Anyone else unable to access their new web site using RM7 Internet My Rootsmagic? RootsMagic does not "set up" the media links, it just imports the media link you as you had it in TMG. You can tell RM where you pics are by going to tools, options. Just select the same folder your pics are in. OK, I might have misunderstood the underscore at the beginning of _SDATE. I'd thought it was to indicate a RM-specific tag, but you seem to be saying it indicates a non-strict tag that may or may not be used by other programs too. As it happens, the programs that I've tried to import this .ged file to don't use sort dates. I'm not sure how they handle events that are newly entered, but for ones that are already in the file you can simply move them up and down the list to where you want them. Like Jon (message not quoted here) I use sort dates quite a lot, so having to get rid of them could be a significant task. However, I've thought of two possible ways round it: (a) the program that accepts _SDATE tags but ignores them creates a .ged file without the _SDATE tags, but I don't know whether it does anything else to the file which I'd prefer it not to (b) I came across a utility called GedPad which allows editing of a GEDCOM file, including the removal of all lines containing certain strings of characters. There may be other similar utilities too. Anyway, thanks for the replies, Arthur On 13/01/2015 20:31, Tom Holden wrote: > I don't think you have missed anything. _SDATE is a de facto standard > recognised by many other programs. To TMS Users that have moved to RootsMagic, I need your help. I send a request to RootsMagic Technical Support and received the attached. Seems RootsMagic Users are the people to ask if having a problem with RootsMagic. I transferred my TMG data (all 42K people) to RootsMagic, and the data was transferred correctly, with the exception of Media (Photos and Documents, about 1K of them). Before the transferred, I used The "Moving Data from TMG to RootsMagic" and moved all Exhibits from Internal to External. Thanks for your help.....Bobby | Bobby Minish, Jan 07 12:28: I just loaded my data from TMG and all data was moved to RootMagic correctly, with the exception of Media (Photos and Documents). When I look at Media for an individual in RootsMagic, the photo there is a black box, surrounded by a red line with a red X in the middle. It says the File is in C:\Program Files\TMG Utility\p000001-001206.jpg. Each individual seems to have a different \p000009-000090.jpg. After loading my data, I added a document to a person and that document shows for that person and the file is located at C:\Users\Bobby\Pictures\Nora Alice Gilliam Johnson OB 1927.jpg. QUESTION: how do I get all my photos and documents to show up in RootsMagic. I am at a lost. Regards....Bobby | Your request (#48374) has been updated. To review the status of the request and add additional comments, follow the link below: http://support.rootsmagic.com/requests/48374 You can also add a comment by replying to this email. Cina, Jan 13 12:07: Bobby, Thank you for contacting RootsMagic support for help with your media files after importing them from TMG. Prior to importing your file into RootsMagic, did you have access to and follow the instructions provided in the help document that one of our former TMG users made? I have attached it in case you didn't have access to it. One of the steps for preparing to import the data is to, "Use TMG Utility to export any “internal” media items to “external” media items." If you did not do that, and your exhibits were stored as internal files, perhaps that is why your media files are marked as ...\p000001-001206.jpg and are not being seen by RootsMagic. If you didn't have the document that I have provided for you, please use it to prepare your files for importing, then try the import again. If you still have a problem with seeing the media, please let me know. There is a tool in the Media Gallery of RootsMagic that is used to relink broken media links. You can try using it. The main thing is, the file on your computer must have the EXACT same name as the file in RootsMagic. If you are using the same computer as you used with TMG, hopefully, you will be able to get the photos relinked. I would also encourage you to join the mail list group as there are TMG users on this list. They will be a great resource for you, as they know TMG and have already gone through much of what you will be going through to move your file. Here is the link to the mail group. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS.html If you still need help, please let me know. Cina Attachment(s) TMGDoc.pdf | | I had a copy of the "Moving Data from TMG to RootsMagic"document and followed it to the letter, including moving all exhibits fromInternal to External. TMG and RootsMagic are loaded on the same computer. I have also joined RootsMagic Users.

The RM7 Publish Online feature actually uploads your database file to the MyRootsMagic.com server which generates pages on the fly when queried by a browser. Hence, no local staging for you to vet. I don't know what the answer is about Surname capitalization and the failure to upper case the accented characters. The former may be totally under the control of the server-side processing, having nothing to do with your database settings and the latter is clearly a bug which you should report to Tech Support. Open the Media Gallery and click on the List button. RootsMagic imports the links from TMG and does not change them unless the "Fix broken media links" process finds a file of that name somewhere else. Charlie, The RM7 sites are not html, so the program doesn't generate files on your computer. Is there a way to look at how Rootsmagic has set up the links to the files? The solution could be as simple as moving the media and whatever else files to folders in the relation to the data files that Rootsmagic is expecting. Dora -----Original Message----- From: Tom Holden via Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2015 9:33 AM To: Bobby Minish ; [email protected] Subject: Re: [RMagic] TMG users that have moved to RootsMagic, need your help. Cina's statement "There is a tool in the Media Gallery of RootsMagic that is used to relink broken media links. You can try using it. " is part of the advice you need. Your TMG Utility extracted the Internal Media to individual files in the folder "C:\Program Files\TMG Utility\" and made the necessary modifications to your TMG Project. RootsMagic imported the pointers to those files but they are evidently not there which is why the red X appears in the thumbnail image space, indicating that the media link is broken. It may be broken for a couple of reasons: 1. The files have been deleted 2. The files have been relocated 3. Because they are in the Windows "Program Files" folder, RootsMagic is not allowed to see them. One should not store user files in this area and I would have thought that TMG Utility would have given you the opportunity to select or create a folder in your user area. #1 is bad news and you will have to go back to your TMG Project as it was before you used TMG Utility to export Internal Media and reiterate. #2 should be fixed by running the tool "Fix broken media links". #3 Check if this is true by opening Windows File Explorer and browse to "C:\Program Files\TMG Utility\" and see if the .jpg files are there. You will likely need to assert Administrator privilege to open the Program Files folder. If they are there, then you should move them to where you want RootsMagic to be looking to store media items and then "Fix broken media links". I just recently upgraded to RM 7, and have a few questions about the new web sites generated by the program. First, I love how quick it works.... and find it very similar to what I had using RM 6. However, there are a couple of things I don't understand. 1. With RM6, a copy of the web site was available on my computer. I found it very useful to create a shortcut to the site on my computer, and have the data viewable without using the web. I found this much faster than my horribly slow internet service. But with RM7, I can't find any such feature. Am I just missing it, or does it no longer exist? If it doesn't exist, is it still possible to generate the old style site? 2. I DON'T Capitalize surnames in my database, because it makes it difficult to see how some surnames with multiple words are spelled. However, in the new site, Surnames are all caps, EXCEPT letters like <è> . So my ancestors surname comes out like this: PèRRILARD, which looks absolutely stupid. How do I tell the program not to capitalize the entire surname? (I do not have the box checked <display surnames upper case>). -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://my.rootsmagic.com/CRHoffpauir/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.hoffpauir http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hoffpauir

I'm using RM 6.3.1.4, and have discovered an issue with not being able to exclude sort dates from an exported .ged file. Sort dates are typically found in a pair with an approximate date for an event, or else on their own where no date is known: 2 DATE ABT 1823 2 _SDATE 1 JUL 1823 I gather that the underscore indicates that this is a RM-specific tag. One program I tried to import this file to seems to simply ignore the sort date, but in another one the existence of the sort date appears to cause all kinds of problems with any event address following, such as not including it at all, or mapping it to the wrong field. I appreciate that there may be issues to raise with the other program, but there is a RM issue too: if I try to get round this by excluding RM-specific data from the GEDCOM export, this _SDATE tag is still created. Other RM tags such as _COLOR are excluded, but the sort date remains. Have I missed some setting? Thanks for any help, Arthur

Sort date? I've never heard of it. I'm familiar with birth date, christening date, marriage date, death date, and burial date, and lately some software has adopted some version of "living" dates, which can be, living in New York City on the 1900 census, or living at this date. Those dates are enough for me. If the software just prints out "23 Jul 1610 or 1597-1602" when that's what I put in, I am happy. It sounds as though you are transferring your GEDCOM from another software to RootsMagic. Is that correct? The GEDCOM you are trying to transfer has been created with the "Suppress information about the living" or whatever it is called in your software setting ON. You must create the GEDCOM with this setting OFF for the information about living people to be transferred to RootsMagic. Send us a little more information and we'll try to help.
