This is so odd. I don't know really what you are discussing..... You say Germany didn't exist until 1871. Well my grgrandfather was born Aug 1844 in Baden, Hessen Nassau, Germany, so where does this leave him!!! Hessen-Nassau was one of Prussian provinces. Baden is NOT in Hessen-Nassau at all. It is a separate duchy until 1918. Baden-Baden is the city in Grand Duchy of Baden.
