Hi, I am looking for info for Amanda J. Bull, born Dec.15, 1815 in Fallsburg, Sullivan Co., NY. She died July 15, 1902 in Kansas, buried at Sego Cemetery, Reno Co., KS. I have tried for years to find out who her family is and have checked everything I can think of and with no luck. She married Obediah Brown Abt.1830 in Fallsburg, New York and later moved to Kansas where she died. Obediah died Oct.9, 1878 in Ashford, Windham Co., Conn. At least this is what I have found so not sure if it is accurate. It is believed he is buried near Keokuk, Iowa, but again not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated finding Amanda's people. Thanks Pat Robinson Boyer in AZ
Pat I don't have any particular information, but no wonder you are questioning Obediah. The "odds" of someone dying in CT in 1878 and being buried in IA are very bad. I don't know if you have access to the censuses, but there is an Obediah Brown, 63, born NY, with wife Amanda, 55, born NY, in Montrose, Lee County, Iowa, in 1870. Obediah has a reasonable "purse" (1600 in property, 2000 personal estate). Montrose is about halfway between Keokuk and Ft Madison. Regardless of all that, back to Amanda. The 1850 census has Obediah, 45, Amanda, 32, with their children in Fallsburg, NY. Children are John, 18 Mary, 15 Charity, 14 Emery, 10 Salinda, 5 Oliva, 1 In 1840, we have Obediah with One male 5-9 (John) One male 30-39 (Obediah) Two females under five (Mary and Charity) One female 20-29 (Amanda) There are no "Bulls" in Fallsburg in 1840, but there is a Spencer Bull in Mammakating, about 20 miles away. Spencer has two males 30-39, one female under 5 and two females 20-29 in the family. I do not find them in the 1830 census, probably because they were with their parents, whoever they were. We do find Spencer and family in Mamakating in 1850, born in CT. There is also a James Ball (indexed) in Thompson, probably now Thompsonville, about five miles away. Actually, a closer look tells me this is James Bull, not Ball. There is a James Bull in Thompson, in 1830. In 1830 the household is: One male over 100 One male 50-59 (b bet 1770-1780) One female 5-9 One female 10-14 One female 40-49 In 1840 the household is: one male 60-69 one female 15-19 one female 50-59 The missing girl in 1840 COULD be Amanda. The next thing to do would be to look at the surrounding counties in 1830 and 1840 for similarly aged girls, as there does not appear to be any more Bulls in Sullivan County. Something to note here. I just ran this name on Family Search and came up with an "obvious" alternate: Buhl. And, of course, Buel. In 1820, there is a Joseph D Bell in Thompson as well. I don't find any B*ll in Thompson, but that doesn't mean he's not there. The 1830 male over 100 is of interest here -- was he in the war? Who was he? What is the source of the information on the marriage? There may be more clues there. Absent that, I'd be going to the probates in Sullivan county for some clues there. Hope this helps.
