Hello listers I'm in hot water again. Have you ever clicked on something and said oop's? I had the same person listed in my index twice and in my attempt to delete one I lost their information. When I re added it I messed up and now I have one screen showing the husband with no wife or her parents, but the children On the other screen I have everything but the children. Do I just add the children, and if so how do I get rid of the unwanted screen? Em
Pat, That's pretty close. There is one correction. The tree you see isn't your database, but it isn't someone elses either. The FamilySearch Family Tree is a combined tree, meaning it doesn't belong to a specific person and anybody can edit / modify / add sources to it. It works different than the MyHeritage WebHints. With the MyHeritage WebHints you are confirming / rejecting whether the source belongs to the person in your own tree. With the FamilySearch WebHints you are confirming / rejecting whether the source belongs to that person on FamilySearch, whether that person is the same as your RM person or not. - Bruce On Thu, Feb 5, 2015 at 6:00 PM, Pat McGrath via < [email protected]> wrote: > Wow! I'm not sure if this is the officially correct terminology, but FamilySearch has a community tree that all users contribute to. It's sort of a Wiki kind of thing, if you are familiar with how that works. It's like all of us RM users loaded all our data up to one big database in the sky and combined it together (plus lots of other people who are not using RM). If I see a correction to some data that's already out there, I can simply make the correction and vice versa for somebody else looking at data that I have put out there. There are procedures in place to document what changes were made, who made them, when they were made, and why. For the most part, this has all been taking place by users logging into the FamilySearch site and doing their work from there. FamilySearch has recently added a way that such updates can be made from programs such as RM without users having to logon directly to FamilySearch. Ok, so you have the community tree out there, the results of the collective research of all the FamilySearch users. Also, FamilySearch has bunches of databases out there - censuses, birth records, death records, and lots more. These databases are not part of the community tree. They are just raw data. These databases can serve as sources for users who are putting data into the community tree. The next step in the hints process is that FamilySearch runs some automated processes behind the scenes to try to find connections between their databases and the community tree that has been built by their users. You can logon to FamilySearch and see these hints as Record Hints. FamilySearch only finds the hints and makes them available. It doesn't confirm or deny whether they were correct - for example, whether John Doe age 5 in the 1850 census was the same person as a John Doe in the community tree who was born in 1845. FamilySearch users themselves confirm or reject the hints. What's happening with RM is that data in your database is being matched against the community tree. The matches may or may not be correct. That's for your to decide. But if the matches between your database and the community tree are correct, and if the Record Hints between the community tree and the FamilySearch databases are correct, then you will have found matches between your database and the FamilySearch databases. There is nothing in the process that will bring sourcing information from the FamilySearch databases back into your database. You will have to do that manually. Nevertheless, the hints can be quite useful. Also, you can use RM to confirm the hints, except that the process is not really confirming the hints between your database and the community tree nor between your database and the FamilySearch databases. Rather, the process is confirming the hints between the community tree and the FamilySearch databases, the same thing you can do by logging on directly to FamilySearch without using RM at all. The solution that I went with was to create a new source - based on Basic Ancestry Database Template - called FamilySearch and I moved CreditLine, URL and ItemTitle into the variable part of the citation so that it works for different sources referenced by FamilySearch. Thanks once again for the wide variety of interesting comments. It is clearly a topic that can be resolved in many ways - which thankfully RM allows. Some people care more than others about the form of sources. LDS will give you an entire class on how to do them if you're interested. I always just put them in the notes - much faster that way, and most software and most places where you can upload your tree will display whatever is in your notes. Some of them also display your sources. In the notes you of course put your discussion as well. The important thing is that people can evaluate your information and find the source if needed. Dora -----Original Message----- From: Lynne Roberts via Sent: Saturday, January 31, 2015 11:40 AM To: 'MScheffler' ; [email protected] Subject: Re: [RMagic] Citing FamilySearch You're right - the whole point of sourcing and citing (just like footnotes in a research paper) is to inform the reader where that original record can be found for further research. I have found a great deal of information simply by searching out sources and citations found in books and other locations. So in your example, if I want to see the original records, I wouldn't have clue where to look. However, if you added a blurb providing the source of the original records, researchers could go back and find the material. No different than with a source that tells you that a will is with specific county court records in a specific will book and on a specific page, e.g., Louisa County, VA Court Records, Will Book K, pp 273-275. Then, no matter where those court records end up (starting in the court house, ending up in a centralized records administration or the state library) you would know exactly what you were looking for in order to see that original record. Family history library films are terrific, and I've certainly used them, but I've found many records that were simply unreadable on the microfilm, and I had to go back and use a copy of the original. Knowing the original source was critical. I also agree that sourcing is being treated like an arcane process - I'm fascinated by the variety of formats offered in Roots Magic. I, too, use generic formats and frequently use free form (thank heavens they retained that!!) especially for census data. I personally think it's become ridiculously overcomplicated. Several basic formats would serve all situations nicely - however, I realize that my opinion is definitely in the minority now. I did use those keys and I didn’t see that box come up now that you mention it. All is well now but I am not sure if I try to add a fact again that the same thing won’t happen. Barbara, You need to purchase an unlock code for version 7. The unlock code you purchased for a previous version does not work with the new version. The upgrade is not free. Bruce By chance I stumbled upon something that I believe might be a serious bug in Rootsmagic 7. When importing a Family Origins ver 10 database into Rootsmagic ver 7, I found that repositories are in a haphazard way attached to sources. None of my FO 10 sources has any repositories attached to it !! When I use a gedcom from the SAME Fowin 10 database and import this into Rootsmagic 7, the source is imported correctly. In Fowin 10 I use repositories ONLY for ToDo items of which I have a lot. None of my sources do have any repository attached. I could repeat this error with several databases received from co-workers. Could you kindly look into this please. Regards and keep well. Barend J Venter
Thanks to Suzanne, Lynne, Margaret & LL for their quick and clear responses. I hadn't twigged to the fact that I need to cite what I am looking at rather than the original source (which I hadn't seen - although in some cases I was seeing an image of the original). Cheers David
