If your intent is to be a detail list of known evidence, then you should enter a separate tag for each source since the data is slightly different (different effective dates). More commonly, the database is used as a summary of your conclusions, with the accumulation of the evidence provided by the sources, in which case, you have a single occupation and residence fact, with 10 sources (or more from other evidence) attached. The latter method will generate better output for most casual usage. -- Richard Damon
Robert- I'm a TMG user just beginning to learn RM, so I don't know if what I'm about to say applies or not. In TMG, I entered each and every residence and occupation mentioned in every document with a "-" in front of the sentence that would be produced. This caused the sentence not to print. Then I created a Residence Summary and Occupation Summary fact whereby I summarized the information into a readable format. If my ancestor changed jobs partway through his life, I could create another Occupation Summary fact and place it where I wanted it to go in the narrative. I preferred to enter each instance separately so it would be placed in the timeline of his life, but it made for boring narratives. Does anyone know if the same thing can be accomplished in RM? Sandy I have an ancestor who fathered 10 children with the same wife over 12 years, and I have now obtained the 10 birth certificates. Each states that he was a butcher and lived at the same place. Do people add 10 Occupation facts, each with a different source and 10 Residence facts, each with a different source to the one ancestor? I understand that philosophically / methodologically this is what should be done but doesn't such activity create a lot of clutter? Robert Salas (South Australia)
I would put the occupation only on the Father between years x - y. Use an occupation note that reference was noted on the 10 children's Birth Certificates as his occupation. I would also use a Family Residence between those same years. Use an residence note that reference was noted on the 10 children's Birth Certificates as the parents' residence. You actually have the capability to do it anyway you want. To me it depends on your goal. If you want to eventually pass on your family story then add enough to make it enjoyable to read. For example, "he resided in named city from 1900 to at least 1940 and he was a farmer throughout those years. ". You can document this with one residence fact and attach all sources. I like to source based on each person so they stand alone when running reports or when writing a story about a group of people or families. If you want to document every source for serious genealogists then list every residence, year, and occupation and provide every source. You can adjust each sentence any way you want. There is no philosophical or methodological reason to do this. Make one residence fact and one occupation fact, use a range for the dates, and attached all the sources to the consolidated facts. The birth certificates are primary and direct evidence of the birth of the individual. I would not use information from the birth certificate for the father's personal details. That information in considered secondary as the informant is unknown. Also, since it appears to be redundant it would, as you pointed out, "clutter" things. A caveat to that would be if you had conflicting information on the father's details and the birth certificates could corroborate already obtained information. Is there a PlaceFinder for Windows 8.1 ?
Hi Joan, I think you will be very pleased to step up to version 6. There were some problems with version 4 in that that I bought it and never used it -- the only version that I I never installed. I think it was due to the change in program engine (not a problem), but the fact it did not have all the reports of version 3 (if I am remembering correctly). Anyway, you don't have to even look at the new features if you don't want to use them. If you want to make use of the additional features when using FamilySearch, you might want to go ahead and get RM7. Otherwise, I have not noticed much difference in the features I regularly use. I never used it much either, not particularly specific with help === but there is a new version which is supposed to be better. Look for when and by whom the person was last edited. It could be that there was a duplicate, and someone combined tghem, and theb reference number changed. In RM 6 it is unfortunately not possible to edit the FamilySearch reference number in cases like that. Perhaps that has been fixed in RM 7. -- Steve Hayes E-mail: [email protected] Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Phone: 083-342-3563 or 012-333-6727 Fax: 086-548-2525

Joan - What I've found is that it appears as though the person has been moved or had other changes that exclude our match. I unmatch that person and then search for matches to relocate and re-match the person. Don't know if that's the "right" way to do it - but it works for me. I bet "The Roots Magician" has the solution at hand and will jump in. When dealing with pedigrees watch out for common ancestors that can make some multiple names come up.
