What do RM users enter when they find 2 census with the birthdate 2 years apart? I entered this as 1792/93 instead of having 2 separate entries for the date. If I have 2 separate entries, sometimes it doesn't show a date at all. And as I discovered yesterday when I tried to "Compare" 2 databases, this date ended up being March 1792 which is not what I meant. Betty
Wow!. That is so cool, Bruce. I was hoping for something like this to make it easier. Thanks. And thanks, Sue Maxwell. Your suggestion wasn’t bad, just a little more time-consuming. What about the publisher feature? Reports>Publisher. Start a new book and name it with the ancestor's surname. Create a chapter for that ancestor. Add a text page, typing in the ancestor's full name for the subject, or something relevant to help identify the contents. If you ever decide to actually create a book, the essays can be easily incorporated. > From: Leslie Anderson via <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Friday, February 20, 2015 11:38 AM > Subject: [RMagic] Is there a "write as you go along" feature? > > Is there a feature in (or a location in ) RM6 where you can store a *draft * > about an individual? > > I don't mean individual items or notes but something more like the > beginnings of a coherent essay or article about the target ancestor? > > Thank you. > Leslie >

Vince, what you are trying to do is not easy to accomplish in RootsMagic, if you want more than one family. When you get to your "step 4", "descendants including spouses" is created from ONE single person who is highlighted, rather than everyone that you have already checked. Once you have that ONE person highlighted then the NEXT button will create the data and then let you give that group a name. Laurie, unfortunately, this is another one of those "age" issues that cannot be done within RootsMagic. I suppose you could narrow the field by creating a group for everyone who is deceased and who has no marriage fact. Then you would have to scroll down that list and visually look for those that died at a young age. Hi Listers, I am trying to create a focus group for a single family and am having no luck. I can't seem to be able to ma,e the group, therefore I can't manipulate it because I never gets formed. Here are the steps I've taken. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong : 1. I select the Group button from the Index Sidebar. The Group Sidebar comes up. 2. There are no groups listed. I select the Group button (top right in sidebar) and Named Group Window comes up. It's empty. 3. I select New. I get the Select People Window. I make my selections. 4. At this point, I click on the Mark Group Button, and select Descendents including spouses. So far, I have not named the group nor have I been asked to name the group. At this point, I don't know what to do. If I hit Next, I'm told it can't find a match. So Next is not what I thought it was. I don't know what to do next. Did I do something wrong, leave out a step. I have found that color coding those who died young helps me when I’m looking at a long list of children born to a couple. What I need is a list of those who died before the age of 19, but I can’t figure out how to do it. Does anyone know if that’s possible? TIA. Laurie Nelson
I'm not sure whether you're asking about recording specific bits of information from your cousin's many emails or recording the emails as sources. If it's the former, I think your proposal to excerpt (or abstract) the pertinent parts is practical and appropriate for situations where you want to quote or paraphrase what your cousin wrote, provided you have his/her permission to do so and you credit his/her email as your source. However, since you're dealing with a large volume of information, you might prefer--at least in some cases--simply to cite a specific email as a source for a particular fact that you enter in RootsMagic. (For example, a residence fact, a death date or place, etc.) If you're asking about recording the emails as sources, I'd suggest using the source template for "Email, personal, privately held, filed by collection." If you don't want to use all of the fields, you can copy the template and change it to suit your needs. Treating that cousin's emails as a collection and using the source details fields for information that varies from one citation to another will save you a lot of time and repetitive typing. That source template is based on Elizabeth Shown Mills' Evidence Explained. If you still have questions about citing the emails after studying the template, I recommend searching the archives at her web site at https://www.evidenceexplained.com/ for similar questions. While you're there, be sure to read "QuickLesson 19: Layered Citations Work Like Layered Clothing," which you can access from the home page. If you need more help, log in to the forums and post a question on the one for citation issues. Maybe that is something that could be added to the bucket list of features for a future version of RM. Perhaps there could also be a brief personal description field as well, for the kind of thing that I now add to the general notes field, but it would be good to have in a separate field that one could chose to print that line out in reports - descriptions like "Salesman of Toledo, Ohio", "Farmer of 40 acres in Ashton, Devon". Then you could choose to include that, or the full biography, or both in reports. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: [email protected] =================================== RM list Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/ROOTSMAGIC-USERS/ http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=ROOTSMAGIC-USERS WISH LIST: http://www.rootsmagic.com/forums/ BLOG: http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com

Betty, I wrote a blog post a month or so ago that tells you how you can get your Ancestry data down using FTM and then bringing it into RootsMagic. That is only happening when you are spell checking and find multiple uses of that same name in one note field, OR, when you are trying to do a global spell check, right? If so, that's because you haven't completed a "function" yet, so it has not saved to the actual dictionary yet. Corruption is in the eye of the beholder... The Database Tools and Export will catch certain kinds of corruption that affect the structure of the database but not errors in the data that are the result of user decisions and actions. The Problem Search tool helps to find many of the latter but it does not report a person linked to himself as parent (it may report it as "Father 0 years old when person was born"). And it is very easy to link a person to himself as a Parent - RootsMagic does not challenge the validity of this action (I think it should). Do you run Problem Search globally? Do you have Problem Alerts enabled in Tools > File Options? Tom On Sat, Feb 21, 2015 at 3:32 PM, Pat McGrath <[email protected]> wrote: > Very, very frequently!!!! Very, very frequently!!!! I have never had it say anything except OK ….. Any idea if the ability to create or not create a gedcom if the database is corrupt is correct???? Anyone??? IS there ANY way to determine (before it’s way too late) to discover a corrupt database? Restoring a database from a backup has no effect on the Record Numbers and there is no option as Jon suggests in his #1, #3 to maintain the same numbers when creating or restoring a database. The only time you have the option to "Preserve record numbers" is when you import a GEDCOM into a new, empty database. One can only guess at what happened but you obviously had two or more Nelsons because you merged #9218 and, presumably, #10214 with the latter set as Primary. I would suggest that the scramble had nothing to do with the addition of the Alt Name fact to Emma and everything to do with the merging. Perhaps the second Nelson had the unwanted linkages or perhaps your database was already corrupted in some way. Do you regularly run the Database Tools on it, especially Check Database Integrity? Use a different name for your database each timed you do these restores. You will lose some work, but from what I am seeing (blind) you have one person as his own Father, Grandfather and possibly 3 generations more.IN SHORT, A MESS. 4 Once you get a working database you feel is good, then back this up with its new name. Getting rid of the backups you know are bad will leave you some possible good ones. 5 Work only in the new good database, Not sure why you are restoring each session. RM will open the last database you were working on if you indicate that is what you want under Tools/File. 6 If you have been restoring on top of an older database than that was your problem. These are best suggestions I have. Hows far back you need to go is in question, but take your time. Time spent now will save problems later. 7 If you want to restore again to check if current one is better, USE A NEW NAME. Also each database and backup is dated by RM for you. Database at the bottom of screen; Backups in the name. 8 You can open the 2nd database side by side with current one, either by having 2 databases side by side or using RM 7's new "database compare"' 9 GOOD LUCK! We all have done something like that at one time or another. Jon On Sat, Feb 21, 2015 at 11:28 AM, Pat McGrath via < [email protected]> wrote: > HELP! As I was going through some of these problems I noticed that if you use a nick name that it showed up in the index as an alternate name, whereas if you typed the nick name in parenthesis in the name line it did not. For what it is worth Em -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pat McGrath via Sent: Saturday, February 21, 2015 12:29 PM To: 'RootsMagic Users List ' Subject: [RMagic] 5 of SAME person/couple showing !!!!! HELP! I think I've gone back and restored to a GOOD database, but no idea what I did the break my original one!!!! All was well (as far as I know) when I backed up late last night. Always start by doing a 'restore' in the morning . then started adding info and making corrections to Nelson and Emma. Emma has a possible different name so added an 'alt name' .. Nelson appeared to be a dup so merged him with the other Nelson w/no wife. In my original database Nelson was #9218 .. Suddenly switching to a pedigree view I noticed I have 5 GENERATIONS of Nelson & Emma ---- each being the parents of Nelson and not just NELSON himself . hope you can picture that pedigree! Suddenly Nelson is now #10214. Created a gedcom and imported it to a new database .. Still 5 GENERATIONS of them . Nelson now #10139. Had no error messages doing the gedcom and no problem (it appeared) in importing that gedcom .. Would assume it was not corrupt based on that! Restored last night's backup again ... ONLY one NELSON & EMMA and Nelson is #9218 ...... Cautiously think I'm ok except for losing 2 hours of entering from this morning, but can anyone tell me WHAT HAPPENED and/or what I DID ????? 1. I don't understand how that is physically possible. The spell checker uses one file with the (iirc) .adu extension. You can choose one of a few files, e.g., American, British English... 2. Mem/Paste supports only one citation; there have been requests to expand this capability to multiple citations. An outboard Clipboard is not a solution.
