date of burial to "aft 5 Feb 1891" (or the like) rather than "5 Feb 1891" that it current states. I am very surprised, but I cannot find any means of setting either Search & Replace or any other search tool to result in telling me who is shown with death and burial dates that are the same. Am I missing something, or is there no way of doing this. I prefer a printed list, that way I can do them one at a time and change them that way for accuracy, but if Search and Replace will do it then I can sure live with it. If anyone out there (are you out there Bruce?) reading this can straighten me out, I would appreciate it. Note that now with burials now being in cemeteries that no longer list in place names but in place details, it is now kind of different than it used to be and I cannot find the right combination to make it work. I appreciate any advice available out there, and thank you in advance. David E. Cann
