Emery, I would back up off site. I use Mosy. Start up is free unless you have lots of material. The reason for going off site is that you have a hard drive failure, house burns down or your computer gets stolen, etc. your data is safe and can be transfer to another computer. RM TO GO is not intended to be as working database, but a transfer program. You can use RM on your Flash Drive by installing it there and inserting the reg key to open up the extras of RM. You cannot backup RM TO GO like you would the database on the desktop. I had overlooked this in m,y last instructions. Sorry! Have you tried backing up to your computer’s main hard drive? If that works, it might indicate that RM is functioning correctly, and the problem is the USB ports and/or drives. If that doesn’t work either, there may be an RM issue. Also check with Windows Explorer to confirm that the USB drives are correctly mounted in the file system and ready to use (i.e. you can see the drive as a lettered drive). ----------------------------- Researching Surnames Elk, Goldstein, Kasin (Kisensky), Philipson, Reich, Sax, Schwartz, Ureen, Wershub (Warshup) ----------------------------- Michael Reich 1916 Deere Lane Glendale Heights, IL 60139 [email protected] blog: www.mike-reich.blogspot.com > On Mar 1, 2015, at 3:02 PM, Emery St Cyr via <[email protected]> wrote: > > Ok, I tried a different usb port and still the data recently added data will > not move to the flash drive. David, I have the same problem and am working on cleaning it up. I don’t know if this is what you want, but it’s what works for me. First, when I find a duplication of Cemeteries as you have, I edit them one at a time: Edit place Split place/details - I split out all text except the county, state, country and enter that in the Place Detail box. With the county name now coming first, I click on the name of the county that is already in the format I want, then click on Merge and select the entry I just split. I repeat with each of the cemeteries with multiple places, then click on place details and merge all the cemeteries, making sure any city, township, etc, details are in the final selection. One cemetery I merged today was listed 5 ways, and I merged them by merging place details. I figure I’ll finish merging places sometime in the year 2020. :) Good luck! Jim, what operating system are you running, and how large a hard drive and how much RAM do you have? I run the current version of Rootsmagic in Windows 7, on a 320 G hard drive (less than half used), with 4 G of RAM, 3.2 G of which Windows 7 32 bit recognizes. I have an I3 dual core machine. Rootsmagic finds things instantaneously. There are still people running Windows XP on a half gig or a gig of RAM, and an 80 G hard drive, and the system barely moves. Older machines are slower, but it is possible that a couple of simple upgrades would dramatically speed up your computer. If by chance you are running Vista, I think it is slow by nature. I let this problem percolate in the back of my mind for another 8 hrs and solved it myself. The "Publication" is a list of commands and is stored in the database. (Though there may be a file for it.) The existing publications in my database are included in the backups. So there is no problem. My sister gets new backups regularly and restores them to her computer. But my sister has no experience creating this publication. The cousin is somewhat computer fearful. I have 5 existing publications but cannot find the file from which these publications are created. I want to create the publication and send the publication to my sister so she can sit with my cousin and update the family group sheets and print those with blanks to give to relatives to fill out.
