Em, The transfer process is almost the same goiing to 7 as it was to 6. I don't think you'll have a problem. If you download the software it should be the current version but if you use a CD copy there will most likely be updates. Usually the most recent update will take you from wherever you are to the current version. Drew, thank you for your response. I was scared as hell when I wasn't able to stop that WinZip update. I ended up going to TrendMicro where they have a program that checks your computer and mine was virus free. It must have been a coincidence that I was doing the email for RootsMagic when it happened. I resisted upgrading at first as I tend to wait a couple months for most any new software for the kinks to be worked out. I probably installed RM7 two months ago, and since I do a lot of transcribing, have probably added a couple thousand names. All seems to be working well. I can comfortably recommend RM7 to anyone. Getting upgrades works just the same as it did with previous versions. Bruce does a wonderful job with RM. With this version I like the fact we can use "by" for a date modifier. I had asked for that several verisons back, so it could have been added prior to version 7 <grin> I have been having fun trying to solve some of my loose ends now that we can query "FamilySearch". Sometimes the generations get mixed up there, so one should always check their dates when going from one generation to the next. Thanks to Bruce for promptly helping by resetting my password and others who gave suggestions. I've logged in to the IPS Community and posted a wish on the RM wishlist and thanks to all for helping. I seem to have set the password enough years ago that I'd lost both my memory of what I'd used as well as the list containing it. Must now do better at recording and keeping handy my list of many passwords!! Thanks again. John Robbins
RootsMagic 7 can import a RM3 database directly, not open it, and converts the data into the RM7 format. No need to go through GEDCOM. Can I open an RM3 database with RM7? Or Do I have to create a GedCom with the RM3 program and import it into RM7? If I can open and RM3 database with RM7, will RM7 convert it from 3 to 7? . Jim Belanger NH State Representative Hollis, NH www.belangers.us

I'm leaving all of the messages on this email on purpose. I looked at this email title and wanted to open it completely because the title was something I wondered about. When it opened, another window opened too, WinZip Update. The "cancel" was greyed out and it wouldn't close even when I kept clicking on the X. Is anyone else having this problem too? BTW, I went to my Virus Protection and tried to update the virus & spyware but the connection failed. This is the only email I've opened - what the heck is going on???? I’m glad I discovered this before I did a lot of matching at FamilySearch. Maybe some of you already knew this, but I didn’t. I just discovered that when I choose a source at FamilySearch to match with one of my RootsMagic people, FamilySearch creates a separate source in RootsMagic for each source in FamilySearch that I accept. [I hope this is making sense.] So I now have a lot of individual sources that I didn’t realize I was getting. I could wind up with thousands of sources if I hadn’t discovered this. I ALWAYS have used more general sources, such as “1880 U.S. Census,” “1900 U.S. Census,” “Marriage Record,” “Cemetery Record,” etc. Then I put the details of that source, such as website, database name, etc., in the record for each individual person. In addition, I just found out that FamilySearch was adding the notes, such as the people listed in a census, to my family notes. Some people might be happy with that, but I’m not—totally. It will save me some typing, but it doesn’t give the full census record for each family member. It only gives the name, age, birthplace, & relationship of that person to the head of household. There is so much more important information in most censuses. Now that I know what FamilySearch is doing, I can use that data as a STARTING POINT ONLY. When I transcribe a census, I add ALL of the data to RootsMagic. The advantage to using FamilySearch, of course, is that I don’t have to go looking for all the sources that are available, but now that I know what happens, I will have to slow down and add each source and note individually, instead of allowing FamilySearch to do it. Laurie Nelson P.S. I didn’t watch the video about using FamilySearch matching. I assume it tells users this in the video.
Hi Pat As others have said, you haven't missed this feature in RM because it isn't there. There was some discussion of this issue on the RM7 forum a couple of months ago - see http://forums.rootsmagic.com/index.php?/topic/14740-sorting-source-names-in-the-citation-manager/ It's something that has been requested for many years. Underneath the Password field in the login screen is a link "I've forgotten my password". Click on that and see if you can get it reset that way. I've been a Family Origins and RootsMagic user and follower of this group since back in the '90s. I know that to wish an enhancement of RM I'm supposed to go to the Wish List which is in the Forums of the IPS Community. I'm always flummoxed by that because my e-mail address which has always been the same isn't allowable with logging nor do I have any record or memory of using a username or password at IPS Community, yet to sign in I am to use my e-mail address which it says it can't accept as it is already being used. The big problem is that I see no place in that IPS C to redress this. Can someone here explain how IPS works and how to contact its administrator? I end up never going to that community because of this. I do have some suggestions and wishes but can't get to RM through this vehicle. Would appreciate any help someone here can offer, either on-line or off-line to me. Thanks. John Robbins
