    3. My suggestion would be to turn off WEBROOT before installing RootsMagic updates. Then turn it back on. If is too much trouble then get another antivirus program. I had that type of problem with my flash drives and my antivirus program, but now they are working well together. Sometimes updates are not yet compatible until the other updates too. Tell WEBROOT the problem. The problem is theirs not RootsMagic. They will want it to work so you don't go to another antivirus program. On Tue, Mar 10, 2015 at 9:32 AM, John M. For instance, Ancestry.com trees and Family Tree Maker can theoretically exchange data seamlessly because they are under the control of the same programmers, but the same cannot be said regarding RootsMagic and trees from other companies. And because sources are managed by different source templates in different programs, what is going to happen in many cases is that sources imported from other programs will be imported into RootsMagic as free-form citations. (There are no doubt exceptions to this.) Having said all that, the following data formats should import into RootsMagic with issues as minimal as practical: Family Tree Maker (version 16 and earlier) PAF (versions 2.x and later) Family Origins (versions 4 and later) Legacy (versions 2 and later) TMG GEDCOM 5.5 FamilySearch Family Tree Drew Smith

    3. I'm giving a presentation in early April on RM to our genealogy society's computer interest group. I've been a user for a while, so feel okay about the basics. What I don't remember is about importing from other programs as a new RM user. I'm sure there'll be lots of new RM users as a result of my talk :-) and that's a sure question. Where on the RM site is the best place to refresh my memory about converting other programs into RM? What will import seamlessly, sources conversion, etc. Thanks for any guidance, Kathy

    1. [RMagic] Rootsmagic runs well in Ubuntu with Wine
    2. Dora Smith via
    3. For whoever wants to know, Rootsmagic 7 runs perfectly in Ubuntu 14.04 (current version) when installed via Wine. Wine is software that emulates the Microsoft Windows file system and supplies libraries and so forth. Ubuntu has grown up; rivals Mac X in appearance and has gotten far more user friendly. It has Linux versions of most things one would want software for, such as two free office suites. One has one's pick of desktops that work with Ubuntu; Unity and Gnome 3 are the most attractive with them, and I recommend Gnome as Unity seems to have stability issues; they may possibly have to do with video compatibility and hardware acceleration; I tested that idea only in Gnome. (You have to choose not to run hardware acceleration.) EVERYTHING ran with Linux generic drivers; the video, the sound, the Internet, AND the laser printer; I've NEVER had that happen in windows. Most hardware except the very newest is just supported. I think on my regular computer I did have to install a driver for my video card. Many things can now be done through the graphical interface that formerly had to be done in Terminal, though it's often easier to do it in Terminal (which is not hard). You do have to add a fair amount of functionality to the operating system in tools and tweaks, however. There is a free little book in pdf format that provides a good introduction to Ubuntu all over the web. The software manager contains an older version of it. I got my favorite games - a solitaire game, Majong, and two jigsaw games, to run in Wine or PlayonLinux (which runs on Wine but adds virtual drives). There are good image editing and web editing tools for Ubuntu. Yours, Dora Smith --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com

    3. I spoke with Tech Support this morning (heads up that I'd sent them an email) and that is exactly what they did ... unlink the first offending connection and all disappeared. That's pretty much what I had done when I found one of these a few weeks ago .... but my bigger questions were 1) what am I doing that created these (making the assumption that it was operator error and 2) is there any kind of a 'tool' in RM to help find loops like these. None of the people were duplicates with different ID numbers (checked that) ! Turns out THIS loop existed back in February 2014 and was not detected until I did a minor tweak on something today that put them in the visual pedigree screen!!!! Otherwise guess you never find these things and when I'm gone my kids will think I did a terrible job and not trust anything in the database! Fixed 'for now' ------ but MAY I REQUEST SUCH A Problem Identifier be added to tools or problem alerts PLEASE !!!! Do I have to submit that formally? Hi Pat, I don't think I have ever had triplicates, but I have occasionally over the years managed to get the generations mixed up, I think most often, by accidently making a person a child or a parent of the other. This tends to happen in merging families I have duplicated in my database in slightly different forms. First of all I unlink the offending generations. Then I do what is below if that does not seem to remedy the problems. When I do find a mess where people are children are parents and grandparents of each other (I am sure of my own creation), I write down the record numbers of the offending person or two, then carefully UNLINK ALL OF THE RELATIONSHIPS except perhaps the marriage. On paper I then remind myself of where I need to relink. After unlinking I REINDEX the database (under the file menu and database tools). It never hurts do to a series of backups - naming them something unique instead of writing them over each other. I have even gone so far in the past (maybe one one or two times in 10 years) to remove the offending person from the database, reindex, restart RM and the computer, and put the person back in. I don't ever remember where I could not solve the problem. As a last resort, you might make a gedcom after removing the offensive party, reimport that gedcom to a new database, then add the person or persons causing the problem. I think I have done that once in 15+ years. Over the years I have learned to use estimated dates frequently because it helps prevent mixing up people with the same names in different generations. Just recently I had, say a John Welton with wife Rebecca, for two generations and no dates. That for me is a disaster waiting to happen. Good luck, I'm sure you will get it all worked out eventually without losing data. Let us know what works for you. 3. One more question, if you please. I've upgraded to RM7. I have imported RM3 databases into a brand new database to replace the old. 1. I have several RM5 databases. When open one with RM7, it advises me on the changes it will make to upgrade to RM7. I'm OK with that. 2. My Question: If I have three (for example) databases in RM5 format; let's say Smith1, Smith2, and Smith3. I want to open Smith1 with RM7 and let it convert. Then, I want to import the data from Smith2 and Smith3 into it so I have a master Smith database. But, when I go to 'import" it only gives me the option of importing RM1 to RM3. How do I import RM5 into an existing RM7? . Jim Belanger NH State Representative Hollis, NH www.belangers.us

    2. Jon Czarowitz via
    3. You can download either the RM 7 Essentials or the version 7 update as these are the full version without the extras. Both require the code to open the full expanded version. The code will come in a followup email after purchasing RM 7. The CD if bought is mostly a backup if your computer crashes. It has a code on it that might be different from that in the email. Be sure to register your program. This puts your code in a online memory at RM. 3. Jim - I think I'm correct in addition to Bruce's explanation, that IF you want to merge the 3 files, you must either find a common ancestor in each file with whom you can "drag & drop" merger of everyone in the database OR create a gedcom to import into the one database. Bruce will correct me if I'm wrong. Love to all, Lou Louis E. How do I import RM5 into an existing RM7? . 3. RM1-3 are a completely different file format than RM4-7 (not just different fields, but different database engine). RM7 "imports" RM1-3 files, which means it has to create a new RM7 file and import the data from the RM1-3 file. This creates a new RM7 file and leaves the RM1-3 file intact. RM7 "converts" RM4-5 files, which means it just opens the existing file and makes changes to it to bring it up to the RM7 format. This means your RM4-5 file has been changed to RM7 format. If you want the RM4-5 file to remain intact you will need to make a copy (or backup) of it first to continue to use with RM4-5. RM7 "opens" RM6 files. They are the same format and can be opened in either version. - Bruce On Mon, Mar 9, 2015 at 9:11 AM, Jim Belanger via < [email protected]> wrote: > One more question, if you please. > > I've upgraded to RM7.
