    3. I have several cases where I am descended from more than one child in a family because of cousins marrying, at least one in colonial America, some in Sicily, and some in France. There are probably others I don't know about. One of my DNA matches shows up as a close cousin, even though she is actually a 5th cousin. She is descended from 2 siblings through a marriage of 1st cousins and I am descended from 2 siblings of those 2 siblings through another 1st cousin marriage. I finally printed out a Family Group Sheet so that I had all the needed information and then deleted the person and re-entered the person and made all the connections with spouse, parents and children. 3. When you look at the names in the index is there a box in front of one of them? Yes means there is an alternate name. It can be removed in "Edit Person". If no then is there a 2 next to the person when in family list? A number can mean 2 or more marriages. The spouses should show in edit person. In the family listing clicking on the number will go from one spouse to the other or next one. Surely, that is far too general a statement? No doubt it will depend on the jurisdiction from which the birth certificate comes, but with certificates from England and Wales it is always clear who supplied the information, and it is rare indeed that the informant is not either the mother or the father of the child. Since it is information given within a very short time of the birth by somebody having first-hand knowledge how can it be anything other than primary data? I certainly understand the argument as it relates to a death such as a date of birth being supplied by an informant when registering a death, and I think this whole argument is a major reason why I have never seriously looked at becoming a professional genealogist. 3. Rootsmagic runs well on Ubuntu/ Debian based systems with atleast sometimes some fixes. Evidently the GDI+ bug is still with us in Rootsmagic 7. I've run Rootsmagic a number of times without seeming to have needed it, but possibly it was already installed for another reason or as part of some package I installed, and it could be a component of Zorin out of the box. Zorin is a debian-based package a bunch of college students put together and sell for $12.50. I found that every single thing they put in the package still had to be updated, which often meant reinstalling it, but since it does include Wine and Playonlinux it may also include GDI+. There are several other pieces of software that one needs to run Rootsmagic, most notably the Microsoft XML parser. I'm not too sure what it might need flash and IE for, and atleast the program itself is working without Flash installed. Winetricks couldn't install it. Flash does run on my Linux system. Come on, folks, it isn't like you haven't known for years that you need to include the GDI+ package on the install CD and web site download page for people running Mac and Linux, as it is no longer even part of the Microsoft operating system, apparently. And ditto the Microsoft XML parser, though I didn't get far enough before making these fixes to verify that an XML parser hasn't been added to the Rootsmagic package. You know, Microsoft is pretty much leaving the entire human race in the dust. It pretty much takes an outer space alien to like Windows 8 and I guess when Windows 8 auto-erases on that crowd they just run out and buy another laptop/ tablet/ personal communicator aka Star Trek or whatever with them Sesame Street colored tiles that even a child can't stand all over your screen. Now, like many people, I'm working hard at converting to Linux, for myself and for my family. Getting my genealogy software to work on Linux was a critical prerequisite. I put a complete writeup about it in tips and hints on the Rootsmagic web site; of course there is nothing on the Rootsmagic web site about it. http://forums.rootsmagic.com/index.php?/topic/15192-rootsmagic-7-runs-well-on-linux-ubuntu-1404-but-sometimes-needs-fixes/ Crossover, a Windows emulator for Mac and Linux that costs $50 and is supposed to be worth it, also has a fix for the GDI+ issue. Yours, Dora Smith -----Original Message----- From: Dora Smith via Sent: Monday, March 09, 2015 10:36 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [RMagic] Rootsmagic runs well in Ubuntu with Wine For whoever wants to know, Rootsmagic 7 runs perfectly in Ubuntu 14.04 (current version) when installed via Wine. Wine is software that emulates the Microsoft Windows file system and supplies libraries and so forth. Ubuntu has grown up; rivals Mac X in appearance and has gotten far more user friendly. It has Linux versions of most things one would want software for, such as two free office suites. One has one's pick of desktops that work with Ubuntu; Unity and Gnome 3 are the most attractive with them, and I recommend Gnome as Unity seems to have stability issues; they may possibly have to do with video compatibility and hardware acceleration; I tested that idea only in Gnome. (You have to choose not to run hardware acceleration.) EVERYTHING ran with Linux generic drivers; the video, the sound, the Internet, AND the laser printer; I've NEVER had that happen in windows. Most hardware except the very newest is just supported. I think on my regular computer I did have to install a driver for my video card. Many things can now be done through the graphical interface that formerly had to be done in Terminal, though it's often easier to do it in Terminal (which is not hard). You do have to add a fair amount of functionality to the operating system in tools and tweaks, however. There is a free little book in pdf format that provides a good introduction to Ubuntu all over the web. The software manager contains an older version of it. I got my favorite games - a solitaire game, Majong, and two jigsaw games, to run in Wine or PlayonLinux (which runs on Wine but adds virtual drives). There are good image editing and web editing tools for Ubuntu. 3. Some people like every minute detail documented with the birth certificates, census, or other record sources. How we go about our documentation and what we include depends on how we are going to use our databases. My primary family history goal was to produce readable and hopefully somewhat interesting documents to share with other family, so I simplify my data entry to support the readability goal while supplying the reader with the opportunity to check out my sources should they wish to. I printed out a series of family history books a few years back. Even with limiting how specific I was with sourcing, I had many many pages that were 1/2 of the page in footnotes. It is really important to experiment how you want your presentations to look on paper or online for that matter. We have all seen databases on line that may have had good information, but one could not follow the way the information was presented. The beauty with RM is that we can be as picky or as general in what we include. Do think about your final goal for your data presentation as you decide how to enter data and how redundant you want to be. -----Original Message----- From: Robert and Torie Salas via Subject: [RMagic] Common Source Details I have an ancestor who fathered 10 children with the same wife over 12 years, and I have now obtained the 10 birth certificates. Each states that he was a butcher and lived at the same place. Do people add 10 Occupation facts, each with a different source and 10 Residence facts, each with a different source to the one ancestor? I understand that philosophically / methodologically this is what should be done but doesn't such activity create a lot of clutter?
