I started using dropbox as a backup "cloud" program for several years, specifically when I was using RM4. Suzie Henderson, website manager for Fannin Co., Texas' genealogy website introduced me to dropbox when she started using it to backup all the data for the Fannin County website. If you take a look at the "new" Fannin County, Texas website you will see it contains extrtraordinary amount of material with plans for adding two-three times data as much data as it now contains. Suzie tried several clouds and says she's happier with dropbox than any of the others. Many individiduals who submit data to Suzie generally do so via dropbox. The current goal of the website is to collect as obituary and/or death record, military records, etc., as can be found for each individual buried in Fannin County and "attaching" or linking that data to the "cemetery/burial" record. Eventually, land deeds and other misc. records may be added. Recently, I lost data I'd back up to another cloud, but all the genealogy and photos I'd backed up to dropbox was "safe" and downloadable. I'm very pleased with dropbox. Although I've not much effort to get free space by encouraging friends and acquaintances to use dropbox, over the years I've gained a fair amount of extra space by sharing gedcom's and/or photos via dropbox. Every time I close my RM software program, it is authomatically backed up to a folder I use for that purpose in dropbox. However, I'm interested in the small discussion about using Dropbox. I hadn't heard that before. Is this for backup AND for syncing? Can somebody please tell me which version of RM this facility became available? Would I have to go right up to version 6 to access this? And do I take it that this only involves Dropbox? Yes, it is for both backup and syncing as well as for sharing with others. If you give others permission, they can look at some of your files even if they don't have Dropbox. It doesn't matter what version of RM you use. You can put any kinds of files in Dropbox: photos, word processing, spread sheets, etc. Jim Bullock Littleton, Colorado -----Original Message----- From: rootsmagic-users-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:rootsmagic-users-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Judith Harper Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2013 8:06 PM To: rootsmagic-users@rootsweb.com Subject: [RMagic] A More basic question about dropbox I have been happily plodding along still using RM3, partly due to finances, partly because I've followed with some confusion all the varied questions on the list every time there's an upgrade. Dropbox needs to be installed on each device on which you wish to use it, including iPad, iPhone, laptop, desktop, etc. Once installed, link each installation to the same Dropbox account. Yes, to install Dropbox on your laptop, you would normally just download it again. To tell RootsMagic 6 to backup your files to Dropbox: 1. Tools 2. Program Options... 3. Folders 4. Click on the ... to the right of the Backup files line and navigate to your Dropbox folder. You can use a sub-folder within your Dropbox folder (Make New Folder), if you like. 5. Click "OK". On the Select a source screen or the Source Template screen, all you have to do is start typing the name of rhe template, Typing cen will take you to the Census templates. Typing w will take you to source templates starting with W. On the Select a source screen, highlight a source template. Click on the star just to the left of the Favorites menu at the top of the screen. The star next to the menu will turn gold and the template is added to the Favorites menu. Clicking on the star again removes the template from the menu. Add a frequently used source template to the Master source list as a source. Start the source name with a character and Template. It will sort to the top of the list. Enter any information that will always be used with a source from that template, such as County and State, special directions to yourself for when you use that source entered into the text or comments, or Repositories. When you want to use that source template again, copy the source template from the Master source list and make needed changes to the copy. I use this method for my Free Form sources. In the Master source text for the template source, I enter a source detail template for data to be entered into the Page number box for that type source. This can be read in or copied from the right pane when entering the source detail. Making a Master source template is the answer to not having to do the same thing over and over again. For instance, I have different source templates for censuses for the counties and states I use the most. I only have to change the year and the NARA number and roll and the source name. I suggest your friend go to http://www.bcgcertification.org/ for specific information on what it takes to get certified. A friend and more recent convert to RM is desirous of doing the required 5 genealogies sourced with RM sourcing tools. Conforming RM to Elizabeth Mills for Certified Genealogist status purposes. She would appreciate any advice available. Is it possible to create any of your own source templates? I seen to recall - not possible. But perhaps some have thought of useful work around's. Paul A. I too can be sloppy with documenting online searches on the Research Log, so yes, the Web Tags help with this. I use them whether they are formal sources or not, and mostly attach to the Person. I don't like having gazillions of census images, for example, on my hard drive so I use the Web Tags to assist with my "cloud storage." I also use them to link to sites such as online family trees that have the potential to be helpful later. I'm trying to be consistent with adding the date I visited the site and other relevant information, like the website creator, in the Note section of the Web Tag in case the sites disappear down the road. That way, the Way Back Machine or Google might help me find it again. Connie
Somehow, you must have run RootsMagic ToGo and got RootsMagic into the C:\Program Files\ folder because that RootsMagicapp.xml file doesn't normally show up in the C:\Program Files (x86)\RootsMagic 6\ folder, but on mine it is in C:\Program Data\RootsMagic\version 6\ Now, on the flash drive where I have the ToGo version, it IS in the same folder as the program files. I do not understand the error message just giving you a path and filename. If you double click on that file it will open in your web browser and you will see a very short web page with your user name and user registration number, in a code of some kind. I would use Windows Explorer to look for another copy of RootsMagic.exe and see if you have two copies installed. If not, then you could try reinstalling but I think it will still think you are in TOGO mode unless you get rid of those two xml files in there. Deleting the whole RootsMagic 6 folder and reinstalling might be better but be careful that you don't delete any of your data or backup files _ They shouldn't be in the Program Files folder anyway. AND, you MAY have to re enter your user-name and registration number. Alfred =============== Tim Cox wrote: > When I launched RM6 on my desktop it told me that I was using RM To Go but > I wasn't. Several years ago I added a user-defined fact called #Not Married. A tip from another user long ago is the reason I add an asterisk in front of my user-defined facts. Makes it a lot easier to know when I can change the fact, rename it, or whatever I want to do with it. I chose not to use #Never Married because there have been times I was told or thought someone never married, only to find a spouse later in my research. I also color code unmarried people, so I can see at a glance not to waste time searching for a spouse for those people. Makes my life easier. I also created a user-defined fact called #childless. I only use it when I know for sure that they never had a child. You could create this fact for a couple and another one to use for individuals when one of them did have children. You could color code those people, too, if you want to.
