hello list, this query pertains to sources and citations. I use PAF as my genealogical software. If I import my GEDCOM into FTM and generate a register report, if I've entered information under "Notes," this data appears on the report. But data from this section does not appear if I import my GEDCOM into Ancestry for that particular person. Therefore, I'm now entering data as a source for an "event" in PAF and this appears in the register report as well as on Ancestry. This is straightforward for births, deaths and marriages. But what if my ancestor is mentioned in a book as a witness to a will? What kind of "event" is that? I am using "residence" but I guess it's possible that a person witnessed a document even though s/he was not a resident of where the document was executed. If my ancestor was listed as appearing on a grand jury, I think "residence" in most all cases would be the appropriate event for that citation. Entering this type of data under "Notes" in PAF was nice because it all prints out right under the person's name in the register report, and it doesn't really matter what kind of event it was. Using headings like "LAND," "DEATH," "RESIDENCE" or "MISCELLANEOUS" and then listing the data underneath covered it all. But entering the data as individual sources is nice too, since it appears on my Ancestry tree. So I guess my questions are: how would you handle entering the data and what kind of event would you use for data such as jury lists and witnesseing or appearing as principal or secondary parties in deeds, etc. Thanks, Barton
Barton: My limited knowledge about this situation says that data in some fields will transfer seamlessly via GEDCOM and some will get put into odd spots or lost altogether depending on what you're going from and to. I'm thinking that perhaps both PAF and FTM recognize the Notes tag in the GEDCOM (which is probably "NOTE") but Ancestry doesn't. I don't know the solution to your problem, but I suspect that only suggestions from people who are following the same export/import process as you will work in your case. Personally, I don't use Notes or Events. Everything gets turned into a source citation with detail added. I post from Legacy to RootsWeb WorldConnect and dislike the way WorldConnect places all Events toward the top of the person's listing above the family information. It took a lot of tinkering with test trees to get an arrangement at RootsWeb that I liked and you may have to do something along the same line. Or you may decide that the format you've already established in PAF/FTM is more important to you than the way it appears at Ancestry.
