    3. You cannot do any report from RM that covers two databases but RM7 does compare two. 3. The neat thing about RM's sources is you can use their template, create your own template, and make them come out as simple or complex as you like. What I did is made a copy of the Ancestry source template, changed the name to FamilySearch template, and use that. Then for each database/digital image archive, I create a separate source using that new template. Here's how it looks: Footnote: "Ohio County Marriages 1789-1994," Digital images of Ohio Marriage Records, FamilySearch (http://www.familysearch.org/ : Downloaded 6 April 2011), Marriage Record of John P Zuber and Sarah Florence Cutright. 3. Are there any reasons why one would need that kind of detail (as the example below) from information found on FamilySearch given the fact that FamilySearch is really not a source. For me it would be a waste of time to make the citation any more specific. I use simply: FamilySearch; LDS database That way anyone noticing that is where I got my "hint" would need to look further for proper verification. I do many transcriptions from standard genealogy reference books, and always attempt to source them as directly and as simply as possible. My goal is for people using my information be able to go back and get the book or census or whatever, and turn to the page to see how I interpreted what is there. It can become very easy to waste time with sourcing when one should spend the time evaluating whether the information one is sourcing actually hangs together and makes sense. I also use generic type sources for census schedules by year, birth certificates, death certificates, etc. Margaret Scheffler -----Original Message----- From: David Finnigan via Subject: [RMagic] Citing FamilySearch I have just found an ancestor on FamilySearch. 3. Rootsmagic (or any program for that matter) can stop working or "hang" at points. When I have problems with RM, once out of the problem, I always restart the computer. Often we may have several programs open at the same time, which can occasionally cause conflicts. Starting with a fresh reboot clears out the computer's memory and may well solve the problem. You may not lose anything by turning off the computer, but it is always wise to backup your RM database every hour or so. It does not take much time, and it gives one peace of mind should some problem occur Margaret Scheffler -----Original Message----- From: Emery St Cyr via I was on rm6 and clicked on the person that I wanted to add a fact to and when I clicked on add a fact I got the little blue circle that goes around next to the pointer and it never goes off and I can't do anything on rm. 3. One of the reasons I like and make use of RMs Source Citations is to make sure my citations are not simple and generic. As Elizabeth Shown Mills points out "research is a process that requires continual comparison of new information against the old." I appreciate that RM helps me to keep track of the specific and detailed source citations so that I may make those continual comparisons. It is also necessary to be able to find that source or to lead another researcher to that source. That is why the details are essential. It is the sourcing that helps us evaluate the evidence within that source. 3. As LL pointed out. Go to the familysearch catalog, put in the film number and you will get the source for the information. In your case it was item 7 which refers to: Church of England. Parish Church of Ludham (Norfolk); Norfolk and Norwich Record Office in Norwich is the repository. But since you did not actually look at the original register in England, but rather the film online (or in FHL) you need to cite that as your source and then cite the original. RM makes this easy. Use Church records: film of LDS records at FHL; church & series as lead element Ref: [EE, QC-7, p316] On Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 9:58 PM, LLScott via <[email protected]> wrote: > If you have the film# go to the FS catalog and look up the film and its > content. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Lynne Roberts via > Sent: Friday, January 30, 2015 10:46 PM > To: 'David Finnigan' ; [email protected] > Subject: Re: [RMagic] Citing FamilySearch > > I sympathize - it took an act of Congress to convince Familysearch that > Familysearch wasn't an acceptable source! 3. I sympathize - it took an act of Congress to convince Familysearch that Familysearch wasn't an acceptable source! You have to drill down - and at times I've had to make personal inquiries to determine the source of their information. Having the film # is helpful, but of course that's where you access it - it isn't the source. Start digging - and if you can't find it from the site, don't hesitate to email them for the information - but be sure that you retain all the information so you can relate it to them. The transcription shows the following citation details: "England Marriages, 1538-1973 ," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NNKK-T4K : accessed 31 January 2015), Samuel Page and Elizabeth Blythe, 26 Oct 1800; citing Ludham, Norfolk, England, reference item 7; FHL microfilm 1,911,695. Which RM source should I be using to get this result? I couldn't find anything that looked similar. Thanks. 3. You mean the program is hung? Try control alt delete - assuming it's a Windows PC or laptop. It may let you close the hung program. Otherwise you will have to use the power button to shut down the computer by holding it until the power goes off. I've no idea why you got this error, however. Are you using an older computer, maybe Windows XP, with inadequate resources? Did you have several programs open at one time? A newer computer could handle that, but older ones can't. If you know someone who is tech savvy you might check into whether upgrading the RAM would help. On some older XP computers it wouldn't. 3. Well, the notes copy over fine. I put my sources in my notes, so I couldn't tell you for sure - but give it a try! You can try RM7 for free. 3. You can put both files on screen side by side in RM 6. Look at each person's parents and other known data. If both are the same then You can drag and drop the person in question to the other file. I caution you about dragging the ancestors or descendants because you can get a lot of duplicates. NEXT You can edit this person to remove bad or incorrect info. Now backup tour databases. Check other names likewise. Moving up to RM 7 gives you more options, but in this case you already knw that the files are alike, so upgrade is not necessary. 3. Upgrade to RM7 which has a File Compare function which looks for matching people and works best if each file descended from a common file. If you are stuck on RM6, you could open both files and tile their windows side-by-side. Customize People View to add th column "Date lasted edited" and maybe add the Record Number" column. Arrange these to be right next to the name column. Sort on the name columns and scan for matching record numbers, different names, which has the later dates, etc. Or you could make a custom report in each database with these fields, print to paper and compare.
