I have just found an ancestor on FamilySearch. The transcription shows the following citation details: "England Marriages, 1538-1973 ," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NNKK-T4K : accessed 31 January 2015), Samuel Page and Elizabeth Blythe, 26 Oct 1800; citing Ludham, Norfolk, England, reference item 7; FHL microfilm 1,911,695. Which RM source should I be using to get this result? I couldn't find anything that looked similar. Thanks. Cheers David
That comes fairly close to the way FamilySearch tells you, at the bottom of the search results, to cite the record. I find that some of the records in a given database will have an image and some won't, so if there is an image, I put that in the "Item of Interest" box. If you want a separate source for every record you find, you could just copy the source info from FamilySearch and paste it into the "Free Form" template, I suppose. Barbara - if the NEW Password / Pass-code you received with your purchase of RM7 doesn't work - you need to contact RM support and get some help. So I went to the Website and downloaded 7.0.4.0 from there. Since I have had the full registered versions for years, I chose to Unlock Version 7. The screen which comes up when I enter my name and registration number has the Unlock choice grayed out and is unclickable. When I cancel it RM Essential Version opens immediately. I use the Basic Ancestry Images Template and this is the result: Footnote: "New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ : accessed 18 January 2015), entry for John Grigg and Kezia Hunt, 29 Dec 1802; citing Sussex, New Jersey, New Jersey State Archives, Trenton; FHL microfilm 961,018. Digital image. Short Footnote: "New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956," index and images, FamilySearch, entry for John Grigg and Kezia Hunt, 29 Dec 1802; citing Sussex, New Jersey, New Jersey State Archives, Trenton; FHL microfilm 961,018. Digital image. Bibliography: "New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956." Index and images. FamilySearch. https://familysearch.org/ : 2015. I put all of this in the "Item of Interest" box "entry for John Grigg and Kezia Hunt, 29 Dec 1802; citing Sussex, New Jersey, New Jersey State Archives, Trenton; FHL microfilm 961,018. Digital image" That way, I can use "New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956" for other marriages in the database, but you could put it in "Credit Line" if you want to create a separate source for every record. I just copy and paste the info from FamilySearch and make a few changes. Amen! When I first started researching my family, I got a head start with a compiled genealogy produced by about three generations of my family going back from my grandmother. And they had records that seemed to suport it. I incorporated that genealogy into my new research. Eventually, in the search for full documentation I came to the realization that that long established genealogy was incorrect - a case of same name, right time, right location - a major coincidence, but but the wrong progenitor. It took me about 2 years to completely research and document a new genealogy for the Roberts line. And everyone who copied and pasted information off my website, off my family tree, and didn't do any research on their own, copied wrong information. So I know whereof I speak - and I am appalled at the number of people who continue to copy genealogy from someone else's tree. Just 'cause it's on the internet, doesn't make it so. Just 'cause it looks right in name, time and place, doesn't make it so, either. Dora RM has had side by side file compare since version 5. The new File Compare uses a different method to compare files one individual at a time and show you the ones that don't match. It is for comparing an older file with the newer one to find if theyt are alike or the differences. The drag and drop has been available since version 5. Yes the sources built in are moved also. Those that are user designed are not. Copy the one Family search gave and put it into the source Family Search. It is one that is on the main source list. Ref to the one that FS provided is a good idea. I think you put more in your citation than I would - but I heartily agree with your inclusion of the actual source of the original document - Sussesx, NJ, NJ State Archives, and the film number - as well as the access point. That way if you want more vital record material from Sussex Co, NJ, this source also tells you where to look for it. And you have the confidence of knowing it came from a government record and not from a compiled genealogy. "England Marriages" would be a database of index entries. As long as the citation provides the microfilm number of the image copy of the ultimate source, I don't see the problem. That is sometimes the only thing one can do if a computer hangs. However, it isn't a good solution long term. It can corrupt your operating system. In fact, last fall, when I was helping college students connect their assorted devices to an ISP, one of those students who always just presses the power off button and won't be talked into shutting it down properly, found right at that exact moment that the computer wouldn't boot. He'd corrupted the operating system. In the long run one needs to figure out why the computer is hanging and solve that problem. Also, there is more that one can do with control alt delete to shut down a hung program than either of us put in our posts last night before Emery St Cyr resorted to the power button. Most of what you said below is that you have no idea what to do with a window, but if you're using Windows 8 it would confuse the nether end off a horse, and the latest Mac operating system unfortunately tried to imitate Windows 8. (Windows 8 is so unpopular it nearly brought the computer industry to a complete halt; people who don't know how to build their own computer stopped buying - I don't know what is WITH these corporate people.) I have training in Windows desktop support, and have done a call center job where I had to help people with Macs as well, so we ought to be able to figure it out. You're right - the whole point of sourcing and citing (just like footnotes in a research paper) is to inform the reader where that original record can be found for further research. I have found a great deal of information simply by searching out sources and citations found in books and other locations. So in your example, if I want to see the original records, I wouldn't have clue where to look. However, if you added a blurb providing the source of the original records, researchers could go back and find the material. No different than with a source that tells you that a will is with specific county court records in a specific will book and on a specific page, e.g., Louisa County, VA Court Records, Will Book K, pp 273-275. Then, no matter where those court records end up (starting in the court house, ending up in a centralized records administration or the state library) you would know exactly what you were looking for in order to see that original record. Family history library films are terrific, and I've certainly used them, but I've found many records that were simply unreadable on the microfilm, and I had to go back and use a copy of the original. Knowing the original source was critical. I also agree that sourcing is being treated like an arcane process - I'm fascinated by the variety of formats offered in Roots Magic. I, too, use generic formats and frequently use free form (thank heavens they retained that!!) especially for census data. I personally think it's become ridiculously overcomplicated. Several basic formats would serve all situations nicely - however, I realize that my opinion is definitely in the minority now. For me it would be a waste of time to make the citation any more specific. I use simply: FamilySearch; LDS database That way anyone noticing that is where I got my "hint" would need to look further for proper verification. I do many transcriptions from standard genealogy reference books, and always attempt to source them as directly and as simply as possible. My goal is for people using my information be able to go back and get the book or census or whatever, and turn to the page to see how I interpreted what is there. It can become very easy to waste time with sourcing when one should spend the time evaluating whether the information one is sourcing actually hangs together and makes sense. I also use generic type sources for census schedules by year, birth certificates, death certificates, etc. Margaret Scheffler -----Original Message----- From: David Finnigan via Subject: [RMagic] Citing FamilySearch I have just found an ancestor on FamilySearch. In my own research, if I found it in FamilySearch online, that's what I quote. But, if they have an online image of the original document, and I have seen that, then I quote that too. Drill down is right, though. I accepted some of FamilySearch's suggestions as sources to attach, so I attached them, and then tried to find them to get more information, and that proved much more difficult, and took about five clicks to eventually see the original. I don't know how one would do that from within RM. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: [email protected]
