I have found the same problem with the spell checker. It is adding slow or something. Once I close out the session it seems to find the word and not ask again, but any new words it doesn't know, it asks. 1 Everytime you create or restorer a database it will change numbers unless you ask it to maintain the same numbers. 2 Stop what you are doing and go to an older backup and restore. View it to see how bad it looks. IF bad too delete it and that backup. 3 Forget numbers for now. Get you a good working database. You can ask it to keep the numbers when restoring. Use a different name for your database each timed you do these restores. You will lose some work, but from what I am seeing (blind) you have one person as his own Father, Grandfather and possibly 3 generations more.IN SHORT, A MESS. 4 Once you get a working database you feel is good, then back this up with its new name. Getting rid of the backups you know are bad will leave you some possible good ones. 5 Work only in the new good database, Not sure why you are restoring each session. RM will open the last database you were working on if you indicate that is what you want under Tools/File. 6 If you have been restoring on top of an older database than that was your problem. These are best suggestions I have. Hows far back you need to go is in question, but take your time. Time spent now will save problems later. 7 If you want to restore again to check if current one is better, USE A NEW NAME. Also each database and backup is dated by RM for you. Database at the bottom of screen; Backups in the name. 8 You can open the 2nd database side by side with current one, either by having 2 databases side by side or using RM 7's new "database compare"' 9 GOOD LUCK! We all have done something like that at one time or another. Jon On Sat, Feb 21, 2015 at 11:28 AM, Pat McGrath via < [email protected]> wrote: > HELP! HELP! I think I've gone back and restored to a GOOD database, but no idea what I did the break my original one!!!! All was well (as far as I know) when I backed up late last night. Always start by doing a 'restore' in the morning . then started adding info and making corrections to Nelson and Emma. Emma has a possible different name so added an 'alt name' .. Nelson appeared to be a dup so merged him with the other Nelson w/no wife. In my original database Nelson was #9218 .. Suddenly switching to a pedigree view I noticed I have 5 GENERATIONS of Nelson & Emma ---- each being the parents of Nelson and not just NELSON himself . hope you can picture that pedigree! Suddenly Nelson is now #10214. Created a gedcom and imported it to a new database .. Still 5 GENERATIONS of them . Nelson now #10139. Had no error messages doing the gedcom and no problem (it appeared) in importing that gedcom .. Would assume it was not corrupt based on that! Restored last night's backup again ... ONLY one NELSON & EMMA and Nelson is #9218 ...... Cautiously think I'm ok except for losing 2 hours of entering from this morning, but can anyone tell me WHAT HAPPENED and/or what I DID ????? Pat
You might check out this list of free clipboard programs. http://download.cnet.com/windows/clipboard-software/ I had one a few years ago that would save a certain number of clips and I could choose which one I wanted to paste into RM. I cannot remember the name of that program, but this list might be of help to you. Joy On 2/20/2015 9:11 PM, Ronald D. Maybe that is something that could be added to the bucket list of features for a future version of RM. Perhaps there could also be a brief personal description field as well, for the kind of thing that I now add to the general notes field, but it would be good to have in a separate field that one could chose to print that line out in reports - descriptions like "Salesman of Toledo, Ohio", "Farmer of 40 acres in Ashton, Devon". Then you could choose to include that, or the full biography, or both in reports. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: [email protected]
A couple of minor issues have popped up as I try to update my RM database. 1. It looks like the spelling checker requires you to add the same words in multiple fields. That is, when a new word shows, I click Add, but the same word in another field requires me to repeat the process. The spell checker seems to use a separate dictionary for each field. Has anyone else experienced this? 2. Often, I use the same Citation(s) for several people and/or for several facts. Is there a way to save multiple citations to a clipboard so that I can select from them without having to memorize/paste, go back to another person to pick another citation, memorize/paste etc.? Is there a list of citations used in the database? I built my RM website. I have many media items tagged to a "person" and not a "fact" because they are general. I cannot find them on my website - only the photos under facts. How do I view these under "person" on the website? Shouldn't they show up on the "Individual Details" page? You could tag a document file as a media item (type "file") to the person. Whenever you open it from RM, the program that is associated with it in Windows will open it. If you are doing essays for multiple people, it might be smart to add a custom, private fact, say "MyEssay" to each person and tag each document accordingly. That way you can search for these people using RootsMagic Explorer, create a Named a Group of them, etc. Tom > On Feb 20, 2015, at 11:53 AM, Ted Meikle via <[email protected]> wrote: > > RootsMagic's Personal Historian: > https://www.rootsmagic.com/Personal-Historian/ > > Ted Meikle >> On 2/20/2015 9:38 AM, Leslie Anderson via wrote: >> Is there a feature in (or a location in ) RM6 where you can store a *draft * >> about an individual? >> >> I don't mean individual items or notes but something more like the >> beginnings of a coherent essay or article about the target ancestor? >> >> Thank you. >> Leslie >> >> >> =================================== >> RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ >> http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS >> WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > =================================== > RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS > WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I agree with Dora on 'keep them' somehow .... It's been such a treasure finding letters in Brian's relatives things from late 1900s and my stepmom has all the letters my dad wrote to her during World War II. Although she has copied a few and read me a few there are some she said 'wait until I'm gone' which is when they all come to me!!!!!!! I can't believe how old that make them (ha ha) but what a treasure knowing they are all there!!!!! With a series of letters I came across years ago, I transcribed them (highlighted or underlined the pertinent info) and filed them away. Created a source using 'interview' which I explained what it truly was in the source. Maybe something similar would work.
