I previously sent this information but apparently no one noticed. I have been experimenting with preparing a tree/book using RM including everything I have on Ancestry for descendants of an individual including sources and media. I have Family Tree Maker 14 which I use to synchronize with my on line Ancestry tree. I enter information from Ancestry mostly instead of FTM. Ancestry does not have the space for notes and other goodies that RM has. I found that if I synchronized the tree to FTM, it would first synchronize the data. Then it made a file of the media in a separate folder. Then I made a gedcom from FTM 14 of the person I wanted with his descendants - Not the whole tree - and imported it into a blank RM database. This is like Bruce's UTubo demo except I did it from FTM not Ancestry.com. and I selected people instead of selecting all. Then I clicked on the FTM media folder just created by the synchronization. I wanted to see where the folder was. I copied the location of the FTM media. Then I went to RM Tools, program option, Folders, Multimedia Files, then I pasted the location where the little dots are. You might have to write it down and type it, but I found that copy and paste worked well. Then I went to the database and chose a person. I clicked on the checkmark in the very top (general) square (camera icon). That brought up the pictures I had for that person. Before that, I didn't have a picture showing with his data. Somewhere in there it wanted to build a thumbnail. The choice as whether to do that is on the "tools, program option page." All the pictures are together in a gallery but just the ones that pertained to an individual showed up when I clicked the check mark in the very top (general). Then I had to select which one of the pictures I wanted to be primary. From here on, it is just RM instructions. It took me a while to figure out just how to select the person's picture to show but it is in the RM directions. I had 6 pictures which showed up. The pictures have the same names connected to an individual and they are in the same place that FTM 14 looks for them. Roots Magic will look for them in the same place. I made this into a separate tree because I was just working on one surname. If anyone wants to see how the sources came over from Ancestry, I'll be glad to send an example. When I merged the people from the one ancestor on RM with the people from Ancestry, there were a few things that needed to be edited in the notes, but all the pictures and sources were there. What is on Ancestry originally came from my Roots Magic Database. The output from Roots Magic vs Family Tree Maker 2014 was so much better. Betty
Hi: Is there a way, other than manually editing so everything matches, repositories? Only see auto-merge which means that only the different of a comma make it not merge !! Pat
In this case where both records have a relationship, do not delete one, merge them. Merging them will maintain the relationships to both the spouse and the parent. That's true. If I know they're duplicates and there is no information with one of them I usually delete them, but one can also merge them, and then one knows they are all there. Hi. I use RM7 as my main genealogical software, but I also use Family Tree Maker 2014 because of the ease of integrating Ancestry.com citations. I would like to update my RM7 files occasionally with new information from Family Tree Maker. Is there an easy way to do that? Thank you, Tom McFarland

The only transfer mechanism from FTM versions post 2006 is via GEDCOM. Likewise for Ancestry. RootsMagic Inc encourages us users to press Ancestry to make an API available to 3rd party developers so that their software could interact directly with Ancestry in ways similar to what can be done with FamilySearch and with MyHeritage. Oh, I hope so! I have been finding tons of records from Ancestry to FTM 2014, but much prefer RM7....speedier, user friendly for this old lady....whereas FTM2014 is slow to load, difficult to use (although I deserve blame for not become more familiar with how it works). So, please answer to list how we can transfer from FTM to RM. Thank you! Same interest here because of the ease with which an evidence-based tree can be developed on Ancestry. I have explored this on and off over the last couple of years and it is neither easy nor nice nor have I come up with a best practice. I'm on the verge of experimenting with getting the UID hidden in RM brought out to a custom fact or REF# fact, manually copying these to FTM to sync them up to the Ancestry tree. Then, except for people new to the tree, the next export from FTM would have the UID for each person in a fact. I would import the GEDCOM to a new database, process it with SQLite to put the fact UID in place of the hidden UID and then import to or File Compare with my working database. Because the working and intermediate databases have matching UID's, File Compare readily pairs the identical people and ShareMerge is enabled. So goes the theory... the devil is in the details. I daresay these are citations that were imported with people from Ancestry or some other GEDCOM source and that they are evidence for the Preferred Name when there are multiple names. See http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/Citations+Invisible+Revealed for a more detailed explanation and tools in RMtrix or in SQLite to expose them to your control. Hi: Am taking advantage of the cold and snow to do some 'clean up' on my Sources & Citations .. Not my strong point to start!!! I have census sources for various years that were accidentally 'mixed together' and I have been going thru and correcting those, putting them into the correct CENSUS YEAR source. Now that I've finished that I notice the original source (where they had gotten mixed together) has 'remnants' still there under citations like below: Brodeau, Jane (Name) 1920 census-Marlboro, MA Fitzgerald, Mary (Name) 1930 census All the ones reflected citations for births, marriages, residences, occupations, etc., and they have been removed from this list .. It appears that only the NAME citations are 'stuck' but when I click on a NAME there shows 'no source' on the screen for me to fix or remove. If there is a way to break software, I will find it! Anyone have any idea how to remove these NAME citations under the above circumstances? Pat
go to Reports, Lists, Birthday & Anniversary List, Create Report, Select Options & Generate Report. You may print only Marriage that will show the years of marriage at the end of each line. Hope this will help. I'm new to RM and I would like to create a report showing how long a couple was married. Nothing fancy. Once someone puts me down the right path I should be able to go from there. Thanks for the assistance. mike =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
The SQLite script that produces a list of "years married" is now available at http://sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.wikispaces.com/Marriages%2C+Length+of Tom > On Feb 16, 2015, at 12:29 PM, Tom Holden <[email protected]> wrote: > > That report shows the number of years since the marriage event, not how long the marriage lasted. The RM report says this year is the 103rd anniversary of the marriage event. > > Tom > >> On Mon, Feb 16, 2015 at 9:40 AM, kenpontius via <[email protected]> wrote: >> go to Reports, Lists, Birthday & Anniversary List, Create Report, Select Options & Generate Report.
