Pat that's one one the spots where I use the est or abt date for a fact. If I can find dates of birth for children, I'll subtract a year and use that as an est marriage date. Just my way to record my folks. Good hunting, Love, Lou Louis E. Love. Similarly if I do not have a death date the BURIAL will print on those same reports. BUT, if I don't have a MARRIAGE, but I DO HAVE a 'marriage contract' date ... THAT does not appear at least on the screens for the family . IS there a 'replacement' fact type that would print / show in this case??? Hello, For the past four or five years I have slowly been transferring 30 years of ongoing research from more than twenty 3-ring binders into Family Tree Maker, but for various reasons I became dissatisfied with that programme's performance, and after trying three alternatives I settled on RM6 last summer and recently upgraded to RM7. I currently have several hundred media pictures and maps of places, and where appropriate I have recently started to attach these to specific places rather than repeatedly attaching them to individual facts that include a reference to the same place. It would, however, seem that there is nothing in the Edit Screen to indicate whether there is an image or note attached to the place and that the only way to find out is to click on the Place List button. Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Personally I would like to see a positive indication or link displayed somewhere on the Edit Screen showing where media items or notes exist for a particular place. Regards Richard Harris
Yes, you are correct in that there is no place media flag or marker. There has been a request for that in the past, as I remember. However, I have a question for you. What would you do with media items that have nothing to do with a location/place? If I were to run a report for one family I could end up with thousands of media items attached that have nothing to do with that family. Sue > On Mar 4, 2015, at 10:30 PM, Richard W. The dialog box does not seem to give me an option to select part of my file and tries to do the entire file which is too large to be accepted. I have 2 sites that were transferred from RM6. Pay, since you don't want to keep the active database in dropbox, then I'd probably suggest that you just keep a copy of your backup in Dropbox. Just tell RM to point the backup folder to your dropbox folder. Leave your active database where you have it. Remember only use the rmgc file. You may never need the backup file - ever. I also have my backups 'off-site' using Dropbox which is free for some amount of space which I have come nowhere near using! I do clear out backups periodically so as not to accumulate too many! Select the flash drive to use as your back up and a folder if needed. Click backup. hen completed go to the flash drive and open the folder if you used one. our backup should be there with today's date as part of the extension. If in the above process no space remains on the flash drive; select another. On older computer and some flash drives, you cannot remove them without using the "Safely Remove Hardware" button. Not using this button will lock the flash drive or the USB port or both. If this occurs a reboot MIGHT reset IT/THEM; However if the reset doesn't work, a TECH would be required. As CD It must be a R/W (READ/WRITE) with space remaining and not "CLOSED". Closing a R/W CD will effectively prevent additional writing to that CD. Also your CD drive must be a R/W drive as well. Hope this helps you or someone else. I have gone thru this myself, but may have missed something in my explanation. Best method if you are unsure is to use the File/Backup and backup to a folder on the desktop. You can copy the backup to either one of these other locations if all is ok there and then remove from desktop if needed. Now that I look there, I think that IS one of the things I HAD DONE before …. But this database still had them all checked! Will make a note to check periodically and see if they STAY UNCHECKED ! That is the correct email address for posting to the RootsMagic-Users list. For anyone that might have been following this thread about my multiple problems (at the bottom of this email), I wanted to let you know that Bruce did reply to me as follows in the middle of this message. I checked as he suggested and DID find multiple copies of my database on my computer in a folder marked DATABASE under RootsMagic on my MAIN computer and also one in a DATABASE folder in Dropbox. I have cleared all .rmgc files out of their current locations and into a file/folder on the MAIN computer marked OLD_DATABASES (which I was keeping in case the world comes to an end and I need to resurrect really old things along the path). I did, also, clean the .rmgc files (deleting them) so there are only two that reflect when I first started using RootsMagic and another which the name identified as possibly corrupt should I need to reproduce something within it. My question NOW is ----- WHERE is the BEST (fast, safe, etc) place to store THE ACTIVE DATABASE? In a folder in documents on my MAIN computer .. Or in a folder within Dropbox on my MAIN computer???? Opinions and reasons GREATLY APPRECIATED! Pat =========================== Reply from Bruce ============================= I suspect you have more than one database, possibly in different folders. 1. Backup and restore only zip and unzip the database, so backup / restore can't lose, change, or modify the data since the database isn't even opened or touched. 2. Again, backup / restore cannot touch, modify or change data. 3. Once again, it is impossible for the backup / restore to modify the database in any manner. Do File > Search for files and then search for RootsMagic files to see if you have more than one database that you are switching between. =========================== PROBLEMS ================================ 1) Husband and wife suddenly became the husband's parents back for 5 generations between when I backed up at night and restored in the morning 2) Worked a LOT on my sources, putting 15-20 source types into the favorites so I could re-use them quickly, had them GONE after the backup/restore process!!!! 3) Found out that the database I had just restored after the backup last night DID NOT MATCH the one I open in MOST RECENT and it should be the same database / same name, etc. I work on two computers a lot, but actually have not been when the above has happened!!!!! I ALWAYS backup when I get out of my database. File options set to dropbox with database_name_date to which I had a -A or -B or -M depending on how many times I work and get off each day. Whenever I go back into RM during the day I restore from -A or -B or -M depending on which was the most recent backup!!! I would think that would catch anything and everything .. but stuff is happening and I'm losing faith in both RootsMagic and myself ..
Trying to see if I have the correct email address. JD
Hi: Is there a way to make a 'user-designed' fact type PRIVATE so it stays that way whenever / wherever it is used rather than having to check the PRIVATE box each time it is use? Remember that if you backup to a flash drive, it like other media can fail. At the least I would rotate between two different flash drives. For myself I regularly backup to a C:\RM7data directory that I setup through program options on the computer and a flashdrive. Margaret
