    3. Totally agree with you, Tom - and I'm unsettled by the statement that equates to a fiat - that there is no further discussion - . Isn't that attitude antithetical to the whole concept of an email list? Considering the fact that Roots Magic had incorporated familysearch and My Heritage inextricably into the program, it's difficult to understand why Roots Magic administration isn't interested in permitting further discussion. I am assuming that you are voicing the opinion of Roots Magic - is that incorrect? "*Topic:* A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding the RootsMagic genealogy software program from RootsMagic." WebHints from MyHeritage is now a feature of RootsMagic which is useless without a subscription to MyHeritage. So a discussion about the RootsMagic WebHints feature cannot be separated from the question of the subscription. If somebody asks, "is it worthwhile upgrading to RM7?", how can it be answered without touching on the cost and benefits of a MyHeritage subscription? 3. I started just the opposite ... with MyHeritage (trees) and the subscription because I had more than the number of people that were allow/shown in their FREE option. Then they got my name from the World Vital Records joining and offered me both for the price of one for 6 months. It took a while to figure out what had happened because I had just paid the $119 year rate then received the email I was getting a free $119 subscription! I 'think' the $119 gives me both MyHeritage 'tree' benefits AND what was World Vital Records 'document' benefits. They are often a bit slow to respond to things, but have always found them completely legal and helpful. When I do my WebHints in RM I usually just select the documents rather than the tree option .... eventually maybe I'll look at the trees, but for now it's documents (or document type items) that I want first! But my history with them began with a World Vital Records subscription which they took over in the last year or so. Then they gave me a free MyHeritage Premium Site subscription. When the auto-renewal went through, I lost the Site subscription and ended up with only a Data subscription ($9.95/mo payable annually). That means that I have access to records through RootsMagic WebHints > MyHeritage > Record Matches but not for SmartMatches to MyHeritage Trees. So, as far as I can tell, there are two independent subscriptions at $9.95/mo each, one for databases and one for trees, i.e., one for Record Matches, another for SmartMatches. 1. [RMagic] Named Groups--Dynamic vs Static
    2. Ted Meikle via
    3. I am excited that some attention was paid to Named Groups in RM7. However, unless I am missing something, there is a feature that could make them much more elegant and useful. Currently, all named groups are static. For example, assume I create a new group, then click Mark Group/Select People by Data Group, then create a search for First Name equals Joe, and then name the group People Named Joe. Afterwards, if a add a new person named Joe, the Data Group will not include him, because it is static. Moreover, if I go back to Edit that group, it does not save the search I used to create the group in the first place, so I cannot easily update the Group without re-creating the search. Instead, it shows the last search I did. Some uses of Named Groups created by searches need to remain static; some only work if they automatically update to include new persons who meet the criteria of the search. Examples of where a dynamic Named Group would be useful: A group of all people color-coded a certain color. A group of all people matched to FamilySearch persons. It would be wonderful if one could specify with a checkbox whether a Named Group created by a search should by Dynamic or Static. If Static, it would behave as Named Groups now do (except it would save the search used). If Dynamic, it would save the search criteria, and automatically rerun the search when the Named Group is opened, showing all people who currently meet the criteria. Or, at least, if the above is not determined to be worth the development effort, change the current static Named Groups so that if a group is created by a search, the search is saved with the Named Group so the group can easily be updated without having to re-create the search.

    3. I would say it has something to do with RootsMagic, since they have integrated it into the program!!! If it's a scam, why is RM partnering with them??? That would make RM part of the scam. I'm fairly new to RM. I tried clicking on some of the light bulb icons. In almost every case, I already have the information. But there are no light bulb icons for about half of the people in my tree, mostly branches in Germany, France, Italy and Luxembourg. These are the very people I need to find records for. In most cases, I'm taken to FamilySearch records which I found myself months or years ago. In one case, I was taken to the baptismal record of an ancestor that someone has connected to the wrong parents. RM wanted me to approve that, but I wasn't about to as I have a digital image from the film itself, and it's very clear who his parents are. Carol Anne MyHeritage appears to be a scam -- see here: http://wp.me/pfvXY-6P but it really doesn't seem to have anything to do with RootsMagic, so there seems to be little point in discussing it here.

A lot of energy in the room, it was great! Just created 3 RM websites and due to being near first in line was able to snag a website name with just the last name of the ancestor line. Figure if someone is searching, they will search by a last name, and might as well keep it short. Those that come on board a year from now, when many more names not available, will have to lengthen their names to make them "available." Went to the tools, program options, folders and set up the primary file for data to be on my computer C drive, designated a file etc. So far so good. For backup, I periodically hook up my external hard drive, think is it F drive. Do you know if I can backup in two places? Perhaps list dropbox as the first backup and then separate that from the second backup F drive, with a comma or semi colon?? Realize one could try it and see what happens, but thought would ask first. Have a good rest of the weekend.... PS: Hope you did not miss yesterday's Patriots game. No way ancestory could be more exciting. I am not a sports person, do not understand details of football , but it was a great game... Ted

    3. I too, would like to know what records (preferably in the form of digital images) MyHeritage has that neither Ancestry nor FamilySearch has. I'm not interested in putting a tree on MyHeritage. Only records that I can't get elsewhere would interest me. (Records from Cappelle sul Tavo, Italy and Scy-Chazelles, France would be great, as would court records and deeds in the US). I don't want to pay another site for the same thing I get at Ancestry and the free FamilySearch site! The MyHeritage website doesn't give you any info on what they have to offer that I can find. More user submitted trees full of errors just doesn't appeal to me. 3. Just a bit of clarification on my statement that "the buttons to select the type of webpage are also mislabeled" are obviously mislabeled. If you go to Website File Type menu, you will find the 2 choices (BOTH INCORRECTLY MARKED) shown as: 1. RootsMagic 6 Style 2. Pre-RootsMagic 6 Style It took me quite a bit of time to figure out that both of these labels are incorrect and should correctly say RootsMagic 7, not 6. The new webpage style is for RootsMagic 7, and it took me several hours of trial and error before I finally discovered that what I was looking for was NOT RootsMagic 6 Style even though it was. The labels are simply incorrect and should read "RootsMagic 7" or "Pre-RootsMagic 7," respectively, but that is something only Bruce and crew can fix. David E. 3. I am interested in the Myheritage.com integration with RM Webhints and the special offer available from Myheritage until tomorrow, but I'm not finding the Myheritage web site very helpful in making a decision. The web site seems to imply that creating a family tree on their site is required. I am not interested in creating a family tree at Myheritage.com. I am already subscribed to Ancestry.com (U.S. only). Can anyone tell me what Myheritage.com brings to the table that is not already available from Ancestry and/or FamilySearch? The integration with RM Webhints is nice but I would have to see added value in the form of research resources available for the offer to be worthwhile to me. John N.

    3. Even if you don't have a subscription to MyHeritage, you can still see enough of what information they have, for example, a newspaper article or someone who has a tree on their site, and it shows you little bits of info. So I have checked MyHeritage for that purpose. I am not going to subscribe. BP
