    1. Re: [RMagic] RM3 and dropbox
    2. Virginia Blakelock via
    3. Database files like RootsMagic, TMG, Legacy should never be synced with Dropbox (and similar products). Only backup files should be stored in Dropbox. Your various Rootsmagic database files are interacting and exchanging data as you work in RM. It is easy for a bit of data to be dropped while syncing, causing corruption to RM. If it has not happened yet, it will. 3. Lou, I don't want to. 3. Lou, That’s not what I am asking about. I used to enter place names that way, and am now in a very long process of changing 5,000 or 6,000 place names over to using place detail fields for their designed purpose and have no wish to go back. Also there can be several different "Detail spots" within any one of the Places such as listing several cemeteries in a given city, twnsp, or County. Just MY peculiar way to do things. 3. I want to create a publication with family group sheets for all the families descending from one of my uncles to share with a cousin before a reunion this summer. I know how to do that. The cousin and I live in different states and she lives in the same county as my sister who has the same database as I do and the same version of rootsmagic. But my sister has no experience creating this publication. The cousin is somewhat computer fearful. I have 5 existing publications but cannot find the file from which these publications are created. I want to create the publication and send the publication to my sister so she can sit with my cousin and update the family group sheets and print those with blanks to give to relatives to fill out. I know how to send a PDF file with the current data but not how to send the file that created the publication so my sister can update it. Dan

Did you try with a second flash drive or put the flash drive in a different usb slot? There must be some quirk with the computer you are using. I have not tried a cd in years, so cannot comment on that process. 3. I've used Dropbox for years to store my database so I can work on it and/or display it from any of my computers, tablets, or smartphones. I've never had any problem. I usually backup to my home computer simply because it's easiest. Now and then I will copy the latest backup to Dropbox. That's probably overkill since Dropbox keeps the last 30 days of changes so the user can get them in case of a problem. I can't think of any other way to make files as safe and available. Version 7 has made using Dropbox even easier. 3. I'm coming to RM from TMG. I never used Dropbox, but I've seen warnings posted on the TMG list over and over again that you should never back up your genealogy program to Dropbox. You are asking for data corruption. Go to the TMG lists to read all the explanations. 3. David I forgot to add - I don't know why you could not do the same as I suggested in REVERSE - That is using your Cemetery as the PRIMARY Place and the City, Twnsp or Co., as the detail in order to detail all the folks buried in one cemetery for example. again, Good luck Lou ________________________________ From: David E. Now approaching 58,000 individuals, each entered one fact at a time, I am starting to realize that some of my place details are entered twice because not only did the source state them inconsistently, but I did not catch them each at time of entry. With a place name entry, RM suggests a currently entered entry for you making is pretty easy to avoid duplication of places, but there is no such feature with place details that I know of. I don't know if such a feature is even possible given the structure of our place and/or place detail names, but speaking only for myself it would sure save me some time going back and correcting work already done fixing duplicate entries. I've even tried to find a report to list all place details in alphabetical order, so I can check it by county or some such every now and then, but I'm unable to think of any list, report or tool that effectively works for something like this. I welcome any ideas from anyone on this. Maybe the RootsMagician can come up with the means of using the "smart entry" tool (or whatever it is called) currently doing wonderful things with place name entries, and modify it to create one to work effectively in place details but I fear that may not be feasible. :-( David E. 3. David Using your examples - This is the way I enter them in my Place list with details: Union Township, Clinton Co., Ohio [and then IN Place Details] Sugar Grove Cemetery Wilmington, Clinton Co., Ohio [and then IN Place Details] Sugar Grove Cemetery Clinton Co., Ohio [and then IN Place Details] Sugar Grove Cemetery In that way I cut down on the number of places that are listed and can use them multiple times with or w/o the detail such as using the place only for the place of b, m or d and using the place w the detail as the bur. place for an example. Also there can be several different "Detail spots" within any one of the Places such as listing several cemeteries in a given city, twnsp, or County. Just MY peculiar way to do things. Good luck with your reorganization. Love, Lou Louis E. Love, O.D. From: David E. 3. I always do backup when I finish working and then restore when I begin again to be SURE I am in the latest database!!! I only use ONE database for all my folks. So when I finished working last night I backed up (to Dropbox as usual to be accessible from anywhere). A few minutes ago I just wanted to LOOK AT a person for something else I was doing on the same computer so I didn't do a restore, just open the RECENT database !!!!! I noticed when I went to create the pedigree chart (same thing I had done last night) that the title was an OLD TITLE and not the one I had created last night!!!! Did some further checking and found that work I had done last night WAS NOT IN MOST RECENT ... Must admit I am confused and concerned!!!! Rarely do I use MOST RECENT but occasionally when I know for SURE I was working on the same computer just a bit ago 'assuming' that would be the snapshot/my most recent database .. appears that is NOT the case. Please clarify and let me know what I am doing wrong! Obviously if I have lost data there is no way of figuring that out now!!!! Pat

    2. Ronald D. Doctor via
    3. BRUCE: There is a serious problem with Dropbox in RM 7.04.0. I have been using Dropbox as the place where I store both my data files and my backup files. RM IS NOT PICKING UP THE DATA FILE THAT IS IN DROPBOX. And, yes, I have designated the proper Dropbox folder in Tools/Program Options/Folders. I've been doing some heavy updates of my RM database, including being meticulous about entering sources and associating documentary media with each fact. But for the past two weeks I've been kicking myself about the "errors" I've been making. These errors have been most apparent in the media attachments. I keep finding records that have no media attached even though I could swear I had entered them. I attributed these errors to my advancing age and "senior moments". Pat McGrath's message today got me thinking that maybe it's not me. 1. So, this morning, before opening RM, I checked the dates stamps on my Dropbox data and backup files. They showed the correct times that I did my backup last night and when I closed RM. 2. When I opened RM this morning, I checked on the work I had done last night. NONE of the changes I had made last night were there. I had saved my notes about the work I did, so I was fairly certain that the missing entries had been made, but like Pat I found all the work I had done was missing. 3. I restored my backup from Dropbox and all the missing entries were in the restored file. In a way, I was relieved. The problem is not my senior moments. It is RM. RM's Backup is working properly, but RM is not picking up the proper data file from Dropbox. This is a serious problem. I've wasted dozens of hours re-inputting data that already had been input. And, who knows how much data people have lost because they assumed RM was working properly and didn't do a backup restore before entering more data. BRUCE: THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS AN URGENT FIX!
